Dogs can smell and hear better then us. Does that mean we can't smell or hear? Animals have good brains, just not as developed as ours. The use of tools isn't just for humans as we tend to believe
I think all animals use tools. Today I just saw a catapiller type animal use a small peice of bark as a mobile home, it had a hollow hole in it and its bottom half sat in the hole while the bead and legs part moved around. so it had a mobile home just like the octopus can. I think all animals are consciously aware of thier own existence and reality
no one taught the crow to make the tool. they do it in the wild too. as for teaching being something that separates us from animals; plenty of animals teach their young skills, alter the environment, and interact with other species. oh and there is no difference between humans and animals. we ARE animals.
I would argue that humans, simply due to evolution, tend to have a much more developed intellect (the same way that hawks have eyes infinitely better than ours, or how dogs can smell much better than we can). I do not, however, believe this automatically robs other animals of self-awareness or whatever else one wants to argue for
Wow! I think we have a revolution on our hands. First we discovered monkeys made tools in the wild, and we can teach birds to.. what else can we teach animals to do? If we can teach animals to make and use tools, and they teach their young the same who KNOWS where we'd get.
wow ... that was stupid. Crows and 'monkeys' ... by which im guessing u mean apes are smart animals and hence can perform these tasks. But not all animals can !
that video and research were done @ The Behavioural Ecology Research Group @ Oxford University. you can google it for more info, it won't let me post the url in a comment. it is fascinating stuff! i love betty the crow :)
I am so glad that you know! I shall google this to find more information. I have been in love with the clip since the first time I saw it a few years ago.
its amazing how he bends the wire specifically to make a hook, the kind of problem solving intellegence that requires is a very complex proces. wow very cool thanx for posting!

Wow, I could have used that crow when I lost my ring down the drain. The plumber just did what the crow did and charged me a hundred bucks.

more than just bending it ....apparently the crow had some idea that it COULD be bent unlike a stiff dry twig.

No problem. I doubt I'd think to make a hook in that situation!

originally this was filmed by a crew of scientists. I found it posted on Neil Gaiman's blog a few years ago, and wanted to share it with all of you.
