@ironknucles99....exactly...th­ink of it...if i burn 1 gram of thermite in ...lets say 5 litres of liquid nitrogen...by instinct...u know the nitrogen will win...with a considerable amount of liquid nitrogen remaining..... when thermite reacts (combusts) it releases 852 kJ/mol while liquid nitrogen absorbs 5.56 kJ/mol so that it can become a gas and escape into the atmosphere....can u see the bias in this experiment....its obvious that liq. N2 would lose in this case...

the ideal ratio is roughly 3 parts rust to 1 part aluminium.

you can figure this out on paper based on the mass of the atoms and how many of each reactant is needed.

it also depends on the type of rust your using.

I highly doubt that. However, your local chemist (or drugstore as I believe you reside in the US of A) stock both powdered aluminium and iron oxide (rust), making the needed ingredients for thermite rather easily accessible.

Have fun experimenting with the ratios, but I have found that 1 part rust to 2 parts aluminium is ideal; although 50:50 works fine, too.

....Please do not use thermite on your neighbours car. However if you do, make sure to film and upload it :D

Their test of which is more powerful - thermite or liquid nitrogen - is worthless. The answer is not very sexy though, it all depends on the relative amounts. Liquid nitrogen couldn't put out a house fire, nor could a thermite reaction survive quenching with a dump truck full of liquid nitrogen. relative amounts.
