It is a sax. The tubax you're talking about still has the same fingerings as any other sax and it still has a conical bore like any other sax. It just goes by a different name.
You should research a bit. Only two contrabasses were ever built. One didn't play at all and the other required more than one person to blow and press the keys and could not even play a full scale. The closest thing to a subcontra is a B-flat Tubax which is actually smaller than a contrabass sax.
There were quite a few contrabasses made at the beginning of the 19th century. It sounds like you're referring to those freak-of-nature mock saxophones (you're right in that one did not play and the other required a number of people to play because the pads and keys were not hooked up - it was apparently a prop for a show or something that they turned into a playing instrument).
wouldn't any saxophone lower than a bass sax be a contrabass? This looks like the eppelsheim contra - which has the proper bore size to be a true contrabass saxophone, unlike the tubax which can be argued is a type of single reed sarrusophone.
There were only two subcontrabass saxophones built and neither played. They were both for show. Someone did however build an extremely large saxophone-like instrument that could not play a full scale and did need more than one person to blow into it.
thats like saying if you can play one instrument u can play them all, i play tenor bari and contrabass and i still cant get a good sound on alto, and yes i am a excellent player, its just the positioning of the mouth, clearly you only play one sax and a crappy band teacher told u that, the fingerings are the same, dont mean you can play it good...
aren't there only like 7 in the world

nice playing on the eppelsheim contrabass sax

Try going from sopranissimo sax to subcontrabass sax... Yes, the contrabass IS NOT the biggest. The sopranissimo and subcontra are 4 octaves apart!
Yamahaaltoplayer 3 years ago
the highest is the soprillo (piccolo)...its not called sopranissimo...check out eppelsheim's stuff
SilentAtDark 3 years ago
Soprillo is the brand/model name. Piccolo and sopranissimo are the saxophone size/type/voice. And yes, they are only made by Eppelsheim.
Yamahaaltoplayer 3 years ago
it has two names... soprillo is just more common... and A LOT easier to say lol
skoolboi109 2 years ago
yeah, the contrabass is the biggest. the tubax, the only "saxophone" to go lower, isn't technically a sax
tjrieves 3 years ago
Btw, I never played these saxes before, just the alto. I'm just amazed by the extremes!=p

The bore size ratio is different, so in that sense it isn't a sax.. but everything else is.
It is a sudo-sax IMO :)

Contrabass saxes are proper saxophones, Tubaxes are pseudo-saxes.

If you want some real contrabass solos listen to "Canal Street Blues" ~ Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band on youtube. You'll find the solos at about 3:40

I thought sticking my whole hand in my tenor sax was an achievement, but damn, you could hide a body in there.
