It's not an accident at all and nothing has gone horribly wrong.

The whole point of the ride is that you're able to turn yourself if you want to because of being stuck to the wall. The wall against your back has a surface that stops you from sliding unless you physically want to. Which is why everyone else is upright. You can only move round if you push yourself with some force as it's hard to press against the G's that are being put on your body.
