I doubt there even was an attack on the boat, it was just another cheap reason to start another war. Those Americans think they are keepers of the peace, but they're always the guys who meddle into the world and start a war if the other side doesn't agree with them.

@TheMamaluigi2 the 2nd attack is a hoax, 2 days earlier, the ship was in their waters, trying to provoke a response, so that the military intelligience could monitor and plot locations of coastal defences (De Soto runs). The Vietnamese were also angry because a few days earlier, 2 of their islands had been heavily bombarded by artillery. The US made it SEEM like retaliation, but the missions were designed to create a trigger for military action.

My Dad served on the USS Turner Joy ....he said that the Turner Joy responded to the attack on the USS Maddox. The crew was told about torpedoe attacks and was on alert but he didnt personally witness them ... none the less the North Vietnamese did fire on the Maddox.

You're right about Maddox being fired upon, indeed in 1995 Giap admitted the first attack was deliberate, but denied the second took place.
