A few years ago, I spent a night on Munson Island, and there were Key Deer everywhere. It's almost shocking how the deer aren't afraid of humans in the slightest. We actually had to shove a few deer out of out camp to keep them out of our food supply.
I love going thru Big Pine. You cant go 100 feet without seeing some sort of flashing light going "DANGER DANGER! YOU ARE NOW ENTERING KEY DEER HABITAT" sure those little buggers are cool and everything but tourists shouldn't feed them. (in fact it is a 10000 dollar fine or something like that)
Due to uncontrolled hunting and habitat destruction, their numbers were estimated less than 50 animals in 1940's. With the establishment of National Key Deer Refuge in 1957 and intensive law enforcement efforts, the population has since increased and has now stabilized. Present population is 250 to 300 deer with two-thirds of this population located on Big Pine Key.
We stayed in a B&B in Deer Key once, and the owner was feeding one of those deer some fruit. I managed to make it pick from my hand as well. Not sure if that was a good idea, but it seemed ok at the time. Very cute. It really added to our holiday experience. I now drive slower at night (but not annoyingly extra too slow), to reduce the risk of hitting any wildlife.
I'm so happy with your calm response so you could get the "winn dixie" off his head. I take it you were in South Florida? The only place I've seen Key Deer is truly in the keys.... so tiny like small dogs and so cute. I can't believe how tame and cooperative this one was with ya! Hats off, great vid and good job.
I know its been forever since you posted this video but...I don't know why but this movie made me laugh. Just when you were like "its ok come here, ok now go away." Then... this is people food not deer food.
