Actually you are wrong, a vocoder is used for auto tuning/pitch correction, although a vocoder can be used for many more things than making people who can't sing sound like they can song in a very nasal formant filtered synth patch.

@howlingwolfmusic If you watch a video of someone making a "ghetto" talk box, they just take a PVC cap, put it over a piece of the speaker (don't know the name), then drill a hole in the cap, put a tube leading from the top of the cap into the mouth, then hook the instrument up to the speaker, and play the music... So as far as I can tell, you play the notes, and the sound resonates in your mouth, so whatever shape you make with your mouth while playing will affect the sound.

@ArvinTV Sorry to disappoint, but thats part of the talkbox so it has to go in his mouth. An option he could do is to stick it on the mic like Peter Frampton does and that way he wouldn't have to hold it with his mouth, just stick it in.

The only thing I don't like about doing vocals this way is you can't get any percussive sounds like K's C's B's etc. And you can't get much dynamically out of it unless you are damn good with automation clips on the volume.
