had a 01 gts motor......nasty noise came around and now i have a 00 gts motor. as soon as i heard it i knew she was dead. tow it get a new motor. ran me 1850 for motor with install
Either one of the cylinders is diesel (yuk yuk) or it could be Piston slap developing after high miles wears the lower skirt of the piston or possibly worn wrist pin.
can you please explain me what 1zz and 2 zz mean? i just got myself a MT 01 GT. looking for a muffler and intake, but they ask me if mine is a 1zz or 2zz.
@bminsein if you have yet to dig around and find out what the difference is
the 1zz motor is the fuel economy edition just a basic standard compression motor
the 2zz motor is toyota's performance edition it has a higher compression ratio and there are a few other differences between them i can't remember all of them
@rustangcobra : Hey I have 2002 Toyota celica and it has the same noise like your car did. Did replacing rod bearing helped at all and what else did you do to fix it. Thak you.

@datka1980 ; After I changed the rod bearings, the crank would not turn over by hand or with the starter motor. Basically the rod bearings were oval shaped instead of round. I sold the car for $2k in non running condition even though it was worth $4-5k in running condition. I now have a BMW 335i convertible and no longer have to worry about it. Used celica motors were around $2k so it just wasn't worth it to me.
Honestly, It sounds much like a worn bearing in the pistons, which is easy to fix, if you know how to take the engine, out, I'm currently working on this problem myself. I'm removing the engine, taking the crank shaft, and pistons out so that I can look over the crank shaft making sure it is not bent, and checking the all the piston bearings for wear, I'll probably replace all of them to be safe.
it happent to me too and my engine broke now im waiting to get a new engine. The only thing u can do now is put a lot of oil and dont enforce the engine like dont go high RPM
do you still hear knocking sound during acceleration if so it's the engine block that's knocking you can either change the block or get a new motor and throw it in there
I had the same problem on my celica 2001. Mine had 64,0000 miles on clock and i had to have the crank re-ground as toyota were adamantly not willing to help me, although there is an extended warranty covering 7 years or 112,000 miles as long as the car has been serviced SOLELY by toyota. A service by anyone else will void the warranty - which is utterly rediculous. Some don't advise re-grinding the crank, however it worked for me, cost £1,100 though.

Mine it that bad. Mine just makes that noise in idle. Once I get passed 1500 or 2000 rpm it goes away.

I pulled the oil pan and found that 6 out of 8 rod bearings had spun. By the way, it is a 2000...I can give you the VIN if you care to doubt me.

Yep, you need a new engine...see my video, exactly the same as yours.
Engine is a goner. You could get it fixed, but cheaper to get a new engine.

I've got this as well, though yours sounds harsher. Have a look at my video of it...
