In Loving Memory of my BEST friend all thru my high school years.(COSTA MESA HIGH SCHOOL)..DOUGLAS ALAN SMITH 1964-2010 - I WILL CARRY YOUR SMILE AND FRIENDSHIP WITH ME ALLWAYS *WEEZER*
Shouldn't it be "I wish I *were* a Wild West Hero"? Or does the possession of a curly perm entitle one to disregard the correct use of the subjunctive?
A great song that captured the faux-romantic notion of living in the Old West of the USA... from Brits... even more perfect...A song from my childhood ... and my adulthood... and though I'm an American, I don't buy into the 'fantasy'..

must be something good in the black country water to produce so many great musicians,10cc elo, etc.was saddened to hear of bass player kelly groucut's death last year.
I don't think anyone who appreciates this wonderful music can be described as "un-cool" This track still inspires 30 odd year's later and that is the real test of time, like all great music regardless of genre.
Some say i'm too young to listen to this kind of music. I tell them they must be misunderstood. Anybody that dosent enjoy this music has been corrupted by modern crap.
Fantastic - takes me back to '78. I loved this video back then - was often played on tv in the UK. I loved this band back then - none of my mates did, so I was considered a bit "un-cool" ! still love 'em now. Good music transcends all genres.
Memories.... "Mr Blue Sky" was number 1 when I joined the army so has always stuck in memory (showing age). I think there was some niggle about at one time regarding how much Beatle sounding they were but for me they were always a class act IMHO
Just travelled Route 66 with my best mate Mally and took a fistful of CDs for the trip but the ELO
greatest hits was by far the most played .
We went to York Grand Opera House to see ELO2 a few months before the unfortunate death of Kelly and they were awesome, it's one of life's great shames that the bitterness and wrangling cannot be resolved.
But at least we have the music and the memories - Paul Bowden (Isle of Man)
Jeff Lynne & ELO were the mid/late 1970s music wise for me. I wore out 3 copies of "Out of the Blue" & 2 copies of "A new world record" I have both albums on MP3 for Eternity now, but love the coverwork on their Albums. I listen to these tracks and feel 17 again. Mr Blue Sky is 30 years old and is loved by young and old alike. timeless!
I liked all this stuff in the 70's, then forgot about it for a quick 30 years only to re-find it lately.....I'm glad I did......it's not only nostalgia, it's f.....g good.!
He's got my vote! I used to turn on that revolving rainbow colored light, turn out the over head light plug in my headphones and kick back in my beanbag and listen to the WHOLE Out Of The Blue album! I was in HEAVEN!!!
They should've played this song along with the old Marlboro "cowboy" ads!! I know this song and the image of the Marlboro cowboy got me into smoking Marlboros. They were all what I thought America was back then. But then, I was 17 and fresh from England.
@Scott06096 I second that mate when you are young and think you know music something like this comes along you look amazed and your old man just stays quiet with a smile
You know, the travellin wilburys were made up of giants of the music world, and this man absolutely deserves to be among them. This song takes me back to earlier days, [80's], of my brother, who always had ELO playing in his old mk1 escort van! When music brings a tear to your eye, you know it's good!
@azzbo51 As (Clint) would say, happy to 'make your day..' Have to go - the Dark Lord of the Sith is approaching..(wife).. since the kids left home it's apparently my job to wash the Millennium Falcon.... bugger! (;
Loved this song back in the day - this song and Clint (of course) inspired me to try this 'Wild West Hero' lark... well.. horse was nuts, gun kept jamming, heat and flies, and never ending baked beans.. so I thought: 'now what?! Enter... Hans Solo. Off with the cowboy hat and on with the space suit... I became a spaceman bounty hunter instead. Keeps the wife happy.... (:
Wild West Hero is a masterpiece. I love the intro, the guitar solos, the harmonies, the lyrics, 2:42, and the background noise. It's a travesty that Jeff Lynne is not already in the songwriters hall of fame -- the man is a musical genius.
Wild West Hero is an absolute masterpiece. The saloon-sounding intro, the guitar solos, the lyrics, the incredible harmonies, the vocals-only section at 2:42 and the subtle wind sounds... Yet another obvious reason to put Jeff Lynne in the songwriter hall of fame.
Yes, this is really an incredible song - I've never seen this video before, but known the song for so long.. Goosebumps for me, as well, kiskte :) They truly are a stellar and underated group, so many original good songs. Unbelievable creativity. Wonderful song. When i listen to this song i can't help but think of John Marston from the "Red Dead Redemption" video game. Fantastic song ELO of of the true classic's of music
ELO is something truly unique, their sound is so authentic and distinctive yet every song is so refreshing. They bring a fresh piece of meat to the table every time and is just ready to sizzle.
Magnificent! I wish I was a wild west hero too but I'm hopeless with ropes and I'd end up lassoing myself while I was riding a horse at 227mph. Not much good at riding horses either. Hmmm, think I'll knock this foolish cowboy notion on the head once and for all. Although I just blew the head off a Coyote with a revolver! I'm back!! Excellent song ELO chaps, I doth my cap...I mean my cowboy hat!
This reminds me of a lost love of mine who chose heroin above eveything else - he used to love this song...I hope tha he is a Wild West Hero somewhere in his befuddled mind...all my love where ever you are Wayne.. Susan x
god i loved this song when i was young. its got an underlying theme to it thats about being young, full of hope and having dreams. and dressing up as cowboys????????? lol
This is my favourite ELO song! And I'm lucky to have heard it at all, as I could've bought a different compilation that didn't have it! To think I may never have otherwise heard this song... I shudder at the thought!
That was the Golden Age of music and it died mid-Eighties. I followed ELO from the early Roy Wood days, right up to world domination. Still think Out of The Blue is a triumph and I even love the later Olivia Newton-John collaboration. Great songs never die.
I agree too Ruby, proud to be a fan in spite of being slagged of by my mates for admitting this yesterday. They told me I had lost my street cred. Why they are seen as so uncool I just don't know. The lyrics and harmony are wonderful, poignant and always touch your heart strings. They bring back so many memories of my childhood. No manufactured pop sound or trashy tv prog can ever reach the ELO bar.
I came into ELO way too late (just recently turned 31), and being an American, made explaining just who (and how great) ELO is/was very difficult. This was, and always will be a great song. Their quality of music is inspirational, to say the least.
Thanks again Wendy. Glad to be amongst other ELO fans. Their music is timeless and one can only hope with todays stuff they are trying to pass off as music, ELO's music will come back BIG and LOUDER and squash out the trash of todays noise.
Long live this glorious music in our hearts and souls forever.
My gosh, I love this song. Jeff Lynne is in my opinion still THEE GREATEST TRUE ARTIST in its purest form. Discovering his earlier work with Idle Race has been a delight to find and coming across these great songs I've forgotten about.
Induct him into The Rock-n-Roll Hall Of Fame already! Pure brilliance!
Thanks wbrax2. I speak from the heart when it comes to such great talent. I love many other artist, but he stands out from the rest. His brilliance has led me to rediscover ELO and appreciate them more so now that I'm older. Can't argue with true talent.
Good comment Ruby - and I wholeheartedly agree with every word.
I`ve loved ELO for many years. I was 12 when I bought my first record of theirs....Living Thing. It`s still one of my fave songs. ELO made my teen years superb, and I always look back fondly over the yeaqrs whenever I hear a song of theirs.
ELO were groundbreaking - even back in the 1970`s. I just don`t understand why they haven`t been inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. They soooo deserve t be there.
Thanks again wbrax2. I could gush over why they are so wonderful, but you being a fan, you already know why.
I wish I would have been introduced or even born earlier than 1971 to witness the entire beginnings of ELO right up till the end. Miss that boat I'm afraid, but will never stop now listening to them. Jeff Lynne's talent is endless and just love his and ELO's music now.
As for R&RHF, he belongs there, but doubtful he'll ever get in. He'll still be thee best to me!
Gush away Ruby, you`re among many fans here who will agree with you. I feel the same way, but you put it across way better than I could,
Every song has a special meaning for me. When I hear 'Telephone Line' and 'Rockaria' I go back in time to when I was in school and singing along to them during the school breaks.
When I hear 'Ticket To The Moon' or 'Don`t Walk Away' it takes me back to when I had my first legal drink in a pub and played it endlessly on the juke box.
I idolised Jeff Lynne in those days of my youth...thats before I knew what a Brummie was!!! Loved the group and whatever anyone says ..... if you were around then they were a breath of brilliance...thanks lads for making my teens.
Lynne was one of the most original song writers ever. Innovative. ELO sounded like no one else. You know its them when ever you hear one of their songs
I loved the animation of the horse rearing up and it was seeing this video that made Wild West Hero my favourite ELO track ever. It expresses some good values.
I only ever saw this once on tv at the time, in the very first edition of The Kenny Everett Video Programme in 1978. I don't think it was ever shown on TOTP, probably because Kenny had got it first and he was by then out of favour with the BBC, so they went into a sulk.
It DID get shown on TOTP because I remember this getting show on UKGold when they repeated TOTP from the 70's and 80's, but the video was heavily cut to fit the broadcast time slot omitting the intro and ending.
It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. Now more than ever, British voters need to understand that they are being colonised. Unless they act decisively to halt this mass immigration wave, Britain and its thousands of years of culture, history and tradition will be submerged under the immigration invasion.
I remember seeing this on Granada TV between two programmes in the 70's;they would sometimes pop on a music video to fill the time if things sometimes ran a little short just to fill the gap!
What a song that has every dimension needed for a 32 year memory, ballads, harmonies, viloins, pianos, drums (etc) not like the shit being played in the charts now. JL to release new material end of the year, can't wait.
As a young kid I loved playing the cowboy & indians role playing, I would listen to this at night and I really wanted to be a wild west hero when I grew up. First time in years since I heard it, knew all the words and what a great blast from the past!!!
2:42 ..... Love it... just melts me

You summed him up perfectly. I couldn`t agree more.

Thanks wbrax2. I speak from the heart when it comes to such great talent. I love many other artist, but he stands out from the rest. His brilliance has led me to rediscover ELO and appreciate them more so now that I'm older. Can't argue with true talent.
Many blessings,

Good comment Ruby - and I wholeheartedly agree with every word.
I`ve loved ELO for many years. I was 12 when I bought my first record of theirs....Living Thing. It`s still one of my fave songs. ELO made my teen years superb, and I always look back fondly over the yeaqrs whenever I hear a song of theirs.
ELO were groundbreaking - even back in the 1970`s. I just don`t understand why they haven`t been inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. They soooo deserve t be there.
wbrax2 2 years ago
Thanks again wbrax2. I could gush over why they are so wonderful, but you being a fan, you already know why.
I wish I would have been introduced or even born earlier than 1971 to witness the entire beginnings of ELO right up till the end. Miss that boat I'm afraid, but will never stop now listening to them. Jeff Lynne's talent is endless and just love his and ELO's music now.
As for R&RHF, he belongs there, but doubtful he'll ever get in. He'll still be thee best to me!
Many blessings,
Mel

Gush away Ruby, you`re among many fans here who will agree with you. I feel the same way, but you put it across way better than I could,
Every song has a special meaning for me. When I hear 'Telephone Line' and 'Rockaria' I go back in time to when I was in school and singing along to them during the school breaks.
When I hear 'Ticket To The Moon' or 'Don`t Walk Away' it takes me back to when I had my first legal drink in a pub and played it endlessly on the juke box.

This song really is beautiful. 'The folks would come to me..they'd say we need you here...I'd stay there for the night...'
Wonderful!:)

Sootaroot 2 years ago
It DID get shown on TOTP because I remember this getting show on UKGold when they repeated TOTP from the 70's and 80's, but the video was heavily cut to fit the broadcast time slot omitting the intro and ending.

Thanks! I am amazed that I missed it because TOTP was essential viewing in those days.

The video is pure genius combining cartoon animation and the live band playing!

Good to hear it in stereo from 3sat off the ASTRA satellite!
