Streaming is great, but I must say, there is something about opening up a new cd or vinyl. I'm not exactly sure what it is. . .maybe the feel, the smell. You're able to see and touch a tangible thing. There's just something about having that tangible thing that I love. It just adds to the experience for me.
Dont like streaming, for some reason. One reason is that i have to be sitting in front of my laptop to listen, sometimes i what to play along on my kit and listen in the car. And then if the connection is slow its just annoying.
A quick word on people downloading, I know people that like yourself have thousands of files, But do you think they listen to it all? I dont. And now with all the illegal downloads this is what happens, you just get an album just to have it. People like having stuff.
@BrendanJonesDrums Two good points. 1 - We're not always in a place with WiFi, so streaming isn't always possible. 2 - People listen to something once or twice, and then it just becomes part of a "collection."
First of all thanks Mr Primack! this is the one channel I never skip episodes on- love what you re featuring. and Interesting topic! Everyone seems to have their own way to deal with the choices for availability of music. I have one main concern about streaming and impact it may have on artists - specifically - how does a service like Spotify deal with major labels vs indie producers? This shapes greatly our relationship with music.PS- Buying from the artist direct is great when you can.
@gpmitchell Good question about Spotify and artists. How do artists get paid when their music appears on Spotify? I'm going to research that and get back to you.
I listen to music to LISTEN to it, not necessarily to own it, or to read the accompanying liner notes. No time! Spotify streaming is the thing for me over the last year. Obviously, YouTube has been sensational. I do pay for the Spotify, but the free version is cool too. The adverts you have to put up with the freebee version are not too onerous. And the jazz library is enormous. The CDs and vinyls now just receive an occasional dusting down, only to be admired... from a distance.
@hahabass You make a good point. In the end, its really about the music. 78s. LPs, 8 tracks, cassettes, CDs, MP3 files, streaming, they're just the vehicle.
I like the streaming music services but I do perfer to buy...simply to have it as a part of my library and to support the artist and the genre ( jazz or Gospel) that I like.
Organization and management of digital material is one of the dirty little subjects not talked about much. The box of photos has been replaced by the jumble of files with names like DSC000027.jpg.
In fact, I find it easier to organize music tracks than ever before (once they're digital). I use MediaMonkey, which does a great job of tagging and organizing files.
Although I've listened to streaming music for years, I doubt I'd ever opt for that only.
@slideguy07 Media Monkey, I gotta check that out. I'm with you, a combination of everything. My problem with streaming is that I'm not always online. Wi-Fi is great, but it's not everywhere, especially in the car.
@JazzVideoGuy Not everything actually... Not the very new releases of emerging artists for example, but almost! I was actually surprised to find many different things. For example I am reading The History of Jazz, and with Spotify I can actually listen to all the tunes it talks about, right year, right show, all the versions... Convenient ;)
I have to own the music that I really love. Absolutely.
It may be a CD, or a digital file, but I want to pay for it, to be able to listen it always when I need it.
But on the other hand, it would be great to listen some music that I do not know. I do not want buy it, at least yet. Maybe I will. But for now I only want to listen it.
So, if I can stream it for reasonable price, it's good...
But the idea to listening only streamed music is unacceptable for me.
I just seem to listen to MP3s or I stream music anymore. I do like owning the MP3s though, just so I'm not tied to having an internet connection to listen to music. I haven't bought a physical CD in years and I do miss having access to liner notes but the convenience of MP3s and streaming music is unbeatable.
I always felt that if I am going to pay for music, I want to own it. However, I rarely take the time to fumble around with my CD's, let alone cassettes anymore. Over the last few years I have been streaming most of my music off youtube so I think I'm more open to paying for a streaming service now if it had a large enough library to choose from especially if I could use it on my phone. My only concern is that phone data is pretty expensive and streaming uses a lot of data. Oh ya and.. First!

@BizzMarki Why is phone data so expensive? Kind of like cable tv, there just isn't enough competition.
