@tack534 you are right about the number and disposition of the shuttles, however the prototype you mentioned is not called Pathfinder. It was called Enterprise, had a huge rollout ceremony in the 70's. It was used for glide tests from a 747. It is currently in the Udvar-Hazy Center in DC. Though it will go to a new home, as it is being replaced by one of the actual space shuttles.
omg. i have seen the shuttles take off in real life, and this video was still amazing. This is a really good video.
Any idea of any of this was slowed down or sped up? or is it all real time. I would guess its all real time, but just checking. The initial takeoff, nose view, is amazing how fast those clouds just come up and go by. Thats some serious speed if shown in real time!
The 'crawler' (The machine that carries the Space Shuttles to the launch pad.) is sped up. The 'crawler' moves no where near that fast. It takes it 8 hours to travel 3 miles.
@ParaglidingManiac They had six but now it is down to three. The Pathfinder was a prototype and is now in a museum, the Challenger exploded during take-off, Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry, and Discovery, Endeavor, and Atlantis are all still in working order but have now been retired as the program has been cancelled.
You can really appreciate how fast these things go and how far away they travel in this video
