The Cleveland co-captain Mike McCormack went on to a short stint as head coach of the Eagles from 1973-75, then the Colts in 1980-81 and the Seahawks in 1982. In between he was an assistant coach for various teams beginning with the Redskins in 1965. He later served as GM for the Carolina Panthers in their first years, before finally retiring from football in the late 90s. His career spanned 46 years in every capacity possible.
The Lions completed one of the great comebacks to get to the championship. They were losing 24-7 to the 49ers at halftime in the playoff game for the western conference crown. It was 27-7 early in the 3rd qtr. Then the Lions scored 24 unanswered points to take the conference title 31-27. Another crushing loss for Y A Tittle, the Jim Kelly of his era.
Growing up in the 70s, the voices of Chris Schenkel, Curt Gowdy, Jack Whitaker and Pat Summerall were part of the soundtrack of my youth. To me, they were THE voices of pro football.
It's amazing that virtually the whole field is dirt. How did the grass ever grow back in time for the baseball season? I also like the hay in the bech area to soak up the mud. What an inovation. It's good to see a football game where they actually get their uniforms dirty.
@italstallion06 iam tired of seeing these new breed hip hop clown athletes pound their chest after every fuckn play! jesus they do it after making a tackle on a kick off! thats not emotion its stupidity!
@italstallion06 And their fancy halftime shows. And their million sponsors. And their endless commercials on television. The NFL today is nothing more than a money racket full of pampered players thanks to an overly safe commission. The NFL in the 50's was far more raw and just plain tougher.
My Uncle would be turning 89 if he was still living and would still be complaning about the Lions. Born and raised in Michigan and went to Michigan State.... He died in 1980 and loved the Lions his whole life. Too bad he never got to see them very successful, except when he was young.
1957 is still the last Championship for the Lions more then 50 years later. People today tend to only remember the present & that the Lions have been awful the last 10 years but they've actually have had a very good history & were one of the best Franchises in Football their first 40 Seasons.
Tobin Rote is the only quarterback to win an NFL and AFL Championship. The 57' Championship with the Lions, as seen here. And in 63' with the Chargers. Ironically, it was the last time either team won a championship.

"seventh title appearance in eight seasons" Perhaps the Brownies used up all their Championship passes?

Briggs - aka Tiger Stadium was razed a couple of years ago but the playing field remains intact!

The players shunned the antics of today's players. They had class. Now it is like watching a Harlem Globetroters game.

At that time-except for LA and SF-the NFL was a narrowly geographic league.College was much bigger elsewhere.

Why wasn't the 1958 NFL title game (Giants-Colts) also filmed in color??

i actually prefer these old hard nosed NFL championship games compared to the glitzly super bowls played in domes or in warm weather

@italstallion06 ,
I totally agree, they are just too comercial.I especially hate the half-time shows.

@mrjim271 same here, i want to see football, not some mini-concert, i'd rather watch a full halftime analysis than sit through the shows
