For many years, Walter Brennan held the record for the most Academy Awards won by an actor (he won three as Best Supporting Actor). His record stood until Kate Hepburn took home her fourth award.
thecolaratlady: Walter was in Red River, How the West was won, My Darling Clementine, Kentucky, and so many more. He reminded my brother Tom and I so much of our Grandfather, just about the same age.
The sensitivity of Walter telling the tale of Old Rivers made it a one person performance, nobody could ever mistake who was behind the microphone....His uniqueness made him a legend in the genre he chose to specialise in...and he only ever played the one character, just with a different name....Even Amos McCoy had the same limp and the same laugh, and why not....
I met Walter Brennan a long time ago in old Tucson . he was in a suit and tie. they were getting ready to make another movie. John Wayne had a ranch in az 15 miles from my home . it was called Red River Project. He would stop off and have lots of cold ones at table top tavern in the town of Stanfield Az.
Remember hearing this on the radio when I was a little shaver. It is a four star tune done by a master story teller. Walter Brennan a three time Academy Award winner too....much thanks for this posting this song......
Love this song by Walter Brennan. The ending brings tears to my eyes and if I sing along with it I tear my voice a bit. "One of the days, I'm gonna climb that mountain, walk up there among them clouds, that mule, old rivers and me". You can almost hear the tear in his voice as well.
@gloheart1 I have this song on a 45 single and what a beautiful track it is too. A Walter Brennan classic. Got a chip in it right at the start but still plays well though after all these years. Yes I know what you mean about a tear in your eye, it is that sort of song. Can't think what is on the other side though. Gary
@mollymitch1 I just turned 62 and I heard this song as you youngster. I bought the 45 record of it also and it's almost like new. I cry when I hear it too and it tugs at my heart. It's good to see that other are enjoying it and my sister and I are going to make CD's or DVD's of these songs for our kids and grandkids. We want to preserve these treasures.
To me, this is the most genuine soul music ever created. The tearjerker. I guess I got it from my Dad. He always used the words "cry in your beer" for music like this. Mr. Brennan could release this type of sonic attack on your feelings with the very best of them. What really tops this one off with me is the last few words. When his voice cracks, so does my world.
about a year ago I told a good neighbor of mine, that he was my hero. He blushed and said "what do you mean?" Well Jim, I said, you're 78 years old, and still working your 400 acre farm .. corn, tobacco, beans, and you have 30 head of cattle too, you take good care of your wife, your dogs and cat, and your house. Hell Jim, I'm 57 and starting to get tired early in the day .. how do you do it Jim? .... " church, love, and no desire to retire" lol, and I don't have your 19 yr old girlfriend :)
i love this song for a very long time i am 57 right now and when it came out i knew this was about my grandparents in southeast georgie where my grandaddy was a tobbacco and cotten farmer, i can remember him using the mules and the sleds to pick his crops, and he was the great ammerican farmer like others back then.....im so grateful to have grandparents as such......love u grandma, and grandaddy and i miss u dearly.......
I have always been a fan of Walter Brennan - never a star in his own right but what a back-up actor. Magnificent in Rio Bravo with John Wayne and Dean Martin - agreat movies with Dino the real star.
@LES6723 I Love All his Movies And Music and while don`t care for or listen to most modern Rap Or Hip Hop ,I am pointing out That Rap or The Spoken Word In Music Does Not Have to Be Shocking or Vulgar or twisted by blind Prejudice,
fatkinson1954, you're right. John Wayne's 'America, Why I Love Her' was similar, and he performed it powerfully I might add.
But, this thread is for his good friend and fellow performer extraordinaire, Walter Brennan, who was truly masterful at inserting all his enchanting personality into every word of every lyric of every song he performed for us.
John Wayne and Walter Brennan, two great Americans who continue to stand the test of time. At least I think so.
50 years later this is still a great song, always will be.......Even though I listen to "Hard Rock n' Roll" I still love this song......Just heard this song on the radio today after many years of nobody ever playing it on commercial radio....Thanks for the great post....."mpsicily"................

I had forgotten Walter Brennan had recorded "songs". I usually think of him as a great character actor and not a "singer".
Aray1949 1 month ago
Living proof that you don't have to be a good singer to make a song work for you.

Hard to believe that Walter was born in Boston and attended Boston Latin high school!
Being a Mass. native myself I was really surprised when I found out that Walter Brennan wasn't from out west or the south.
He fooled a lot of people. A great character actor. Perhaps the best ever.
