geeweev, I've been to America and I've experienced the 'style' of police officers there. It is COMPLETELY different to police elsewhere, Europe for example. They are so fast to be aggressive unless you are an apologising, hunble, obedient citizen. If u stall or in any way hesitant to produce ID or a drivers licence they caution you & have a hand on there taser or handgun. They r expecting u to be a criminal whether u are black or white. I will say the Cambridge police were very STUPID in arresting Prof Gates, I robbery in the middle of the afternoon should have been more of a story. It's not a crime to yell at cops. the facts are that at the time of the arrest, Gates had already showed his ID to the officers while he was in his own home. That's when the police officially stopped investigation on the burglary.

The other fact is that it is not a crime to yell and act like a jerk. Disorderly conduct or loud and tumultuous behaviour (what he was charged with) has to disturb the public. That can't happen on your own property.

They didn't have just cause to arrest him so, yes, their actions were stupid.

Law enforcement personnel need to exude an air or authority and power to do their job. Why is this an issue? That demeanor have saved countless lives including their own! They need to make criminals believe that they are a force to reckon with. Why do people keep guard dogs? I think that Gates made a big mistake bringing race into the discussion, and accusing the cop of being a racist. Poor move on his part, which may have led to his arrest. Since there was also a black cop on the scene, it's very unlikely race was a motive on their part.

First of all, I am a white guy, that had a situation way worse than this many years ago. For no reason a white rookie cop came onto my property, and inside my house. He insulted me, threatened me, threatened to bring dogs into my house, and detained all of my workers. The cop was 100 times worse, and way more rude than this cop Crowley. In fact, Crowley was an angel by comparrison. I never even insulted the cop, and was very polite, even though he was a jerk. So it's not about racism!
