Looked at 500/560 SEL's before I bought my Jag. The Merc undoubtedly has the better build quality but thats were it ends. No character, the old V8 sounds like somebody shaking a bag of spanners. Trim level on Jag far far higher quality of material, leather, wood , thick carpets and chrome and lovely driving position. See what turns more heads when you drive both. I agree about todays Jags, but no worse than the cheap shit Merc are knocking out. Both cars were a proper standard back in 80's

They're not so classy when they're on the back of a tow truck. Had both an '86 560SEL and an '86 Vanden Plas. Both always garaged. Sold the Jag in 03. By that point it had rust bubbles at the base of the front A pillar (doesn't snow here + always garaged, remember) and it had been in the shop more times than I can to count. The Merc ran like a top. The Jag was a nicer looking car, both inside and out, and more involving to drive, but the MB was superior in engineering and build quality.
Perfect , we agree. The looks and driving experience are from Coventry, the build quality from Stuttgart. Don't know on the reliabilty though, lots of S-class Mercs advertised with running / starting problems, but the engines themselves are bullet - proof I believe. The straight 6 cylinder out of the newer XJ40 Jags (86-94) is robust too. Loads of them with 200k+ miles on and still going strong, thats of course if the wheel arches, sills and floor pans haven't rotted thro!!
Oh, the Jag I6 always was an excellent engine. it weighed more than a small seafaring vessel (say, the QE2) but it was a durable, reliable, robust engine. The Jag's downfall was the electrical system and the bodywork.
MBs of this era-like most other old, expensive cars-often suffer from neglect. They're expensive to maintain and they don't take kindly to deferred maintenance. The Jags are the same way. Care for them and either one is an excellent car. Abuse them and they become nightmares.
Can't agree more. The late 80's early 90's mercs are the last of the real mercedeses... Excellent build quality. I'm a proud owner of a 1986 W126 420SE. Even after 23 years it still feels better than any ordinary new car... Easy to maintain to, but not cheap.. orginal parts can set you back quite a bit. Luckily though, under normal driving they are very rugged!

um mercedes does't always make great cars, when it merged with chrysler they made some pretty crappy cars.
but the W123, W126 and all mercs from that era are so well made, the real mercedes.
