We have 2 basic rifle platforms and a few different calibers that correspond with one or the other:

.223/5.56 Platform: .204 Ruger, .223 Remington, 5.56x45mm NATO, 6.8 SPC, 7.62x39mm and .30 Remington AR

.308 Platform: .300 SAUM (discontinued), .308 Winchester, .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, .338 Federal and 6.5 Creedmoor

The only difference is the pressure in the chamber, as yes the brass and the powder is slightly different for more stopping or armor piercing capabilities... but when you take a caliper to the actual round itself.... ITS THE SAME BULLET!

@Hopllyte the bullet may be the same but you shouldnt shoot a 223 in a 556. the bolt may not lock into the chamber and...bad things can happen. the shoulder dimensions on the case is different.

You call it an assault rifle because of its appearance. I can show you a Remington 30-06 "deer" rifle with a detachable magazine and you in all of your worldly wisdom would not classify this rifle as an assault rifle. In fact both guns are semi-auto and function in the exact same way. The .30-06 is actually more powerful cartridge though and more deadly. Its like putting a hood scoop on a bus and calling it a race car, they function the same but appear different.

What it's used for is irrelevant. The ownership of it is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. And incidently, it is a superb self defense weapon. I can choose any weapon I want for self defense. Note to everyone: Please do not refer to rifles as "assault rifle". Assault is a crime of violence against another person. Anything from a screwdriver to a fist can be an assault weapon. Everytime someone refers to their rifle as an "Assault Rifle" pisses me off because it only helps their ignorant cause. I hear the term used all of the time in the gun community and it needs to stop.
