  • Had the good fortune to meet this chick when I was 23 and she was about 80. She was immensly kind to me. I'll never forget her.

    Love or hate, send it...

  • I like Ian McCulloch's version.

  • sigh

  • My ex and I considered this "our song," mainly because we were a May-December romance (he was significantly older than I). We'd be driving somewhere and one would start singing it, and we'd just sing it together, holding hands, enjoying being together. Eventually we parted amicably, but this song (and especially this version) brings back many fond memories. I'll always remember you, Jim; what I am today I owe to you.

  • @Vagrarian --that is a very touching story. I hope Jim is around to see your comment.

  • Nobody does it better.....

  • @andriamanantena except for jimmy durante

  • She was his Muse so no one else is better qualified to do this beautiful song justice.

  • One of my all time favorite songs !

  • thanks, inspired many, like pj harvey too!

  • I wish I were born in the time when Knickerbocker Holiday and Woman In the Dark were on the Broadway stage. Weill was a master ar his craft and September Song proves evident.

  • The greatest American song. And composed by a German. How American :-)

  • Beautiful....Thanks for posting...

  • Just brilliant!

  • Lotte Lenya and Kurt Weill were married twice, actually: in 1926, and in 1937. Their 2nd wedding was in September, and they stayed together till Weill's death in 1950.

  • adoro...

  • Lovely , has a french feel

  • This just gets to me everytime i hear her sing it. Its so beautiful and frankly, perfect...

  • I love everything about it. The song, the singer and the interpretation. The words are poetry. Very moving. Thanks for posting.

  • Wonderful. A great talent of hearing: she sings just off pitch, sliding up and trailing off with the colorful and emotional imperfection that is musically perfect for this style. A powerful musician with a natural expression..... Thank you.

  • My days dwindle down to a precious few. Thanks for the memories.

  • This was written for Lenya by her husband and she sings it with an incomparable interpretation. It breaks my heart to hear it, and every time I sing it myself.

  • @MarthaKite Actually, this was written for Walter Huston.

  • @Phil42x

    I stand corrected...thanks, Phil!

I believe Lenya did sing it... She was his muse. :)

  • thanks for posting this

  • It Never Was You was composed to be the romantic music of Knickerbocker Holiday, from Weill and Max Anderson. But September Song won the public preference. Love this song. But when i hear:

    "but it never was you,

    it never was anyway you..."

Dont know... I really dont know whats my favourite.

  • Yes AOTAB..she did play Rosa Kleb

  • that's the way to start another september!

    happy september!

    such sad time

  • "And the days dwindle down to a precious few..."

  • I'm clearly behind the bell curve on this songstress but is this delicate flower also ROSA KLEBB of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE fame?

  • harveyardman,

Yes, if you listen to Walter Huston do this song, you will throw stones at almost anyone else who sings it. He was not a singer but he really captured the whole meaning of the song better than anyone else I have ever heard.

  • Lenya and Weill knew each other, and worked together often (Drei Groeschen Oper. and others), so if any one knew what Weill wanted in an interpretation of a song, it was certainly Lenya.

  • @78timothy "knew each other" hm. I guess those who are married do qualify as knowing each other, and then some.

  • I have heard hundreds of versions of this song....Lotte gives it her particular style....Very very good....I love it !!!!!

  • beautiful song, my father in law which is widowed was listening and felt very emotional

  • Sittin' here sobbin'...I'm NOT in my September years yet, but at 52, I figure that I'm in late July/1st of August...

  • One of the saddest, most beautiful songs ever written.

Yikes....I think I'm in my September years...

  • Priceless. Now THAT was a woman!

  • This doesn't sound much like Lotte

  • No one could sing this gorgeous Weil any better--not even Walter Huston.

  • Chills down my spine...has anyone ever captured this emotion so truly, so poignantly?

  • Lotte, Kurt and Maxwell - beautiful!

  • Lotte and Kurt were married at one time. The best piece that Kurt Weill ever wrote was 'My Ship', my favorite song of all time, lyrics by Ira Gershwin.

  • Mmm. Lovely. Thankyou for posting.

  • and a teary eyed good-bye to Red Fox too...

  • Gracias Tati! Me ha encantado
