I think Obama is just playing it safe during the election by staying in the middle. Once elected, he will probably switch back to the left a little. This means he will probably be a little more cautious with wars and seek U.N. council. I think with Russia, the U.N. will handcuff Obama, which is good news considering this whole thing has been a scheme to influence our elections. Georgia bombed first and the world knows it.

Yes, the EU also has to revitalize its relationship with Russia. But, the backsliding of Russia under Putin should be reversed and Russia should be more toward Europe. The 1997 partnership agreement should be renewed and updated. Also, Russia will have to take as well as give in any relationship - but it could serve to widen the Atlantic.

If Russia could play it smart, instead of trying to "control the near-abroad" and grow a closer relationship with the European Union - this could serve to divide the Atlantic and isolate the US.
Russia instead appears to think that the EU and US are "the same" when they are not. Russia needs to work with the EU and emphasize that the US is on the side of Georgia.
If Russia was smart and cooperated with the EU - this could serve to shut out the US.
