  • In the land of the blind!

  • To be honest as a very experienced Karate fighter, Andre Bertel shouldn't be given a point at all because he directly punched his opponent on his face without control. It was a very cheap shot, In the sport of Shotokan Karate it is all about getting points from your opponent without hurting the other person and you can control your speed and technique. I know Phil personally, we used to train together in the 90s. Well mr Bertel, it was a good idea to get retired.

  • good technique

  • Wonderful display for both technique and sportsmanship!! I wish more people in my Karate system were like these guys, a true display of Karateka conduct

  • hi Andre , are you able to tell me if this is the guy I think it is ?

I think i met Phillip in Okinawa at the 07 JKS W/Champs , he and i both got knocked out in the quarter finals at the event ( on opposite sides of the draw ), he was living in China teaching English ( if I remember correctly ? )

Have I got the right guy ?

    regards

    David

  • @shingitai333

Yes, that's correct! Phil and his wife Sachi live and teach English and karate in Shanghai. I think he is still there!

    Andre

  • you all need to relax. Its a contact sport, this guy went down far too easy. Nuff said

  • The Ref is dressed like a rockstar lol! Good waza tho

  • good sportsmanship

  • Gd shot!

  • wow

    wonderful

  • It's not a tag match. The rules state that while a strike must be controlled (not causing injury) it must also be a solid, palpable strike to score.

  • If he hadn't controlled that punch it would have been a knockout instead of a knockdown. People who say "lack of control" here are probably the ones who cry after getting hit, hoping for a hansoku. Can't you take a hit? Are you doing Karate or ballet? Grow some balls.

  • I was misjudgment in distance. Moving around like that, I can see where you could wind up hitting some one.

It is not like they were meeting head on where distance is easier to judge. Also, you can see it was not on purpose.

Telling him to join K-1 is just bullshit. Grow up or stop making self promoting posts.

  • No control, no technique, no respect to the oponent

  • It was a misjudgement as Phil instinctively grabbed my dogi, I turned and his pull changed my ma'ai/distance. I simply reacted to the grab as after all, I'm a karateka. Very unfortunate, but certainly not intentional, and IT WAS VERY CONTROLLED. If not, well he wouldn't have had drinks with me after the tournament (= he had no injury)... You can visually see the punch is pulled (slowed down in mid-flight and not extended). If you think what is in this video is too hard, you should try ballet.

  • you pulled a beautiful tsuki that should be the true essence of karate, peace man

  • nice punch..and trying ballet??..man i would throgh my sef from 10 metters into a water 10times and pay 100$..but trying ballet..that really hard..im training shotokan karate too..(yellow belt) ..how many Dans in black belt?

  • @andrebertel to me, the tsuki is controlled. it's normal situation in shiai. great video. thanks for sharing master. best regards.

  • Man, that was a good punch

  • hahaha go sensei

  • Andre, please post more of yourself in action. I see I have a lot to learn from people as proficient as you.

  • It was great to see live, nice that it comes across well on video too ^_^

  • Yup he definatly would have been waking up a little fuzzy if that punch had finished.
