When I see the 1983 release tag to this song I feel my heart slip away as I didn't discover Lord Waits until 2001. I would kiss his feet just for him to shake my hand
To be honest, I havent used to the way he sings but I love this song. It shows an art of American culture with Asian flavour or an art of Asian culture with American flavour.
@gengiskahn There are differences. A feel or rythm or even meaning of music is sometimes be vital heritage or part of identity to a tribe, nation or even race. I didn´t pass any judgementson one being better than the other. Some nuances simply so unique and genuine that they are rarely touched by an outsider. And call me a racist snob if you need to but I can´t think of many other guys like Waits who can do that. But I guess I wrote it a bit crudely, sorry.
@SquishypuffDave At times, absolutely. Other times he sounds like he can even work with 'vibes' of lifeforms not from this planet at all. But hey....who knows the Captain, knows that the Captain is....'out there'.
@McBrannon1000, Ah, I should have clarified. "The only white guy who can make Black music." Define how Tom Waits makes music have its own skin color. Because it seems to me every genre has people of MANY colors doing it. But that's just me.
@McBrannon1000 Nevermind, I should have known, diversity is politically incorrect these days. And when pointing out that someone crosses over, you´re called a racist by some goons that got stuck in the ideology that all is uniform and there is no color. So, enoy your ´correctness´, i´ll save this for someone who knows the diference between musicology and politics.
Brilliant. Superb. Bizarre. Beats even Nick Cave into a cocked hat. The antithesis - nay, the nemesis - of the pop song. It makes me want to roll in the damp cloddy gutter with a rusty Zippo trying to light a soggy cigarette while reciting Edgar Allen Poe and J D Salinger. Don't you know that god is tom waits bear?
@SindySexSlave69 waits' bear.....(sorry....so well written, but we NEED the apostrophe, you see, to clarify meaning, meaning at a glance, because, sweet Sindy, we have only a glance, don't we, you and I, at this trivial crap, and we've got to be able to get it right the first time, no surprises, etc., no . . . ?)

One of the most awesome Tom Waits songs ever IMO, and one that you don't hear as much as a lot of others. Thank you for the upload.

@Hieronymus76 Tom Waits would be so glad to hear that you approve of his skin color. Unfortunately, everyone else thinks you're a racist snob.
