  • I miss the 80's and its music, not the fashion though. This is a great tune.

  • Of course the former guitarist of Genesis would be schlepping his own gear in a beat-up van!

  • (laughing) I actually liked the ad at the beginning.

  • After the 80s music went way dowm, this crap that they are trying to pass as music is bullshit.

  • This song makes me miss the eighties too!!!! Love these guys!!!!

  • its an incredible song

  • Who plays the manager and who plays the father?

  • @CofCGuy Comedian Richard Belzer plays the father.

  • There's something so plaintive and real about this song. I think it's the best song about disappointment in the last 30 years. Thanks for posting!

  • muy buena musica de los 80s

    ( el video--bad )

  • I gotta say, I first heard this song at work, never heard of Mike and the Mechanics, until then, but liked their songs. But like all music videoes, I thought this was suppose to be a sort of LOVE song??? I never get how the video doesn't go with the music, but taht's just me being dumb as always. Like both the video and song still!!! Haha.

  • memories, memories!!

  • It was a great time, 80's, I like so much this song!!

  • Screw the 21st Century! That basically sums it up for me.

  • The Paul Young that did "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down"?.. That's not him.

  • This late Paul Young is the same one that sang in "Sad Cafe" and the song "Every time you go". He lived a shortened, but wonderful life. Most can't leave their legacy for future generations like he did. Long Live Mike and the Mechanics.

  • lol, the dad is Richard Belzer who played detective munch on law and order.

Love the song and the memories. It was a great time in my life.

  • I love this song so much. thank you for posting it. The 80's was one of the best decades we have had. as well as the 60's , 70's, and 90's. I wish we could go back to music like this. I may be only 17 but I love this music.

  • That's the late Paul Young singing on this wonderful cut. Do not confuse this Paul Young with the one that had hits with "Every Time You Go Away" and "What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted." The Paul Young show in this video sang with Sad Cafe.

Indeed, these were good times for pop music. What a sad mess it is now, with its pitch-changed female vocalists, Nashville and their godawful Pro Tools manipulation in the studio.

But we've got our memories, don't we?

  • I swear the 80s were corny in a lot of ways, but damn...some of the best music came from that decade

  • How come nobody puts the sax in their songs anymore?

  • Because people forgot what it is.

  • Uwielbiam ich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hermosa canción ochentera, de mis favoritas

  • That's Paul Young singing?! And he died?! The same guy who sang "Come Back And Stay" and other songs?

  • NO!!!! That Paul Young is alive and well. I had made the same mistake as well.

  • "We'll find out what's goin on after the song." HILARIOUS!

  • This song makes me miss the 80's.

  • Awesome song, one of my all time favs! Love it

  • Wow I'd forgotten how many hits this band had. Whatever happened to those great 80's bands?

  • es un gran tema creo que es una de las mejores canciones que se han escrito me identifica mucho

  • I can't imagine Paul Carrack singing lead on this song. Paul Carrack is great, but Paul Young's voice gives this song its memorable quality, its bittersweet tone.

  • I know Paul Carrack did lead on The Living Years

  • Wonderful! I always loved that band!!!! Their concert in 1999 in Munich was one of the best I have ever been to.

  • It makes me remember the "good times"... when I was just a little girl...

  • Ok, here's what I know... Paul Young from the Mechanics died some time ago. He is singing the vocals in this song. He also sang lead vocal on "All I need is a miracle". Paul Carrack (who sang "Tempted" with Squeeze) sang lead vocal on "Silent Running" and "Living Years". Thank you all for keeping this great music alive!

  • this song was playing in my head i found here 2 days later

  • I'm an 80's music fan and i didn't remember the name of this song. This song is freakin' awesome.

This son is one of the best examples of why 80's music is THE MUSIC.

Really thank you for sharing this awesome song.

  • Great song just a shame that Paul young passed away a couple of years ago. They have now finished as a band which is a big shame. Hope they reunite again.

  • the leading vocal is Paul Carreck. It's interesting that the band named.

  • No, it is not Paul Carrack. He did lead vocals on "Miracle". Paul Young did lead on "Taken In". Both were in the band, but swapped vocals. After Paul Young's death, the band was renamed Mike & the Mechanics featuring Paul Carrack.

  • Thanks for the correction. This Paul Young isn't that Paul Young(Everytime you go away), is he?

  • Nope. That Paul Young is alive and well. (And still performing, I believe.)

This Paul Young was also a member of "Sad Cafe'" If you do a search for Mike and the Mechanics on Wiki, you'll see everything... Peace!

  • Wow, the bald Paul is Carreck. The hairy one is Young. Do love Correck's performing in "Living Years" & "Miracle".

  • Not to drag this on, but I beleive Paul Young sang lead on "All I need is a Miracle"!

  • BTW, I damn near fell off my chair when I watched this video for the first time in, what, 10 years, when who do I see playing the father of the other family but Richard Belzer. OMFG. Too funny! From stand up, to music videos, to Law and Order SVU. (After my favorite show, "Homicide: Life on the Streets", of course.) What a kick!

  • people this is NOT paul young.....do u even know what paul young looks like? lol

  • Yes, his name was Paul Young. Not the "Come Back and Stay", "Love of the Common People" Paul Young, but that WAS his name. So, LOL to you, sir, that does not know his music. Give me your email and I will send the references. Wiki it at your leisure.

  • was the "sad cafe" paul young

  • "i'd love to believe you. but you know how to lie."

  • This song has a nice cozy feeling to it....

  • the word "schmuck" was bleeped out like the sound of the beep from the microwave. lol

  • This is a really sweet song. Reminds me of summertime in the '80s. Great driving song.

  • I like when he sings the "I don't believe it!" part. Great song!

  • nice song..and a very naive vid..Paul Young really had a good voice..and this band had good songs too

  • Heart Attack, he was barely 50... RIP

  • How did Paul Young Die? Just wondering. Its sad. Thanks for the great song.

  • THE Best voices ever. . EVER

  • Agreed! I didn't realize that Paul Young did the vocals on this song (that is him, isn't it?). Anyway, it was sad when Young passed away in 2000.

  • Okay, I must be obsessed or something. I am compelled to post my absolute LOVE of this song. AGAIN. Something about the melody HYP-NO-TIZES me. Anyone out there understand?

  • Yes! I completly understand what you mean. I love this song. I could listen to this over and over and never tire of that melody. It can turn my mood around instantly.

  • Thats good to know. I'm not the only one. This song should've been in an 80's movie. It feels cinematic, very vibe-y. Im not sure what movie it would work in...but it could set the tone for sure.

  • Yes it would be perfect for a movie. I am in love with the 80's both music and movies. They don't make them now days the way they did then, they had actual substance and feeling and this song sums up exactly what i love about 80's music. People always tell me i was born in the wrong generation because of my taste in music and movies being that i'm only 24. I do wish i could go back and see this song and many others performed live.

  • Thats funny, cuz i am 24 also!

  • Ha ha that is funny. I'm not the only one my age afterall.

  • Great song... imagine having PAUL YOUNG and PAUL CARRACK in the same band!!!! OMG... How can you lose???????

  • I know. Great combo. I'm bummed that Paul Young died. : (

  • Great video, one of the best of the 1980s. I loved this song. Reminds me of 1985, summer.

  • correction...1986.

  • I love this song. Great track lyrics and vocals. I can relate to this song being that I was engaged to a pathelogical lier and cheat. I had dedicated seven years of my life to. I was seriously taken in. Now he want me back but I can't trust him.

  • Beautiful vocals-who is the lead singer? He kind of sounds like the lead singer for "Ice House", an Australian band. Anyway, they don't make them like they did in the '80s. I could always relate to this song, as I had many friendships that made me feel as though I was taken advantage of-"Someone saw me coming, a fool without a friend." Thanks to age, as wisdom comes with it; away with being gullible. This is still one of my all-time favorite songs, as the music is so melodic and soul-piercing.

  • Icehouse is an awesome group. Great Southern Land is my favorite song by them.

  • The lead singer is the late Paul Young.

  • he was also the lead singer of a great band: sad cafe

  • They have another lead singer who is just as good ... IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT... Paul Carrack! Best vocals in one band EVER!!!

  • @gtmobayer His name was Paul Young (not the "Every Time You Go Away" singer) who died of a heart attack in 2000.

  • You know, if you listen to this melody in the verses, it sounds kind of of like the near ending of Watcher Of The Skies.

    "LISTEN"

  • Yes, you are right. I guess it's some of the same cords Mike used in this song - but still it's different. But a great observation though :-)"Taken In" is one of the best songs from this first album.

  • Yeah, thank you. I think it is one of the most important things. Listening is key. You gain wealth with listening. I produce music and that is an important factor!

  • Dude you are so right on with that one.

  • I don't know why this song makes me feel sooooo sad and yet I love it, I absolutely love it.

  • Perhaps because it's a reminder of good days long gone. 1986 was one of the best years for movies and music---I wish I could have captured whatever was in the air and keep it forever. It was a special time.

  • i couldnt be more agreeable flashpenguin86. there were loads of songs and music in the 80s such as this one-blues. it wasnt the best time for me jobless and peniless but certainly the music those times made it for me. sleight of hand by the ''sultan of swing- dire straits'' will give u a very similar feeling inside young10ten. thanks for putting up ur message guys!

  • I didn't know the lead singer past away? how sad, they were one of my favorite groups in the 80's!!

  • from Ares !!

  • can you tell me guys where I can download the full mp3 of this song?? help me guys.. thanks in advance!

  • just use limewire. i found it there, however i am in canada where downloading isn't illegal yet so be careful.

  • thank you so much!!

  • Did u get it?

  • This song is sooooo cool!

  • I totally agree with flubbieb.

  • Ahhhhhhhh! This vid is all wrong for this song! REDO!!!!

  • kinda hard to do since the lead singer has passed away, now

  • AHHHHHHHHHH Again!!!!!!!

  • ahhhhhhhh can't redo, whooops!!!!

  • That's too bad.

  • Classic hit.

  • What a sweet video! I love Mike Rutherford! :D

  • that vw van is tony bankses

  • who's the British manager? seen his face.

  • I think its the ol boy from willy wonka the original, varucas pops

  • He was Veruca Salts dad, the peanut manufacturer, in the original Willy Wonka movie!

  • Roy Kinnear, he played Mr. Salt in Willy Wonka and the choclate factory. He died in 1988 in horse accident in Spain.

  • Do any of you remember this vid playing on MTV or VH1 when it first came out? Was it considered a 'hit' back then? It's so very rarely played on radio these days, unfortunately.

  • This song/video was a moderate hit when it was released as a single back in 85-86.

  • Ahhh....too bad I was 3 then. I would've really appreciated it.

  • This is one of my favorites from Mike and the Mechanics. Always seemed so romantic to me.

  • This song was my favorite hit from Mike & The Mechanics self-titled release, even though it got stuck at #32 for three weeks (should have gotten higher!)

  • also took me forever to id this song from haunting bits of lyric and melody. thanks.

  • it took me 5 years to remember the name of this dream of a tune

  • a song worth the wait i say. glad you finally found it

  • Love this band ;) and this sweet song !!

  • M1ke + The MeChaN1C5 luv this track.

  • Love the song, love the band (always have), but the best bonus? Belzer in the vid! Yay!

  • Oops sorry I get it now. I just looked it up. I was thinking of the other Paul Young, I thought Paul Carrack looked really different. Anyway RIP indeed.

  • Sorry I don't get the Paul Young reference. Paul Carrack was the lead singer although in this video he has a giant Paul Young fro

  • My favorite song by Mike and the Mechanics, but I would like much better if I could just hear the song and not the people in the video.

  • R.I.P. to vocalist Paul Young. This is one of my favorite 80's tunes and definitely a M+TM greatest hit.

  • One of my fav! I listen to it every week. Yeah not so great video though. I have a better image of this song in my head. Thanks for the vid though.

  • Really great song in an annoying Video. Great lyrics!

  • I still love this song

  • me too

  • Good stuff. Pretty random video w/ the Richard Belzer cameo.

  • i absolutely love this video. Richard Belzer saying "Let's hear the song, let just hear the song," is just classic. One of my all-time personal classics. Gives me the late-night willies.

  • I LOVE this song. Something about it is so dreamlike & surreal...just takes me away...it hypnotises me! But what harsh lyrics! Damn, he's hurtin!

  • I agree with the dreamlike, surreal. I though I was the only one! Yeah harsh licks but great song to listen too. I do have have a better vid than this one lol.

  • I would love to see the better vid! =)

  • Don't have a better vid :( Though I had one but it was off another song! Sorry fluffieb!

  • la primera vez q la escuche, me hizo llorar, las lagrimas me brotaban sin saber por que, una profunda nostalgia entro en mi ser, debio ser mi pasion por el dolor y el placer.

  • A small masterpiece. Just beautiful. Thank you. And thanks , Mike and Friends....

  • 1986 Forever. This song made me think of an ex-girlfriend. 20 years later, i realize i wasn't "taken in". She was the Love of my life, I was the a**. Hey, thats what music's for!

  • Hell yeah man, I hear ya. That's what life's about. Its songs like these that can take you back...

  • Yeah you're right, this song will always remind me of going on vacation with my parents to florida in the summer of 1986!!!

  • flawlessly GREAT!

  • very nice one from them, thanks!

  • This is one of my all time favorites,Great song! Thanks!

  • I LOVE 1:43-1:53

  • I AGREE!!!!!!

  • I also LOVE 2:40-255.

  • Yes, of course! I can't believe this song is so underrated. It very well may be the best song this band made?

  • The first time I heard this song in a long time, I was listening to it for two days non-stop.

  • This is ONE of my favorite songs!!!

  • My favorite song of theirs. Very well-made video, one which doesn't distract much from the song and it's words.

And great cameo by the great Richard Belzer!

  • this song is totally awesome...5 stars...thanks for uploading it again

  • One of their better tunes.

  • Paul Young, who, sadly, passed away, shines on this track!

  • beautiful song, the great mike and the mechanics

  • Was this filmed in Shaloon, Michigan?

  • I wonder if this was filmed in Shalon?, Michigan.

  • It was filmed at Lake Lanier in Georgia.
