I have wondered about the pronunciation too. I am born in America, TR Knudtson.

As a boy, the old folks, German and Danes, would call me,, K` noot. Norwegians said, softer on the K,, like,, k-NUD. Or k-NOOT. Prussian, Russian, Poland, Norman and English,, like Kaaa-Noot.

The female probably wasnt showing interest because knut is a reject bear. His mother had rejected him, they usually only do that if there is a reason. That way the unfit bears die and dont reproduce, its called natural selection. Then again, perhaps the mother only abandoned knut because she was messed up from living in a controlled environment.
