My ex and I considered this "our song," mainly because we were a May-December romance (he was significantly older than I). We'd be driving somewhere and one would start singing it, and we'd just sing it together, holding hands, enjoying being together. Eventually we parted amicably, but this song (and especially this version) brings back many fond memories. I'll always remember you, Jim; what I am today I owe to you.
I wish I were born in the time when Knickerbocker Holiday and Woman In the Dark were on the Broadway stage. Weill was a master ar his craft and September Song proves evident.
Lotte Lenya and Kurt Weill were married twice, actually: in 1926, and in 1937. Their 2nd wedding was in September, and they stayed together till Weill's death in 1950.
Wonderful. A great talent of hearing: she sings just off pitch, sliding up and trailing off with the colorful and emotional imperfection that is musically perfect for this style. A powerful musician with a natural expression..... Thank you.
This was written for Lenya by her husband and she sings it with an incomparable interpretation. It breaks my heart to hear it, and every time I sing it myself.
It Never Was You was composed to be the romantic music of Knickerbocker Holiday, from Weill and Max Anderson. But September Song won the public preference. Love this song. But when i hear:
"but it never was you,
it never was anyway you..."
Dont know... I really dont know whats my favourite.
Yes, if you listen to Walter Huston do this song, you will throw stones at almost anyone else who sings it. He was not a singer but he really captured the whole meaning of the song better than anyone else I have ever heard.
Lenya and Weill knew each other, and worked together often (Drei Groeschen Oper. and others), so if any one knew what Weill wanted in an interpretation of a song, it was certainly Lenya.
Lotte and Kurt were married at one time. The best piece that Kurt Weill ever wrote was 'My Ship', my favorite song of all time, lyrics by Ira Gershwin.
Had the good fortune to meet this chick when I was 23 and she was about 80. She was immensly kind to me. I'll never forget her.
Love or hate, send it...
