@C4R13YS4UR nice story about your dad singing this to you, my dad used to sing the streets of laredo to me, not a woody guthrie song but your story reminded my of my dad, thanks for sharing that
Woody and the Almanacs. Thanks for explaining those terms, which are much speculated over, errntknght1. But what of 'fiery' and 'snuffy'? Sounds like the characters of a couple of horses to me.
I remember this song from my childhood... a book of 'cowboy' songs...what a surprise to find it was written by Woody Guthrie. He has the terminology right - a 'dan' being a burro or a mule carrying supplies and throwing a houlihan is rather tricky method of throwing a lasso loop over the head of a fleeing horse.
Great! Linda Rondstat did a version of this.. Was glad to find Woody HERE! Daughter went wrong.. prob not allowed in college..back then. Oh what a yarn! Thanks!
thank you for this. very nice. i am making my own CD of songs and want to do another of public domain songs. Thanks for posting this one done by the talented Woody Guthrie.
The old commie does a good job on my Grandads favorite.

The "Houlihan" is a right handed side throw over the head of a steer running from yore left to the right.

Fiery and snuffy refers to attitudes some cows get. Snuffy ones are just looking for a fight.
