Gian Maria Volontè was one of our best actor, during the filming he was quite ashamed about the movie (he was a well known theatre actor and played most in political film, like "La Classe Operai Va In Paradiso") and told his friends he was glad that the makeup would disguised him...if you find it you should watch "Indagine Su Un Cittadino Al Di Sopra Di Ogni Sospetto"
Gian was great as Ramone!! It's amazing to think he did not take the role seriously. Could have fooled me. He was the best western villain ever!! He's even a likeable badass. The man who overdubs his voice in English can be heard in other, less famous westerns. Overdubbing for other Italian actors.
Fantastic masterpiece. Our modern so-called "heroes" look like crap compared with young Clint Eastwood. Very nice classic. Gian Maria Volonté was no less impressive. Too bad they do not make films like this one anymore. If I have no mistake "A Fistfull of Dollars" was the first Spaghetti Western and became real classic
@Soundtrackcollector Was that his own voice in the two films. The same voice was used as the Captain or whatever he was in the huge battle scene in the The Good The Bad The Ugly.
@StanBennet I don't believe that was his real voice - I have other movies of his made where he spoke in Italian -they were subtitled - and he didn't sound anything like Ramon. I assume that those movies were not dubbed since he was Italian. But that's a good observation about the Captain in TGTB&TU - I've watched that movie 100 times and never made the connection. Now I'll have to watch it again and pay better attention
@yooperlooper concerning the voice over actor "he was also Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) in OUATITW. He's got a very memorable voice, however despite many attempts at searching we've not been able to track down who he is." thanks for the interest.
@Soundtrackcollector No kidding - I just got that movie and am anxious to watch it. I've never been able to picture Henry Fonda as a villian so I was never that interested in it, But after seeing some of the clips on YouTube and reading the reviews I decided to visit Amazon and pick up a copy. I'll watch (listen) for Morton. thanks!!
@ptthunder Gian Maria Volontè was an outspoken Communist. I don't think he would've been very accepted in the USA. But he was indeed a wonderful actor.
Perhaps Mr. Volonte didn't consider the the parts as serious material, he did however give his best in these two films. The realism that he imparts is paramount; a finely honed craft. I wonder, did he direct any films during his career?
not only Gian but look at Klaus Kinski , give credit to Sergio Leone for finding these actors .. A master at finding actors that not only play the part but in real life they were as they were on screen .
Some notable good bad guys like Thomas Milan and Franco Nero great actors !.
It's funny how things happen. All these fantastic actors they always were behind the typical western actors like John Wayne..etc but one day Leone came and he made them super stars. I love them. Eastwood, Wallach, Van Cleef, Nero, Brynner, Palance... They are the reason I watch Western.. and of course the music.
Gian Maria Volante is my favorite 'bad guy' and along with 'oddball' , 'Killgour' , and Clide Barrow make up a good part of my own persona. except that I generaly smell better,
Hard to believe Volonte didn't take these roles seriously, especially of El Indio - he played a very complex, mentally unstable madman with perfection - that takes talent and depth. Nice video and on my favorites. Thanks
thanks my man, this really made my day at work. ive been longing for this part of the soundtrack for over 7 years now, and happened across your vid and the realisation there's finally an extended version been released. ramón rojo rocks :-)
"Volonte took the roles as the way to make cash in between more serious, dramatic productions. He instead became one of the most fearsome bad guys in Western lore".
Short and to the point tribute to one of Italy's greatest actors. Gian Maria can pull off intensity and menace without ever succumbing into caricature. Love the freeze at 0:19! Great work. Fiver!
How about a soundtrack "For a few dollars more"?

Excellent compilation. Ramon was always one of my favorite tortured villains.

He had an interesting rifle technique--he'd shoot of a couple rounds from the hip, then he shot a few from the shoulder.
