Zhao in my opinion has the most deceptive shots in badminton. Probably the greatest player I have ever seen. When he jump smash, no one, not even us who have the luxury of television replay can know where he wanted to place his shots. The current crop, Lin Dan and Lee Chong Weh would not match his stroke play.
His footwork using crab style minimise injury. Above the rest on renown player his elbow always higher than shoulder each shot taken during smash, lob and drop shot. Very calm payer as of his good anticipation of opponent.
Morten really was that good; you only have to consider the fact that apart from a few others of note before nobody until Zhao had really combined such speed and deception into a deadly package plus it helped being left handed. Morten had to really think on his feet to even come close its pity they changed the scoring system because players like Morten could out think the Asians and also it helps if you have unbelievable stamina and footwork to die for.
Oddly enough, top Chinese players today do not play like Zhao. Lee Chopng Wei (mas) style resembles Zhao but lack the other packages of speed and power.
Zhao's skills is amazing. If in his prime. he could still beat some top players today. He had a physical condition in his lungs that made him lose stamina fast and being an artist he has the artist mood when things go wrong. That's why he did not stand as great as Yang Yang who was more complete. Zhao has his nemesis, particularly Foo Kok Keong(mas) who would return everything Zhao threw at him. Zhao lost to FKK 3 times with no reply.
Zhao won this All England title at 19/20 years of age. And darn it, ppl keep saying the game is now faster. Thats BS bcoz does that mean the shuttle are faster now? So the players has to be fitter? Grow up. Give me Zhao anytime. There were so many great players during Zhao's time. Liem, Frost, Yang etc. But I just see Lin Dan in his ownland. The rest are not even close to heroes of yesteryears.
Yeah, Lin Dan is much better than many on the rest
Lee Chong Wei, Chen Jin, Peter Gade, Soni Koncuro, Taufik and so on, are very talentful players. They just look weak compared to lin dan who is the best badminton player of all time, no doubt.
@reubeny1 absolutely. The artistry of Zhao was never matched even today. Frost had the best defense. Yang Yang was the steady player. Liem Swee King had the most powerful forehand smash. And then there was Misbun Sidek of Malaysia who also had some good years.
Don't forget Zhao actually and eventually became world champ in 1991 (or thereabouts). He's also won the All England twice, the Grand Prix Finals, and the World Cup. That makes him one of the world's greats, IMO.
I remember I saw him smiled when he lost some shots during games. You dont see that in players nowadays - all the grim faces. I suspect his lack of consistency is due to his tendency to enjoy his badminton. Still to me, he is a badminton great.
all i can say is tha zhao was a complete package, sadly he didnt go the distance. but seeing his personality and skills on court when he was in teh zone esp in this 1985 final was so beautiful to watch. i totally enjoyted this game and still rate it one of the best. the camera angle was superb as it made viewers see the players game well and didnt make the court short as usual.
observe carefully his shots and you will realize that zhao's game is unmatchable even till today where his repertoire of shots eg his speed, powerful attacking game, defensive shots, risky flat drives, deceptive wrist work, net shots and varied strategy is way above any player who's played the modern game of badminton. great win despite so many unforced errors. my opinion is that zhao plays the badminton game most beautifully.
I think if you take the techniques separately, Chen Hong's ability in executing the proper techniques are comparable to those of Zhao's in terms of competence and smoothness. However, if you put it all together- I'm talking about the utilization and variation of shots, in addition to mind games- I would personally classify Zhao in a league of his own, well and above anyone else.
do u think that Lin Dan might be able to exhaust him with clears, and come in with the sting? Or would zhao still be finding those angles when hes tired?
Also, was Zhao better than Taufik at his best? Im a huge Taufik fan, but this man has really caught my attention from youtube clips
Can someone tell me how fit Zhao was? ive heard he was lazy and got out of shape sometimes.
Unfortunately most prodigies (exception to tiger woods) have their flaws. But in the zone, they are the best in the game, at least that's how I saw Zhao. Taufik & Lin Dan are good but I don't see their skills and execution of shots comparable to Zhao esp in 1985 AE final (Frost got most points from Zhao's unforced error from extremely difficult repertoire of shots). It was breathtaking badminton from Zhao. Sadly he hadn't the consistency and staying power to be recognised as an all time great.
thanks man. yes i think its sad wen that happens, his game here is so good and i didnt know who he was last year. its amazing how people with this must talent will never be recognised by so many badminton fans
@ycken69 yea he plays it probably most beautifully and was ahead of his opponents at that time but take the matches between lin dan and lc they are more perfect maybe not more beautifully but thay are more perfect in a way that they have to play long rallies to find they opponent flaw because they are too fit and too perfect maybe if zhao had been trained in the modern era he would be as perfect as those two but he would lose if he played against one of those two presently
@ycken69 ya Zhao has a beautiful style, and thoughtful stategic shots, always in control of the rally and dictating the pace of the match. I don't know how he'll do in today's 21pt format but back in those days the power and speed wasn't what it is today. He's still one of my favorite players though.
The other one is Morten Frost from Denmark. He won the All England Single Championships 4 times and he spent twelve years in the top three of the world rankings.

フロストの直線的なフットワーク。骨盤をうまく利用したフットワークが,今のバドミントンの形に近い。サイドの速い動きに対応できる下半身の動きだ

Zhao's charm is that he genuinely enjoyed his game, not easy for a first time player in an international championship game.
