I used to record these shows on my Panasonic tape player with the external microphone draped over the armrest of a chair close to the TV speaker.I have had every single note of these three songs burned in my memory for the past 40 years and I am flabergasted to finally be able to see this again after so many years. Thanx much.
Wait, wait, you're telling me ABC actually had good music on? Whenever ABC does their summer concert series it's always some pop sensation. One time, ONE TIME it was Eric Clapton, with John Mayer. Why doesn't ABC put really good bands on their show?
@PaulHartXYZ don't know about tull,i can tell you that alice cooper chopped off a dolls' head, and the show was blacked out in ohio. this was a great real concert program, unlike don kirsheners[may he r.i.p.] " rock concert", which was a glitzy, over produced, too well lit, and above all, too wolf man jack'afied, bubble gum affair.
ABC In Concert. Absolutely the best concert show ever! Real halls, real concerts, real responses from audience and band. Listen at 5:30. DAMN, DAMN, DAMN! Thanks so much for the post.
We had a local FM station that would simulcast the audio (anything was better than the TV speakers then!) Sometimes the audio from the radio station would get out of sync with the TV broadcast, but never too badly!
I remember watching this in my dorm room and being nervous for Dickey because he seemed so alone fronting the band. And poor Butch looks like he is gonna cry. Sad memories
Kohntarkosz, you are correct about One Way Out not being the first song in the performance. The first song in the performance was Ramblin' Man. This was the premier episode of ABC In Concert. This was Berry Oakley's final performance. He died in a motorcycle accident a week later.
@countymounty8513 Did you notice that in this clip they show Gregg getting set up to play the guitar, but then of course he's playing the electric piano. They must have edited it wrong. I think he plays guitar on one of the other songs.
@Jamdor78 I saw NUTs about the Allman Brothers back then. Saw the original lineup about 30 times and the 72, 73 and 1974 lineups many times with Chuck Leavel. What they did in late 72 through about 1974 was begin with Wasted Words with Gregg playing guitar and usually it was a Fender Strat and Dickey playing slide guitar. Then they would do Must Have Done Somebody Wrong with Gregg still on guitar and Dickey on slide. Then Gregg would move to the keyboards for One Way Out, Stormy Monday, Ramblin'
I used to watch In Concert when I was in high school. It came on at 11:30 PM and was also broadcast on KLOS FM in stereo. And it was only one of several similar TV shows. No fancy production. No flashy stage shows. Just honest music that spoke for itself. Another great example to check out is 'The Kinks-Victoria. Hi-Fi TV show"
Anyone notice that Gregg picks up his Strat at the begining. Looks like they might have played at least once song before One Way Out. I wonder if that footage still exists somewhere, though it's unlikely.
The shows I saw in 1972, Gregg didn't play guitar and Chuck wasn't there either. It was a five man band. But I saw several in 1973 after Chuck joined and Gregg did play a black Fender Strat on the first two songs while Dickey played slide (I think on a Gibson SG and a sunburst LP for lead) and those first two songs everytime were Wasted Words and Must Have Did Somebody Wrong. Then One Way Out, Stormy Monday, Ramblin Man and Liz Reed. After a break they did a second set the times I saw in 73.
B.O. died between the taping and broadcast of this show. They said that it was like watching a ghost when it aired. What a weird feeling that musta been. R.I.P. Duane and Berry
@TonyTyler --I saw this very show and they announced B.Oakley had died 2 weeks after taping after the show aired--I'll never forget seeing that--and it was almost 38 years ago--I read somewhere he died 2 blocks away from where Duane died ??
This video is heart breaking after watching the video with Duane up at You Tube. Gregg's bringing it obviously and his performance is stellar. Dickey seems so alone out front all by himself but still putting his all into it - the fans over the top - but its all just killing Berry you can tell he is just crushed to be on stage without Duane - his hearts not in it - he walks off camera behind the drum kits Butch's face too man oh man it must have been brutal - Berry :(
@rayoll Berry's bass was called The Tractor, not The Truck. Legend has it he wanted a modified bass to rival what Jack Cassidy played in Starship (Jack's bass was called Mission Control.) Some of the ABB band members or roadies made the remark that Berry's bass was as ugly as a tractor. Hence, the name.
Berry's last gig, and the ONLY show he performed with new piano player Chuck Leavell. Tragic. The band had just started to climb out of the hole Duane's death had left them in a year earlier. Seeing Berry here is very moving for me. He was THE greatest bass player in rock. Thanks so much for posting this video!
I remember seeing this on the tee-vee when it was first broadcast. We were a bunch of AB fans still mourning the death of Duane, and then Berry died just before this was shown, so this was Berry's last gig....damn, so much sadness around this great band. After Duane died they added Chuck Leavell on piano; this show was their first and only gig with Chuck and Berry Oakley. Berry was the greatest bass player I've ever heard. Listen to his playing on Mountain Jam on Eat A Peach - just incredible.
I have a reel to reel of this. It was one of first stereo symocasts on network television. The beginning of some songs phase as they link up signals.

Wow, I know its not fair, but on "One Way Out," all I can "hear" is the absence of Duane's slide.
