I’ll also say that Balanchine choreography, as fiendishly difficult as it is, has the effect of making Russian dancers look a lot younger, it removes about ten years off their faces and their more ponderous Vaganova-based technique. Every Russian dancer I’ve seen dancing Balanchine seems to really get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Even Lopatkina.

She’s lacking speed and amplitude here and most of all she’s lacking that most of important of Balanchine ballerina qualities - daring.
On the other hand, the corps de ballet looks wonderful.
