Spamming AB to fish for procs is not an issue even in T9/badge gear. Mana is a joke these days for arcane unless you're a fresh 80 in quest greens. My gear is not particularly leet and I can't remember the last time I ran oom, whether it was heroics or progression fights.
Also I'm sorry in today's environment there is no reason whatsoever to be dropping IA. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Disc priest these days, even in random heroics. You drop that and you're giving away free dps.
Then you obviously aren't the audience are you? There's a lot of mages out there who think you ALWAYS spam AB until you get a proc, then they demand innervates and their raidleaders complain.
Spell pushback is also giving away "free dps".
It's all about actually understanding the fights and the environment. Sometimes IA is better, sometimes spell pushback is better, sometimes range is better, or MA, etc.
(and I have no clue why people keep thinking heroics are relevant for anything.)
And also do you have Presence of Mind in your roto at all? I paired it up with Arcane Blast and I use it for the 5 Blast on in the first roto just for maybe a quick dps boost at the beginning. Do you recommend this at all?
Shard is absolutely a waste of badges. If you must go with a badge trinket Talisman of Resurgence is superior, as the passive int scales very nicely for us. Current math says NIC is a DPS loss as compared the Talisman + Abyssal Rune combo too. Take it if you're using a green trinket or sommat but it's mediocre at best.
Honestly? Abyssal Rune from reg ToC5 is still completely OP for arcane. Unless you get lucky in ICC that's probably the best thing you can get, and it's very easily farmed.

I don't know what "hc" is, but my current spec is a very generic arcane spec that has 3/5 stability for raiding (arguable whether or not it's needed, but I can't drop the hit from my gear so I might as well take it.)
If your guild has either Twins or Blood-Queen Lana'fel as progression bosses you are working on, Incanter's Absorption is worth getting.
No idea, I have a mage as a main so the last time I leveld was Wrath launch to go from 70-80 :p.
But if you google something like "frost mage leveling arcane" you can probably find the guides that suggest switching to arcane and see what they have to say.
@TFlo1020 Frost is the best leveling spec 10-64, at that point you get AB, and then you respec to arcane, and then this guide becomes at least somewhat useful to you. Here's a good indepth guide for you:

I know your comment was 7 months ago, so this is more for other people wondering the same thing. When leveling frost is imo the best way to go. I leveled a mage to 55 on my old server trying both fire and arcane, when I switched servers I rolled a frost mage instead and it was probably the best decision I made.
Definitely -- for the advanced players it's all about knowing when you can push it and when to hold back.
But so many arcane mages don't even know the basics that I figured the world needed something simple and clear, and then they'll have the tools and understanding to push it further.
Arcane PvE has just about the easiest rotation of all classes/specs. If you think you need to make a tutorial to explain how to push 2 buttons then it seems the noObs are more rampant than I thought in WoW. Imagine them playing feral druid or shadow priest. Sorry if I was rude but I'm so tired of schooling noObs. Heck I've seen a couple 5k+ GS mages without TTW or IV I mean WTF is that. I'm a grumpy old veteran don't mind me =P
That bitch is wrong spamming AB is still the best way to go in Heroics and it's hardly a "slight" DPS increase... When I hit 80 using this rotation I was stuck at 3.5k DPS whereas straight AB spam would climb up to 5k. Arcane is all about mana management so you can push AB stacks.

Hey all I just needed some edvice I'm deciding on making a Mage or a warlock but don't know which to pick. I would like one that has a high dps range around 5-6k dps in solo and is also fun
It's not separate, it's just that I have health and mana be completely transparent if they're full, and then show color as I use them. The opposite of normal mana/health bars basically.
So you don't see a health bar because I haven't lost health.
hi im lvling a mage now. im a rogue and saw how nasty arcane dps was and i wanted in on the action. i know this was all about raiding but im lvling frost and i wanted to know if arcane can pull of as a lvling spec? using slow as a snare and working off Mbarr procs, because frost is efficient but boring and the DPS and overall damage output should be better as arcane... and not to mention the new dungeon finder which will allow me to lvl dungeons as arcane if needed.. any tips / comments?
i think arcane barrage still has a place, if you do arcane blast x4 and missile barrage hasnt procced, then using another arcane blast costs too much mana, so drop the arcane blast buff with arcane barrage
actually i will keep it just for moving and maybe quicly getting somone out of web or something, but you were dead right when you said wil lower your dps by 10%, i tested my dps without AB without cooldowns, i managed 4k dps, with arcane baragge i managed 3.6k dps. which is 10% decrease, so thanks, now i will seriously rip it up lol

@mdogboy0 you bust not have good gear if it costs so much mana that you cant do another one. the thing about arcane barrage that makes it even worse is its low spell power coefficient(it goins a lot less then most spells from your spell power). it also gives a global cooldown and youll need to wait to cast another spell. and still the dps counts arcane barrgae as if it has a base cast time of 2.7 seconds so it altogether cane lower your dps by 10% in one cast
I dont know if her recount is old or what but your dps iIs always going to look better than your damage done. What I mean is you may pull 7k+ dps but a shadow priest pulling 1k less dps will have more overall damage done. Your dps is based off of casting time not time in battle with said mob. so you can cast ab and then stop casting yout dps will not move, If you cast ab then wait 5 seconds then cast again your dps will go up based on time spent casting not time waiting to cast.
not from a 'better dps' point of view, do you prefer playing arcane or fire? personally i think fire is far more fun, and its been neglected with all the changes to arcane.
Fire, not because it's harder (I actually think it's easier for most people), but because it feels more interactive and reactive.
Arcane plays more like a healer, making small changes to your mana consumption with a multiple-minute timeline in your head. It has fewer buttons so seems deceptively simple, but it's more involved than any spec I've ever played (which includes original affliction lock.)
But its difficulty isn't engaging or fun to me. So. Fire!

Why shouldn't you use Arcane Barrage in the rotation?
I mean, you should use missiles to use your blast buff, but after missiles, why can't you throw an arcane barrage? costs 1 second and you do 3000+ damage

I'm eager to know how you came up with your claim "10% of time you will need 13 AB casts to proc AM at least once during a boss fight". Probability of having AM proc after 13 AB casts is approximately 99.7%, your claim sounds absurd.
What she means is you will have to cast at least 13 ABs. This includes the probability of AM proccing on the 13th AB, the probability of every number greater than 13, and also probably 12 due to the fact that you will have started casting a 13th AB before you see the MB proc from your 12th.
The number she referred to was actually 8.6%, not 10, so she rounded up, probably in an attempt to share what she knows by experience. You should have done your math before making yourself look "absurd".
There is also some pretty rough rounding in the AM proc chance after 4 AB's (87.04% actually) , but I understood she wanted to make it simple and I removed my comment fast after posting it.
patch 3.2 was "arcane new hotness". Arcane isn't being buffed or nerfed in 3.3. The only "buff" we're getting is the 3% more damage or whatever (to tired to figure out the name... but it's the only "buff" in 3.3)... it honestly isn't even a buff... you'll always have someone who can supply that in a raid group... who isn't you ofc.
It is better to AB "fish" for procs then to do an unhasted missles.
The highest DPS is subjective and not a real rotation. ABx4 --> MB, and fish for MB unless you are blowing too much mana, in which case you clear your debuffs with barrage.
Casting unhasted missles at any point is a DPS loss vs the alternatives.
And arcane mages who think that spamming AB constantly and going OOM are doing far lower DPS than they could.
I'd suggest you go to stratfu and read Tashur's article about MBarr proc rates -- do you know on an average boss fight you have a 10% chance of going *13* AB's before a single MBarr proc? That's your mana right there.
You are correct that just spamming AB is a waste. However, if your mana can spare it, fishing for MB procs with AB will always be better then casting an unhasted missles. That is why, after ~5-7, it is best to clear your stacks with barrage and start again.
While a 4 stack barrage is slightly lower DPM then barrage to clear a stack, the DPS is significantly more. Tbh, when you are running over 32k mana in raid, you can take a bit less DPM for more DPS.
@Illuv011 Yes that's in the guide -- just surrounded by cautionary advice to not just spam AB and then wonder why you're OOM.
In fact the specific example involves what ends up being a 6-stack of AB for a reason :).
I don't know what you're meaning by multiple uses of "barrage" there, but if you mean using ABarr, don't. Just because you have 32K mana doesn't mean you won't get better performance by picking your spells wisely.
As an aside, just wanted to add that in full ToC 25 gear, Talisman of Resurgence is without a doubt BiS. The spellpower use stacks much stronger with your cooldowns that Scale of Fate's haste use, mostly because you should be pushing 800-900 haste easy.
Abarr is only useful in two situations. Movement, and stack clearing. It yields a DPS increase over unhasted missles, at the expense of DPM (IE, mana efficiency). If you govern your cooldowns correctly, it should be easily manageable and return an overall damage boost.
I was just questioning the idea of unhasted missles. It is honestly the worst option in any situation.
Forgive my sleep deprived state. Talisman of Resurgence is without a doubt best in slot "Behind double reign of the unliving, IE the OP trinket combo."

Arcane is the only spec that actually involves long-term planning in the game. While it doesn't have a lot of buttons, ret/enh have more buttons but are far more trivial to play.
BTW: I've played lots of specs once and found them "SOOO boring" because I didn't understand how to play them well.
The "raiding mage" approach you tried to advertise, as oposed to the "I am an arcane mage!" approach most raiding gnome mages (with mohawks) have that I sadly had to stumbled upon.

If you play it like you are claiming, you will do far worse dps than if you play it properly.
The "two button spec" is a common wow-forums misconception where people define complexity solely in terms of number of spells.
I find my fury warrior, who has more buttons, far more trivial to play than my arcane mage.

That "bitch" isn't talking about heroics, not sure what was unclear about that when all the background shots are 25-man raids.
If you want a guide to doing heroic DPS, my channel is never going to have it.
5-mans have no mana management, just "evoc when you can."
But, yes, the DPS boost on a real fight for AB spamming is only a few hundred higher.
Granted in your 5-mans it seems higher, since the fights are so short and you spend so much time ramping up the stack.

It's not separate, it's just that I have health and mana be completely transparent if they're full, and then show color as I use them. The opposite of normal mana/health bars basically.
So you don't see a health bar because I haven't lost health.

Just keep poking at power aura -- it's what I use for that.
The AB is only for 3+ stacks so I know to use AM.

hi im lvling a mage now. im a rogue and saw how nasty arcane dps was and i wanted in on the action. i know this was all about raiding but im lvling frost and i wanted to know if arcane can pull of as a lvling spec? using slow as a snare and working off Mbarr procs, because frost is efficient but boring and the DPS and overall damage output should be better as arcane... and not to mention the new dungeon finder which will allow me to lvl dungeons as arcane if needed.. any tips / comments?

i think arcane barrage still has a place, if you do arcane blast x4 and missile barrage hasnt procced, then using another arcane blast costs too much mana, so drop the arcane blast buff with arcane barrage

While what you think is a very popular opinion, it's not supported at all by math, spreadsheets, or simulations.
The only time to cast ABarr is while moving.

actually i will keep it just for moving and maybe quicly getting somone out of web or something, but you were dead right when you said wil lower your dps by 10%, i tested my dps without AB without cooldowns, i managed 4k dps, with arcane baragge i managed 3.6k dps. which is 10% decrease, so thanks, now i will seriously rip it up lol

i have asked this to a few people and no Answers. and you seem to know your Stuff. Is it Wise to be using The talent " Torment of the Weak" And "Slow" ? ISent it something like 12% more Damage? is dose it run your rotation

There is no point to specing into and using slow, you lose so much DPS it's not worth it.
Your tanks should be putting up the melee slows, that triggers torment of the weak (Thunderclap, Judgements of the Just, Icy Touch, Infected Wounds).
Unfortunately it's a terribly designed talent and means mages are at -12% on all pug content and even some organized raids, but what can you do....

@mdogboy0 you bust not have good gear if it costs so much mana that you cant do another one. the thing about arcane barrage that makes it even worse is its low spell power coefficient(it goins a lot less then most spells from your spell power). it also gives a global cooldown and youll need to wait to cast another spell. and still the dps counts arcane barrgae as if it has a base cast time of 2.7 seconds so it altogether cane lower your dps by 10% in one cast

I dont know if her recount is old or what but your dps iIs always going to look better than your damage done. What I mean is you may pull 7k+ dps but a shadow priest pulling 1k less dps will have more overall damage done. Your dps is based off of casting time not time in battle with said mob. so you can cast ab and then stop casting yout dps will not move, If you cast ab then wait 5 seconds then cast again your dps will go up based on time spent casting not time waiting to cast.

not from a 'better dps' point of view, do you prefer playing arcane or fire? personally i think fire is far more fun, and its been neglected with all the changes to arcane.

Fire, not because it's harder (I actually think it's easier for most people), but because it feels more interactive and reactive.
Arcane plays more like a healer, making small changes to your mana consumption with a multiple-minute timeline in your head. It has fewer buttons so seems deceptively simple, but it's more involved than any spec I've ever played (which includes original affliction lock.)
But its difficulty isn't engaging or fun to me. So. Fire!

Kythy , Im looking for that addon for the proc, but I cant find right one.I need addon for only arcane barrage proc, nothing esle.I find you cooldown addon not usefull , and i think there should be adition bar showing mana % ofcourse you will need to know when you are less than 40% so you use evocation.
Besides I didn't understand that %3 bonus to raid - it will work only if theyr arent any retripaladins and bm hunster with theyr own special raid buff?

Why shouldn't you use Arcane Barrage in the rotation?
I mean, you should use missiles to use your blast buff, but after missiles, why can't you throw an arcane barrage? costs 1 second and you do 3000+ damage

Arcane barrage is 1.5 seconds, not 1 second.
I would suggest you go to EJ and read the mage threads there. I'm not going to go into math and simulation data on youtube comments, heh.

If you never cast missiles unless you get the proc you're either:
(a) using too much mana, because you're chaining too many AB's together, or
(b) lowering your DPS by using ABarr
AM without a proc is fine -- it's worse than with a proc, but our mana pools can't support blind fishing for a proc.

Just stumpled over this vid, and it left me unanswered with one question, you say that one should not fish for the AM proc, also you say that you should never use ABar unless you're in a movement fight.
What do you do to dump the AB stacks when AM isnt proccing? Atm i use an ABar even in non-movement fights, cause start casting a non-procced AM seems pretty stupid to me

Also, if you're a new mage to 80, you'll want to have barrage and do
ABx4 -> Missiles if proc is up, if it isn't up, barrage --- repeat.
Using arcane Missiles to dump your 4 stacks is total retardation if your proc isn't up.

I'm eager to know how you came up with your claim "10% of time you will need 13 AB casts to proc AM at least once during a boss fight". Probability of having AM proc after 13 AB casts is approximately 99.7%, your claim sounds absurd.

What she means is you will have to cast at least 13 ABs. This includes the probability of AM proccing on the 13th AB, the probability of every number greater than 13, and also probably 12 due to the fact that you will have started casting a 13th AB before you see the MB proc from your 12th.
The number she referred to was actually 8.6%, not 10, so she rounded up, probably in an attempt to share what she knows by experience. You should have done your math before making yourself look "absurd".

patch 3.2 was "arcane new hotness". Arcane isn't being buffed or nerfed in 3.3. The only "buff" we're getting is the 3% more damage or whatever (to tired to figure out the name... but it's the only "buff" in 3.3)... it honestly isn't even a buff... you'll always have someone who can supply that in a raid group... who isn't you ofc.

I slightly disagree with you in one aspect.
It is better to AB "fish" for procs then to do an unhasted missles.
The highest DPS is subjective and not a real rotation. ABx4 --> MB, and fish for MB unless you are blowing too much mana, in which case you clear your debuffs with barrage.
Casting unhasted missles at any point is a DPS loss vs the alternatives.

I'd suggest you go to stratfu and read Tashur's article about MBarr proc rates -- do you know on an average boss fight you have a 10% chance of going *13* AB's before a single MBarr proc? That's your mana right there.

You are correct that just spamming AB is a waste. However, if your mana can spare it, fishing for MB procs with AB will always be better then casting an unhasted missles. That is why, after ~5-7, it is best to clear your stacks with barrage and start again.
While a 4 stack barrage is slightly lower DPM then barrage to clear a stack, the DPS is significantly more. Tbh, when you are running over 32k mana in raid, you can take a bit less DPM for more DPS.

@Illuv011 Yes that's in the guide -- just surrounded by cautionary advice to not just spam AB and then wonder why you're OOM.
In fact the specific example involves what ends up being a 6-stack of AB for a reason :).
I don't know what you're meaning by multiple uses of "barrage" there, but if you mean using ABarr, don't. Just because you have 32K mana doesn't mean you won't get better performance by picking your spells wisely.

As an aside, just wanted to add that in full ToC 25 gear, Talisman of Resurgence is without a doubt BiS. The spellpower use stacks much stronger with your cooldowns that Scale of Fate's haste use, mostly because you should be pushing 800-900 haste easy.

Ahh, posted too slowly.
Abarr is only useful in two situations. Movement, and stack clearing. It yields a DPS increase over unhasted missles, at the expense of DPM (IE, mana efficiency). If you govern your cooldowns correctly, it should be easily manageable and return an overall damage boost.
I was just questioning the idea of unhasted missles. It is honestly the worst option in any situation.

ABarr is your worst possible choice unless you're moving.
That said, there's no point in further arguing, because you can't really post lengthy math here and I doubt I'm going to convince you just by saying "no really!"

Eng+Tailor is more DPS than anything other than eng+JC, and eng+JC is only 2 DPS more. Not worth it to reroll an entire profession.

Then you have no idea how to play arcane, and you don't understand any complexity beyond how many buttons you hit.
Arcane is the only spec that actually involves long-term planning in the game. While it doesn't have a lot of buttons, ret/enh have more buttons but are far more trivial to play.
BTW: I've played lots of specs once and found them "SOOO boring" because I didn't understand how to play them well.

What I enjoed the most:
The "raiding mage" approach you tried to advertise, as oposed to the "I am an arcane mage!" approach most raiding gnome mages (with mohawks) have that I sadly had to stumbled upon.
