..if you want to learn how to play post up basketball, there are two players you need to watch - one was Moses Malone, the other was Dantley - no one will ever top this guy with his back to the basket - textbook...
Adrian is definitely one of the unsung heroes of pro basketball. I know he is in the HOF and his number is retired in Utah. But today's casual fans (most) don't know who he is. he averaged 30 ppg 4 seasons straight and even did it with the most efficiency (low FG made but lots of FTs made)...
Shame there is not more footage of him. I would love to study his game more.
I remember he got traded for Aguirre, he could have had a championship that season. I only saw him at the end of his career. But my dad told me how good he was. Unique player.
This guy was a monster and a NBA rarity, 6'4 post scorer, to avarage 30 PPG on just 18 shots is crazy. Also led the league in scoring and PER, one of the best in the world in yearly 80's..
im only 20 years old, but i do what i can to patten my game off any players from the mid 60's to late 90's... i've pattented my attack/mid range game after dantley, so simple yet so effective. i have to thank this man lol
Dantley deserved to be on the Top 50 team ahead of Shaq who had only been in the league a few years at that time and Pippen who proved he was nothing without Jordan.
dantley was a master of 'below the rim' basketball - he showed you could be a premier scorer without having a 40 inch vertical - quick first step, drop step, following thru after contact - the guy was FREAKIN' incredible - still can't believe the pistons sent him packing after all he did for them - truly one of the all time greatest scorers in league history...
back in the eighties when A.D. was traded we all got the feeling, whether it was true or not, that a weasel was involved. I wonder, if it was true, who that weasel was? Hmmm......are the initials I.T. involved?
Unlikely. In Halberstram's book Playing for Keeps, the story is that it was Isiah Thomas who got him traded to Dallas for Mark Aguirre, I believe. The next time he saw thomas on the court as an opponent, he said (paraphrase) "I know it was you who got me", and then he did a hard pinch on his arm. No love lost there :^)
Can't believe the Lakers even had this guy at one point (just before they drafted Magic) before dealing him away. Interesting to see how that team would've worked out if he was still with them.
Dantley was so good, people didn't even notice - it's hilarious that Dumars would praise hiim so highly, when no one went to bat to keep him on the pistons in '89, since Isiah wanted his buddy Aguirre on the team - for all he did for them detroit dumped him like garbage, nice way to treat one of the classiest guys in the sport - Dantley, at 6'4, has a career .540 shooting average!! Playing on the low post, and scoring over guys 10 inches talller - he was AMAZING..
another thing so many people forget is Dantley actually had one leg shorter than the other! He had to wear a special sneaker on one foot so he would stand evenly while playing, and the guy was still a machine! Truly one of the most unique players of all time, one of my favs..
Word... It may be important to remember that Dumars was still a young guy back then and players were a lot less likely to talk shit about management.
I do agree however that keeping AD would have been a solid move. Isaiah probably held sway as the Piston's Star player and got Aguirre into Detroit.
Dumars doesn't seem like the type of guy to raise a fuss anyway. Damn... we're talking Rodman's rookie year. Yeah, it would have been WAY BETTER to keep AD come to think of it.

@juvserr I noticed! AD is one of my all time favorites. A life long forever GSW fan. I've watched Barry, Mully, Bernard King live many times, and countless X's on TV.
AD is as good or better than any one of them on any night. Strong with a sweet shot, quick to the hoop and above all fearless. He'd put the ball up in peoples faces taller, in a crowd, in the middle of the key. Baseline, low post , where ever the dude was money. He wore mother jumpers out. In half court O it had to go to AD

@juvserr I'm from the Oakland Bay area and I'll tell you he was an East Bay Favorite. Known for being a hard nosed player. We knew AD was the shit . please excuse the metaphor.
EASILY one of the NASTIEST, cold blooded killers to ever cast a shadow on a basketball court.
Remembering how GREAT he and others of his genre were at playing the game makes it EASY for me to understand why I can't stand watching the NBA now.
Just trying to let you know 2009-2010 NBA ain't READY for a league that has 25 guys with his mindset! Magic,Bird,Doc,Jordan and so many others were just bloodthirsty KILLERS on the court!
I hear ya, but times were different. People took it to the hole more. I guess a guy like that now would be D-Wade, but even he is starting to develope more of an outside game.

The 'Ghost Foul' screwed Dantley out of his championship with Detroit in '88. I fucking hate refs.

Odd they would lead off with AD in a Dallas jersey. Where he spent exactly 10 mins at the tail end of his career, when he wasn't inactive

He lives near me and we go to the same gym here in Silver Spring, Maryland...
