  • I love her voice, wish she sang in English.

  • What do you think is the meaning of this song? (I speak Greek.)

  • I see it: grapes, wine, this music, women, nice summer evening 3000 years back, peace in mind and in soul.. thanx Greeks

  • SUPER SCHÖN

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That woman will always be sexy.

  • Great !

  • Great, great, great!!!

  • lovely singing and music. TY.

  • Einai megalos o kaimos, è grande la tristezza.

Tante grazie al grande Maestro Mikis.

  • Incroyable!!

  • hallo, i want to know some Greek, 'cause i am very intrested in your culture.

    Lb. Grüße aus Mannheim.

  • O Kaimos.

    L'amour brillait dans tes yeux.

    L'amour brillait dans ton sourire.

Il n'y avait plus rien à dire.

Avant de se parler, on était heureux.

    Amitiés de Belgique.

  • Excellent song...very fine singer!!!

  • Listen to both Arja Saijonmaa and Sven Bertil Taube's versions of this wonderful song.

  • anatrixiasa

  • Bithikotsis sings the best version

  • The two bouzouki musicians .... I see them so often in what I will call Mikis concerts, who are they..... I wonder every time I see and hear them.

  • The one on the right is Kostas Papadopoulos (bouzouki legend) and the other I believe is Polykandriotis...

  • Thank you xeirourgos, for adding the names here!

  • his name is karnesis great bousouki

  • In the year 1995 i saw Mikis Theodorakis and Maria Farantouri performing "Mauthausen Kantate" in the Mauthausen concentration camp (50th anniversery of liberation). Nothing ever since touched me more emotionally.

Mikis Theodorakis incorporates freedom, life and love.

  • I never had the pleasure to see the Mauthusen Kantate Live, but the CD is in my "Favorites" section. Together with the dutch version with the same songs, recorded by Liesbeth List.

Both make my hair stand up when I play them....

  • After hearing this I never want to hear the version by Vicky Leandros ever again - be it in french, german or greek.

  • If Vicky would have sung it when Mikis was there to conduct the orchestra, and as the one to watch when snging the lyrics, Vicky would have sung it different than we know from her.

But indeed, no one will ever sing it like Maria. Maria is an uncomparable musical phenomenon, created and built up by Mikis himself...... which developed in his presence, his unendless deep souled connection with her....

    ditt eget liv!

    (words by Swedish national poet

Bo Setterlind. Thanks to his text

    this became Mikis' biggest

    hit in Sweden.)

  • is great the shore..is great the wave...is great the sorrow...is great the sin..bitter river inside me the blood of your wound..and from the blood more bitter your kiss in my lips...do you dont know the frost..evening without moonlight.. to dont have the exact knowledge what time the Charon[death] will possess you..and from the blood even bitter in my lips your kiss.....

  • Thank you... Great song performed by great artists... But... it could end in a more positive note.......

  • Translation of a poem is not easy. But I feel your feelings and your desire to make the song known to others I give you an "excellent" for trying

  • thank you .evenso i am not a specialist in the matter ..its an effort to satisfy the demand of somes friends abroad....

  • This version is 1000 times better, a THOUSAND!

Sung with power emotion and soul.

Maria and Mikis are living legends.

    Long may they live.

  • Agree

  • The version of Tomislav ivcic i meri cetinic- Gorka rijeka is better. i think so you can listend to this

  • Damned Srbski nazi - go to Russia: there EVERYTHING is better than elsewhere... !

There you have to watch the composer and HIS preferred singer - if you even can imagine this.

And therefore you have to shut your nasty mouth and only listen............!

I am from Austria - and we are totally fed up from your peoples behaviour !!!

  • Dear friend,

why such bitternes against Serbs. You should know that Meri Cetinic and Tomislav Ivcic are Croats. So please apologize for your "srbski nazi". No Serb will never, not in a dream say that. Theodorakis and Marias song is normaly 1000 times better and with more soul.

  • @vizmatic Agreed, and people should revise their stupid nationalism, which is merely the imbecilic cloaking in some mythical nonsense. A million years ago we were all amoba, and in a million there will only be cockroaches around.... So much for "great nations"... A little realism, folks!

    ;-)

  • I forgot to mention something else. Vicky Leandros has recorded a german version called ICH HAB' DIE LIEBE GESEHEN. Also very very nice.

  • There's even a croatian version existing, it's called GOKA RIJEKA and is sung by Tomislav Ivcic- This version can also be found here on youtube...

  • A great greek song.Farantouri is fantastic in duett with the great Theodorakis.Simply wonderful!

  • A great song, a great musician, a great singer.

    Einai megalos o kaimos

    ki einai pikro to krima...

    Den ksereis ti einai pagonia

    vradia xoris feggari

    na mhn gnorizeis poia stigmi

    o ponos tha se parei....

    What a meaning...

The last great era of greek culture...

  • @tgiannist

Great Great Great as you say.

It seems to me that when Mikis sings the lyrics he says " o xaros tha se parei"

  • Potami mesa moy pikro to aima tis pligis soy ki apo to aima pio pikro sto stoma to fili soy

  • Yes, doga, she is indeed the holy voice of oympus and more. And we don't just name our children or grandchildren after them, we raise them to resist authority and act for the people.

Benito Moussolini was named after Benito Juarez! His father hoped. Or what.

I want people in Canada to raise Mikis and Maria children by any name. To be strong.

  • many greetings from thessaloniki to turkey and portugal...

  • hello from turkey. maria is the best. she is the holy voice of olympus.

  • Mythical!

    Greetings from Portugal!

  • can you tell me how to get the cd of romanceo gitano? (trans I think Yanno Rittis)

  • very nice song with wonderful voice

  • großartig, großartig....

  • I am way back in the 1960's again - so many memories. If it had been Moschouliou - I'd be in tears

  • oh wow ,it takes my soul to heaven to hear this beautiful poignant song ,one of my favourites

  • Farantouri's singing brings warmness to my heard. She is a wonderful woman with a wonderful voice.

  • Yes !! Excellent. The song that Maria sang when Mikis heard her for the first time all those years back. Thanks so much for putting it online.
