  • Grande batterista

  • Not bad but not as good as Ringo,

  • Gene Was The Man.....Huge influence in my life I even have this exact same drum set...

  • The KING :o)

  • Phenomenal, the best drummer ever - end of!!!

  • 2 people who watched this need serious help

  • Of all the solos I've listened to this is one of the few that I can just sit back and enjoy. I loves me some Krupa.

  • Is it a true story that when Kiss drummer Peter Criss was a kid, he took drum lessons from Gene Krupa?

  • 2 people don't even know how to hold the drumsticks

  • I knew Gene. Besides being the super master drummer, he3 was the nicest guy you would ever want to meet.

  • drummers today just make noise for the sake of it......gene made the drums sing with swing

  • Krupa was also the nicest man in the business. "If you couldn't get along with Krupa, you couldn't get along with anyone"

  • I had the good fortune of seeing Gene live twice when I was young. It was incredible, and yeah sure there are more technical drummers but Gene worked with the band the best I've seen. He convinced me to take up drums after he came to our table and joined us for a beer between sets. A very genuine individual and superb musician. I'm older now of course but still play and respect the advice and inspiration he gave me. I hope some of you will be inspired by his great music too!

  • gene krupa is class

  • gene krupa is class

  • Buddy Rich have a great technics, but I still prefer Gene Krupa. He's got amazing style!

  • like to see lil'wayne do that. and a synthesizer doesnt count.

  • on a side note: this really blew my mind.......see if you can find the clip of Mickey Roonie playing the drums. Along with his many other talents...singing, dancing, acting.....he was a drummer as well. For someone not known for even playing, I was amazed......ya gotta see it

  • GK may or may not have been a "better" drummer than Rich, but it seems to me that he played for the pure enjoyment that drumming gives one. Rich was an ego maniac. IMHO.

  • Im in a Punk bank called "Shoot It Up" and Im the drummer. I take a lot of jazz influence in my music. Gene Krupa is one of my favorites.

  • he was a stoner

  • Why, don't you know TRAVIS BARKER COMPLETELY RULES and THERE ARE NO OTHER DRUMMERS?! Travis Barker invented the drums, as a matter of fact.

  • @JimGawthrop Gene Krupa was around WAY longer than Travis. Barker is from this century. Krupa was around in the 30's

  • Robert Johnson was a major influence for guitarists and the same can be said about Gene Krupa for drummers. Gene beat the savage tempo out of Jazz. This man was amazing and his talent was extra ordinary. Every drummer on this planet since the 30`s have crossed thru Gene`s style. This Man is a gaint in music history. The Best of the Best. Period!

  • man drum and nothing more hes perfect !

  • The forerunner of Keith Moon. Gene Krupa was the Master of indiscriminate drumming

  • in this video you can really see who keith moon was influenced by

  • @cheesesteak93 im starting to see that too this is the first video ive seen of him.

  • Gene's persona seeps through the drums. Hes so quirky, you can't not love him.

  • Gene Krupa will always be THE BEST and I have seen them all

  • He is Kramer's old man. Web rumour pass it on

  • the NO1 drummer of all time...had everything going for him yes i like rich and belson too but for me gene had so much style when he played...the diffrence between buddy and gene is simple .....gene played like no other and looked damn cool doing it....but hey!!!! it's my opinion and everyone can have thiers

  • he looks like kramer

  • I have always thought Krupa had the edge on the others but could never describe why.

The comments on this page have put it very well.

Krupa had a smooth, continuous, easy beat.

Mind you, watch the drummer in "Big noise blew in from Winetka", he is so relaxed it is unbelievable.

  • I met the great Gene Krupa several times in my life. He definitely influenced my playing style. I am now 67 and still playing drum solos in a big band, Check out my drum solo "Bob Pettinicchi Tribute to Gene Krupa" on the Gene Krupa drum solo page. It is my little tribute to a great drummer and a legend !! Thanks

  • both gene & buddy are great drummers like many others out there .. a lot of drummers followed the way these men played and i hope the new drummers these days keep these legends alive, thanks for posting.

  • Krupa and Rich was just like Bonham vs Moon there was no better drummer just two different styles both Masters of the Drums

  • The difference between Krupa and Rich is like the difference between Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. Buddy Rich, like Fred Astaire, was technically perfect but Krupa, like Gene Kelly, was all heart and soul and style and was clearly having fun.

  • whats about Louie?

  • The Man!No double kickers,10 ride toms and 30 cymbals to hide behind.LESS IS MORE when you have this rare talent.Let me say this my friends"KRUPA AND RICH WERE BRILLIANT".Don't let me forget BOHNAM. They were true MASTERS.Great music and talent is ETERNAL!

  • @charger4079 u forgot Moon

  • Comment removed

  • Krupa - soul; Rich - violence. Both great.

  • I never thought my ideas about the two would be validated by someone else...in exactly the same words..Detection of soul in drumming takes a special ear and gut feel.

The drummer has to do it...but the listener has to receive and be moved by it.

Same thing with the dance comment about dance above. Great vid, great comments, yuou guys.

    Tom Loughlin Jr Utica NY

  • He's a cowhide kicking fool!!! Swing it Mr. G!

  • Harriet's uncle the unforgettable smoothest and best solo entertainer on DRUMS 'Gene Krupa' .

  • The difference between Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa is,,,, Rich was a great mechanic and time keeper but Krupa was the rhythm master and had the feel...

  • Anyone who watches this and still thinks drummers like Barkey, Ulrich, or Jordison deserve a spot in the top 10 should be clubbed.

  • @nocturnezero

It's Blakey not barkey. Yo dont make fun of one of the real genius'es of the JZ. It's ART BLAKEY . Ulricha is just a tv presenter- she's alright . . . and I think you'll find its Duke Jordan not Jordisan.

    Laters

  • @nocturnezero

    THANK YOU!

  • @nocturnezero Actually, all of them are great

  • @nocturnezero In someway, your right. I hate to say it, because I love metal, but Gene Krupa is literally the basis to all drumming. I think that there are better drummers.. NO, there is DEFINATELY better drummers, but none like Krupa.

  • @nocturnezero

you should be clubbed for that stupid comment

  • People can argue that Buddy Rich is "technically" a better drummer....and probably is.......but I just do not enjoy listening to him....don't like his style....I could listen to Krupa all day though

  • Comment removed

  • I'll second that !!

  • @inkey2 you took the words right out of my mouth (see my comment on his drumming battle with B Rich on YouTube)

  • @inkey2 Buddy's influenced by this guy big time. I see alot of Gene's playing in Buddy. The only thing Buddy may have had on Gene was speed. Speed doesnt equate to Technique. I do admire Buddy, but I wouldnt say he was better than Gene.

  • @believer06 ___yeah, I am a guitarist and I say the same thing about people like Eric Clapton. Clapton can play 10 notes per second all over the neck but I just do not enjoy listening to him. I could listen to george harrison songs all day but i get tired of clapton pretty fast.

  • @inkey2 Rich was a lot flashier, Krupa more musical!

  • @inkey2 Amen. Krupa's more enjoyable to listen to. Rhythm and a more infectious style over "technique." Also, nobody made drumming look as fun as he did.

  • @inkey2 All you gotta know is that without Krupa, there is no drums or rich!

Rich stole all krupas glory, techniques and fame!, DAMN YOU RICH!

  • He looks like Keith Moon. Mmm I wonder

  • I thought the same thing when I watched this video. He, like Gene Krupa, looked like they really loved what they were doing and were having a great time at it. He must have influence Moon in some way.

  • Man! That Gene is the King! Never heard a drummer play like that since Keith Moon!

  • My favorite YouTube Krupa clip - everything works!

  • Great video, thanks. And, apparently a great man.

  • it's so amazing to watch this stuff....you hear about these guys and to be able to actually watch these video is just so incredible. Thanks for posting!

  • mm... Can't argue with that.

  • It's fantastic to see where the drum solos ,

as we know them today, started from.

From King Gene himself, in the early days.

  • As if the sheer magic of his playing wasn't enough, the passion that emanates from him penetrated your soul. And, he was the nicest, gentlest guy you ever wanted to meet.

  • Yeah, my grandparents met Gene and that's exactly what they said about him. Nicest, most down-to-earth person they'd ever met. Unfortunately, Gene died a few years before I was born, but I did get to meet another all-time great drummer who I would definitely say is the nicest professional musician I ever met and that's Louie Bellson. Two all-time greats who will never be forgotten.

  • That is spot on. Totally agree.

  • Here we go again....

It is a Gene Krupa video - why oh why do we have to mention Buddy bloody Rich at all?

The constant insistence that "Buddy was best" by these sycophantic hero worshippers drives me nuts.

It's bloody music, not WWF wrestling!

Krupa was a great entertainer for many decades and a great innovator and inspiration to millions of drummers.

There is no need to bring anyone else into it! :-(

  • I just love the tone of his drumset. Todays drums have a fake plastic tone to them, compared to the old style sets.

  • Yeah! They made great drums then! Mr Krupa always used Slingerland drums, and was also responsible for developing what You might call the modern drum kit. He an d Slingerland developed the first toms with tunable resonant heads. Also back in those days the heads were made of calf skin, rather that the plastic ones used today!

    Gene forever!!

    Cheers!

  • Too true mate!!

If it wasnt for Gene...all us drummers wouldnt be who we are today!

  • Exactly!... He was one of the most influential drummers of all time! Everybody is compared to him. He set the standard that everybody has to live up to!

Makes me wanna work even harder! :-)

  • This might be old,but drummers today can learn a lot from this footage .Note Gene's gradual build up, before he lets loose. He was certainly at his best when he was young.Ill health slowed him down later, sadly.Far to early in his career.

  • fantastic-

    thanks for uploading this!

  • gene kruper and buddy rich . would see anybody off hitting a bin lid.

these heavy rock guys bury themselves behind hundreds of drums and then think there good. you try getting the variation KRUPER AND RICH get off a few drums.

I think TONY MEEHAN and BRIAN BENETT off the SHADOWS were brilliant . also check out CLEM CATINI.hes played on over 47 number one hits spaning from the 50s. also turned down LED ZEPLIN . so BONHAM got the seat.

SANDY NELSONS dam good also .

  • A man at his happiest,behind a drum kit.

  • Damn fast, too! Wow, such music and ferocity!

  • The driving Gene Krupa!!!

  • Gene Krupa was amazing but Buddy Rich was number 1...

  • Its not a contest, plus its all subjective so THIS will never end.

  • If you compare Gene Krupa from 1937-1947 to Buddy Rich from around that same time period, you know who comes out on top! Gene was the best! More power, more feeling, more showmanship, more creativity, more taste, more originality! Gene Krupa!!!!

  • the best drummer ever

  • You drummers notice how far back on the stick Gene holds his sticks? He gets bounce for every ounce! Wonderful drummer!

  • He rocks!

  • the man.

  • 1 word.....GOD

  • One of the best swing drummers EVER! And a great showman too! Great Chops!

  • Mega Smoky..

  • Krupa's the f&*#in man!!

  • no it wasent it was zutty singleton and baby dodds one or the other started the drum solo.

if you dont believe me read: Jazz the complete story

  • Krupa was the first drummer to bring the drums out as solo instrument. Rock on Gene.

  • Listen to the snapping and popping he gets out of that Radio King snare drum at the end. Awesome.

  • I read where Dick Dale said he patterned his guitar playing after Krupa's style of drumming. I can see what he means

  • My dad said he may be the greatest drummer ever. Seeing him, I think he would steal the show in any venue. Amazing!

  • Wow, Most rock drummers can't even rock that hard. Go Gene!!!!

  • I don't think Rock drummers can rock that hard!

  • Todd, I guess you have not heard Jeff Halle. You would be amazed!

  • Lols at half thought out social debates.

  • Krups was the best. Thats it. Simply THE BEST!!

  • Krupa had a really good groove but for solos I would choose Buddy Rich.

  • It's interesting to modern jazz players that he said if you couldn't dance to his solo, he felt it wasn't making it. Don't forget this is when jazz was simpler, rhythmic, with a "solid beat." Great times for jazz. The public left it when it became too intellectual and lost its feeling of swing..

  • I wish Jazz still sounded this good!

  • I met him several times and talked to him. He doffed his cap to Buddy once, saying, "Just listen to how Buccy plays." Mel Torme also tells a similar story in his bio of Buddy. Gene was the first, unique, and the greatest showman of them all.

  • Spectacular. Intense to no end. Was this guy in the zone? I think he created the zone.

  • Geney was a punk rocker

  • I became a very successful drummer in the 60's, 70's & 80's (studio) and always remember where I learned..from the man himself, Gene Krupa!

  • Is that right, adman1048? That's awesome. I think ANY drummer who hasn't at least listened to these great guys can't really understand the meaning of tasteful and subtle drumming. I grew up listening to Sandy Nelson records and based my own style on that, and took in as much of the 'old' stuff as I could. You never stop learning!

  • what song is that sole from? btw maybe you guys hate punk because you havent listened to good punk bands like the Ramones. Theyre melodic and simple.

  • ya ur right

not all punk is bad, there's some out there that are worth listening to at least once or twice

  • Listen to me: ALL punk sucks.

  • These videos are great but seeing the man work in person is so much better. I used to catch Gene Krupa at the Metropole in NYC. He was on one end of the stage and maybe Jo Jones at the other with every big name in jazz in between. When he did a solo, everyone looked and listened. The man was magic and he obviously loved what he was doing. Great memories of great musicians.

  • Gene Krupa rocks...Tommy Lee has said he patterned his style after Genes.

  • I used to think I hated drum solos...And I still so with narcoleptic stadium rock. Krupa ia something else entirely, though.

  • His solos always stay interesting -- lots of nice tonal tricks, pauses, always with a very strong rhythm. Wish I could say the same for most other drummers. and that includes Neil Peart in my opinion (blasphemy I know).

  • In alot of ways he is the best of all time, he had the showmanship alot of chops, a great band(although I don't like alot of the music too much in the they're time) and he made drummers famous! We love you Gene!

  • Magnificent drummer.

  • how is this punk? punk is trash music, and this isnt.

  • the music is not punk rock music. I was commenting on his flair for agressive performance, which at the time this was recorded was unheard of for drummers. Krupa brought drummers and the drum solo (for better or worse) to the front of the stage. So to speak, and the way he did it was so agressive and unconventional for the time period that I consider it cutting edge, or punk if you will.

  • Ah ok.. i just wanted to make sure u werent making a similarity of this music towards punk which would be a disgrace for gene.

  • Sure there were flashy drummers at that time. Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Jo Jones, J.C. Heard, Cozy Cole, Etc, Etc, Etc. Gene Krupa brought another demension to the instrument. He could make magic with his sense of timing and his solo skills. He was a different piece of work.

  • You sure know your drummers MaryAnn! Nice comment!

  • Is right.

Gene Krupa was also the first ever 'famous drummer'. He was the first drummer to become a household during his time.

  • A big influence on a lot of rock drummer most notably Keith Moon.
