There's something really primal about Nick Cave , especially live... I remember seeing him in Sydney, he played the original version of Mercy Seat & when he leant over the crowd & sang, they began to move backwards.. It is the only show I have ever been to where a crowd surge was actually moving away from the band..
I love the Cave/Ellis tracks. They really show how beautifully the Bad Seeds, et. al., have matured and expanded as genuine artists and musicians. Something tells me there's more greatness in the future, as well as some great stuff locked in a few vaults here and there. I can't wait. :D
@ marciniko OH SNIGGITY SNAP SON YOU GOT SONNED, SON, BOW DOWN, THIS AINT NO STINKIN BUKOWSKI POEM ITS THE DARK PRINCE OF DEBAUCHERY NICHOLAS EDWARD CAVE. THOUGH WITH YOUR TENUOUS GRASP OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ("WRITED"? SERIOUSLY? YOU'RE GONNA COMMENT ON WRIIITING AND LAAANGUAGE WHEN YOU'RE TALM LIKK DAT? FO SHAME. BACK OFF, DUNNY. BUKOWSKI WAS KINDA A HACK. you gotta give it to him, he pulled some women in his time, but Nicholas Cave is a god among men, dunn, so fall back, haters to the left
@Captbigbeard: This is but one of many versions Cave made of this song. You can find alone half a dozen _acoustic_live_versions_ of it on youtube. (And the one on the album was more like a freight train coming at you.) Don't get me wrong, Cash did a great cover of this and it has well earned its prominent place among my collection of notable covers. But saying that Cash's one version is better than Cave's many dozens is like comparing one animal to all plants and saying the animal is better.
@hsch68 So pretty much your forcing your opinion on me, eh? I've owned a Venus fly-trap (poor sucker died fast), seen a redwood up close in cali, and I've been high outta my mind and was mind-fucked by the beauty of a simple sunflower...
and still I think a T-rex is 10X fuckin cooler.
Some people like different things. I like Cash's version is better. I like his voice far more.
@marciniko Sorry, but Nick cave wrote this in 1988. Johnny Cash covered it in 2000. Have a look at the Wiki entry for "The Mercy Seat (Song)".
The Charles Bukowski reference is because someone did a Bukowski slideshow and used Cash's version of the song as background and posted it on Youtube. Title "Charles Bukowski - Music by Johnny Cash (Mercy Seat)".
This is misleading, but, you are right, he is an excellent writer - he just didn't write this.
@theoriginalmilo How anyone could think Buk wrote this is beyond me. I love Bukowski but he's never in his life written anything even remotely like this whereas it's typical, thematically, of Cave's entire oeuvre.
I saw Nick Cave perform in Liverpool, years ago without the Bad Seeds. He had Warren Ellis, a drummer and a girl on bass. I remember that gig being one of the most sublime experiences ever.
They played this version of Mercy Seat - absolutely haunting! When it came to the chorus, the hairs on the back of the neck truly stood on end. Papa Won't Leave You Henry was done in a similar style and that was absolutely heart-rending. Never been so emotionally affected at a gig before.

@tomowen5: We probably saw him on the same tour in Grieg Hallen, Bergen, Norway. When Nick sat smoking at his piano some guy in the backe yelled "Loom of the land"! Nick sat there thinking for some seconds and answered "That's a good one", and then they played it. Awesome!!!
Their normal live-version of the song with it´s bombastic orchestration is great, but this one is the best i´ve ever heared. More the way Cave and Ellis do thier soundtrack music.
I have a bootleg recording that is exactly this version, except more applause can heard. If not the same performance, the tour is the same. The concert is titled St.Petersburg, 2004-09-21.
The acoustic version of this song form b-sides and rarities, which features spare piano and intricate harmonies, is also amazing.
I love this song so much...

Chilling and somber. Definitely the best songwriter of my generation. Sadly when I say Nick Cave ...they usually say Nick WHO ???

I think this version just knocked the B-Sides and Rarities version from the number 1 spot on my favourites list.

The last few moments of this one are much definitive of Cave's power.
