I've lived in Japan for six years and I can tell you the whole high pitched voice thing is an act. Japanese women have perfectly normal voices, but are expected to act "cute" so they often fake having high pitched childish voices. Especially in the entertainment industry where "cuteness" is considered critical.  It's not their real voice though. They don't talk like that in private.

@KennyGJE They sound like any other person. An Asian is just as capable of singing opera as anyone else. It's just opera is a European art form and not popular in Japan (Japan has much older vocal theater traditions). In many traditional forms of Japanese music women sing with very deep voices. The excessively childish high pitched voices are a result of the modern cultural obsession with "Cuteness" and are an act.

@Tsumanne Actually, it started off as an act maybe 30 or 40 years ago. Today, children are raised in this place where they watch cuteness on tv, they pick up things from their (younger) parents, they pick it up from school. Now, it is the most common way to communicate, this form of speech is actually making its way into national broadcasting news networks. It is second nature to act this way. You are not normal if you don't do so. I've been a school teacher in japan for 8 years.

@Pandurrpie yep, the trend became very noticeable in the 70s and had taken off with a vengeance by the 90s. There are endless sociological theories as to why it developed. A mandatory part of the culture in many respects now, but it's still just a recent trend regardless (less than 100 years is recent in my book). Sadly I don't see it going away anytime soon... Been in Japan 6 years now and the superficial cuteness act still drives me nuts.
