we just started a rugby team at our college. we are getting ready to play other schools and tournaments. this past year ive really gotten into this sport.
My take on why rugby football is not popular in the U.S. is because it has the Ivy League elitist affiliation. That is it is not thought of as "blue collar." Does this make sense ?
@jaegerhund the funny thing is though all around the world at an amateur level it is largely blue collar guy playing it, i know that in england as you progress through competitive levels the players of a certain 'pedigree' seem to be favoured over working class players.
@robfive0 Yeah---- I've come to understand this. In the U.S. , rugby is mostly played at private (independent) High Schools and taken somewhat seriously at Ivy League universities and other highly respected universities. But I think this is starting to change. As a southerner, I've never seen a ruby game in person other than some poor execution on a college campus.
how is rugby treated over there in the states? is it respected or is it a joke? has there been progress since 2007? and have there been more people joining the sport? just wanting to know
@MATT84z It's big with colleges because we don't get a chance to play in school or anything. I'm on the college team and after my first game I was hooked. Unfortunately it's not popular on TV or anything. It's not really talked about
@1Watchmen1 well there are way to change that, if you talked with people out side the sport like guys who faial to make a football team. try and get them into the wonders of this amazing game
@MATT84z it is growing i play in a high school leauge and we've added 2 or 3 teams a year now its respected by most but ppl think its to dangerous to play
@hockeyfreak350 i see, thats good to know that it is slowly growing, do you believe that their fear of the dangours of the sport is of lack of knowledge perhaps?
@MATT84z its getting better. i go to georgia periemeter college and we just started a team. we are still in early practice/learning stages but we have at least 15 guys out there ready and girls are scarce. but some people are scared after i got hurt 2 weeks ago and one of the other guys dislocated his shoulder. but you just have to play smart and you will be fine. things happen but its like any other sport.
@biggestgreendayfan true that im 17 and i got 2 fucked knees and a destroy ankle. but all from freak accidents and playing for weakk teams. What the states needs is for the game to expand to more reigons with 7s then go to 15s.
when that happens usa will go good in RWCs and other tournaments. i believe that countries like the usa, russia, china and the phillapins can be a major players like NZ in years to come if they invest wisely and keep growing the game.
i think the talent pool is there, but it's hard to get recognition in 7s. I'm a high school player, and i can tell you that 3/4 of the year is dedicated just for 15s, and 7s is only over the summer and isn't really taken seriously. There really isn't any progression structure from local club to Eagles 7s like there is in 15s, it's treated as just something to do over the summer. I personally want to make it onto the team but am at a loss as to how i could get noticed... O.o
@JPthePanMan best thing you can try to do is make selectside for whatever state your from they all play in a tourney in early june in aspen where all the national scouts are
Let me start of by saying I support USA Rugby to the fullest. Now, with that said. Are you serious, is this the fastest guys we can find in Rugby 7's. You got to be kidding me. We will not be good in 7's or 15's unless we get serious about getting real athletes into rugby. I'm going to be real if we put the best 7's team out from the US. More then 80% of the team would be black, and that's just truth. I'm not saying there are not some really fast white guys but come on.
Thanks for asking Nick. First all let me start off by saying I'm not racist. I just want the best players to play, and I don't see that in US Rugby. I stated played in Idaho, and North Cali, I also played for a team in Korea. I do think that some players for US rugby are great players. Todd Clever, Z, Chris Wiles. I realize that American Football is going to take some of the best athletes, but the selection process for USA Rugby players is messed up. You have to be in a good ole boy system.
@Perryhdp It's weird but doesn't always work like that. This Dubai Sevens just gone i saw plenty of black speedsters from the African nations(kenya, zimbabwe) etc get run down and burned by white British players.
No doubt as a whole Africans are generally faster, but speed itself isn't enough. You only have to look at the number of countries who win despite having no black players to see the point.
If your argument held weight Kenya and Zimbabwe would win every time. But they don't.
they start a professional provincial circuit in 2013,sevens brings olympic funding so things will change quickly in usa

if the monetary incentives in the US were 1/10 of the amounts for american football, USA would have a fucking amazing rugby team

@z0mgrugbyreturns Also, Leonard Peters the ex college football guy is now playing sevens for the USA. So it's not as if they aren't trying.
I imagine there's alot of fast guys who don't get selected because they lack the basic sevens skills.
z0mgrugbyreturns 2 years ago
@Perryhdp Also, I'm pretty sure Ngwenya came through the USA sevens ranks. And he runs like a 10.4 100 metre, and is black.
