a disguised reference to the holocaust? could well be. in fact, it has to be
death train to auschwitz
the tripod war machines signify the nazis, scooping up the humans (jews) and storing them to be experimented on or just wiped out. its ostensibly a monster movie and what were the nazis...? monsters
@rozekd12 The train has no pilot. Remember its on fire (Obviously), but its that the train is still going, is cause its still on full gear, the pilot probably made it full gear to try and outrun the Tripods, but just died in the process, thus leaving a out of control train going. If its still on fire, probably it just got attacked some time ago. It will eventually derail from the speed its going, crash into something and stop, or just simply run out of gas and slow to a stop.
@highfive96 well diesels have Alerters which you have to hit ever 5 or 10 seconds but the stupid thing is you can turn them off there is literally a off switch on the alerters
@KingLizard107 It's still moving because trains take FOREVER to stop moving. Like, I think they stop moving after they've traveled about a mile with their engines or whatever off.
why is the train still moving at a 45mph speed while on fire?? isn't there there suppose to be a operater in the train?? i know its just a movie but wtf???
I gotta say these ppl were friggin idiots. Yes, I'm not a genius. Yeah, I'd probs die in some horrible way in an alien invasion. BUT I know better than to get in a huge crowd of people with loud music blaring and lights flashing everywhere. Srsly, wth were they thinking?
The Aliens must have lit that train up for lols because their primary weapon was like a magic hose that powderised flesh and bone and pushed all mineral based objects out of its path.
@bombomos Wuh ? The bodies got powderised as you know, the clothes were unharmed and just sort of floated about, but the cars, trucks and bridges all got hosed. Remember that car in the first alien attack scene ? So maybe a certain water content is the catalyst for deconstruction as opposed to propulsion.
Trains represent man's greatest achievements, technologies and basically, our entire earthly empire. This scene scares us to the bone because we know that.
I love this scene. It makes you wonder what was the train's departing station? How far has it travelled? How long has it been burning? Did the train depart with it's passengers and crew from a city under attack? or did the train round a bend right in front of a tripod? What makes the scene so powerfull is these questions are never answered. It is 27 seconds from the barriers being lowered to being raised. 27 seconds of fine cinematic storytelling.
No, think of when your in a car and your moving, you don't feel like you're outside of the car; the wind isn't affecting you. Same general principle applies.
You'd have to assume the fire was from the inside, as the flames are moving outward. In some scenes, you'll notice that it looks like the inside of the train is on fire.
Okay, these people are effing stupid. I'm not exactly a survival genius. However, I can figure out that aliens wanting to destroy human race + massive crowds of people = bad effing idea. Not only that but they're playing music loudly to alert EVERYTHING in a radius of miles of their presence. All of these people might have survived if they had laid low in tents in the woods, which would have been low on the Tripods' priority list in terms of killing as many as possible.
@Wellworm Don't blame the people. Blame the directors. If the directors have not ordered them to act like stupid human beings, we would hardly be seeing anyone dying.
i have read that: this train scene represents train used by Nazis during WW2 to take jews to death camp. I know that in every Spielberg's movie, there is a scene that recalls the hollocost.
Yes, the most frightening scene in this movie. Until this moment, everybody feels we are being chased by the tripods... it is here when we think "This is actually going far beyond mere chasing... this is all-out war and the enemy is everywhere..." simple as that... ruthless, cold hunting of humans...
This was a frightening scene. I remember reading about something similar, and I shuddered at the thought. Then actually seeing it disturbed me even more. The director is a genius
Keep in mind, aliens are wierd dudes, and they burn stuff up for reasons we do not comprehend. This clip follows the dialog: "why is the power on here?" answered by "nothing bad has happened here." so the burning train is sort of a winking, "oh, really?"
haha it is scary but if you think about it, it is stupid. The train would have either exploded or derailed at high speeds. Any why did the aliens just destroy the inside and not the whole train?
I heard they just wanted to destroy the life and keep the planet for themselves w/o destruction. Ironic of course because they blew up a whole frikken bridge...
@laytonj519 yea and it would have stopped after a minute because there is a button in the cab that the driver has to press to make sure the driver is still there.
If you notice most of the vehicles are outa mans control and most of the systems are probably fried. You'll notice humvees are unmanned like that and many others so i'd say that the system is fried enough to keep going.
I loved this scene. Absolutely terrifying.

Another Intresting fact is that if you look closely, you can tell that the Locomotive is a P32AC-DM owned by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad
(MNCR owned by the MTA)
This also Indicate that this scene was either shot on Metro North's Hudson or Harlem Lines.
CtTrainguy52 2 years ago
@CtTrainguy52 The town's on the wrong side of the Hudson. Only CSX has a line on the west side. The lights and stop arm are "real." The train is CGI.
+I always thought that the fire would rupture the brake line. Still a nightmarish scene regardless.
coyoteatquiznos 2 years ago
I guess so but the train still is a Metro North train Just superimposed on the other side of the hudson . lol
Yeah t the fire either rupture the Breakline or the tank would have exploded right?

There's a lot going wrong for that train to be moving like that. It's an effective motif regardless. Creeped me out the first time I saw it.
