What I don't get was if this was so easy for Buu to absorb Gohan, Gotenks, and Piccolo, why he never absorbed Goku and Vegita? To this day I have no idea, but then again, I doubt the makes of DBZ would want the main character to die from something like that.

The original script was to make Gohan a hero and just to have Goku come back, but as previously stated he couldn't do it without changing what made Gohan Gohan. So he rewrote Buu saga so that it was a foe that no one could defeat alone and created a sense of near hoplessness.

The only reason The Z fighters had a chance against Buutenks and Buuhan was because absorbing people made Buu less of a demon and more mortal. It took everyone to beat Buu. So the Buu saga was a fantastic end to DBZ.
Mystic Gohan is just a fan term, it's actually Ultimate Gohan, because the old Kai awakened his hidden energy, that's all he did, just like Guru in the Namek Saga.
