This originally aired on December 12, 1964, on videotape {this edition is a kinescope film copy}. Burl was one of the most popular (and enduring) of American folk singers at the time, and this was one of his rare appearances at the "Palace"; incidentally, his "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" had premiered the week before [December 6th] as a "G.E. FANTASY HOUR" special on NBC...
@fromthesidelines Burl Ives, in his formative days, knew and worked with Woody Guthrie, although Woody was not comfortable with Ives, saying that "Burl sings like he was born in lace drawers". He was part of the first folk music scene, centered around New York in the late 30's and 40's, although not as politcally committed as most. Later Ives co-operated with the House Un-American Activities Committee--I don't know if he was simply a friendly witness or actually "named names".
