@rozekd12 The train has no pilot. Remember its on fire (Obviously), but its that the train is still going, is cause its still on full gear, the pilot probably made it full gear to try and outrun the Tripods, but just died in the process, thus leaving a out of control train going. If its still on fire, probably it just got attacked some time ago. It will eventually derail from the speed its going, crash into something and stop, or just simply run out of gas and slow to a stop.

@highfive96 well diesels have Alerters which you have to hit ever 5 or 10 seconds but the stupid thing is you can turn them off there is literally a off switch on the alerters

@bombomos Wuh ? The bodies got powderised as you know, the clothes were unharmed and just sort of floated about, but the cars, trucks and bridges all got hosed. Remember that car in the first alien attack scene ? So maybe a certain water content is the catalyst for deconstruction as opposed to propulsion.

I love this scene. It makes you wonder what was the train's departing station? How far has it travelled? How long has it been burning? Did the train depart with it's passengers and crew from a city under attack? or did the train round a bend right in front of a tripod? What makes the scene so powerfull is these questions are never answered. It is 27 seconds from the barriers being lowered to being raised. 27 seconds of fine cinematic storytelling.

You'd have to assume the fire was from the inside, as the flames are moving outward. In some scenes, you'll notice that it looks like the inside of the train is on fire.

Okay, these people are effing stupid. I'm not exactly a survival genius. However, I can figure out that aliens wanting to destroy human race + massive crowds of people = bad effing idea. Not only that but they're playing music loudly to alert EVERYTHING in a radius of miles of their presence. All of these people might have survived if they had laid low in tents in the woods, which would have been low on the Tripods' priority list in terms of killing as many as possible.

i have read that: this train scene represents train used by Nazis during WW2 to take jews to death camp. I know that in every Spielberg's movie, there is a scene that recalls the hollocost.

Yes, the most frightening scene in this movie. Until this moment, everybody feels we are being chased by the tripods... it is here when we think "This is actually going far beyond mere chasing... this is all-out war and the enemy is everywhere..." simple as that... ruthless, cold hunting of humans...

Keep in mind, aliens are wierd dudes, and they burn stuff up for reasons we do not comprehend. This clip follows the dialog: "why is the power on here?" answered by "nothing bad has happened here." so the burning train is sort of a winking, "oh, really?"

Another Intresting fact is that if you look closely, you can tell that the Locomotive is a P32AC-DM owned by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad

(MNCR owned by the MTA)

This also Indicate that this scene was either shot on Metro North's Hudson or Harlem Lines.

If you notice most of the vehicles are outa mans control and most of the systems are probably fried. You'll notice humvees are unmanned like that and many others so i'd say that the system is fried enough to keep going.
