  • Is there any way to get this music for iTunes? I'd love to listen to this more than when I'm sitting at my computer...

  • That Donna Lee sounded amazing. Sucks that it cut off there.

  • those low notes are so sexy

  • @jackbanpk

    OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BBBBBBAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBYYYYYYY

  • @jackbanpk

    lol

  • Jaco Pastorius, Randy Brecker and a bass clarinet

    what an epic ensemble

  • thats such a sexy cut off ending

  • Simply put, Bobby Mintzer is a beast.

  • @adaniels1000 Great player, great composer, great arranger, great guy...yeah, he did a seminar at Ithaca College while I was there.

  • is he using a plastic reed??

  • God dammit that guy is a monster. Complemented by a beast of woodwinds.

  • OMG wow how does he get his high notes to sound like a sax? dats freakin awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hard to be a clarinet soloist, harder to be a bass clarinet soloist! but he's a great one!!!!!

  • Wow! I play tenor saxophone in jazz and bass clarinet in concert, but I now I totally want a jazz solo with bass clarinet. Although, it's really, really hard to sound this good, that's why you don't really see that many bass clarinet solos. I'm pretty sure he's some sorta special reed or something.

  • @Begeru It sounds like a Fibracell. Put one of those on a good mouthpiece and use LOTS of air :-D

  • In my show, the Earth Defenders, there is a character named Biden(I named him after our Vice President) and he plays the bass clarinet. And boy can he rock the house like this guy!

  • bass clarinet just pwned sax as a jazz instrument. didn't know it could play such high notes.

  • dahhhhhhmmmmmm!!!he gotta the bass clarinet thing goin oooonnnnn! wow! amazin, i gotta learn that

  • love this sooooo much, i took up playing the flute but i should have specialised in the clarinet, that solo is out of this world :)

  • that doesnt seem to be the natural tone of the bass clarinet (especially on the lower octave). Is he using some time of special mic? He's got to be

  • he"s one of the bestt ...

  • Hmm, has anyone made a transcription of this? If not, I'll be making my own :P

  • He makes that thing sound like a sax on the high notes with great tones and amazing scoops! And his low tone is great too! Great vid!

  • That was so amazing!! How did he get such sound?! He's my friggin hero!

  • I love the way it resonates!!

  • This is one of the wildest things I ever heard.... I think I just figured out what I been doing wrong on my bass - Bobby blows but I suck . . . .

    Great posting

  • and here i thought i was pretty good at the bass clarinet :P

  • Bari sax, just got pwned. I never want to play a soprano clarinet. Started on the bass and will never change

  • he is amazing omg!!!!!!!!

  • I'm just regular clarinet player net year I hope to move onto soprano or bass clarinet but compared to this guy I suck at the one I play right now!

  • i'm a bass clarinet player and this is beyond wat i could ever play he is amazing!

  • bass clarinet is such an underrepresented instrument; i personally prefer it over any saxophone

  • im the only low vioce in my band and it suck but he is amazing

  • i'm the only bass clarinet in my school. though we have a contralto player. but i might be able to try it next year...tehehe.lol. i love this video

  • Alright!, Bass Clarinet pride!

    from CA

  • jesus christ im one of the 3 bass clarinets in my school and i gotta say.... this is amazing

  • I think people have problems with the chorus effect because, without it, this would have sounded awesome, but instead we in the post-eighties era must listen through them to get to his playing. Making new, synthesized sounds is completely different, and generally more interesting, than this typical "bettering" that has tainted so much great music.

  • i wish i could play this good!

  • Bob Mintzer is amazing! I read an interview where he said he used the effects so he could hear himself in the electric bands.

  • He would play it because it's an instrument he is capable and comfortable playing, yet wanted to alter the sound of it slightly. Why is it a problem to synthesize it? I'm not sure I understand where you are coming from.

  • It's a plastic reed you stupid piece of shit, he's using it for tone effect

  • wtf isn't it double reed or single i can't tell but i'm sure its double......

  • @hsbhsbshb What are you talking about?

  • single

  • Dude, it's single...

  • single

  • Never in my life have I heard anyone crank so much air through a bass clarinet! It's great to hear someone who can bring out the full potential of the bass clarinet!

  • 4.23 -- donna lee

  • it sounds synthesized.

really awesome, we had him come to our school and we played a piece of him with him soloing.

    what makes that sound though?

  • Comment removed

  • This solo is absolutely mind blowing! Does anyone know if it has a specific name or if there is any sheet music on this out on the internet? Would be really awesome to try it out! Would never come close to this guy though... :P

  • holy crap! (jaws dropping)

  • this is probably one of the best executed and sounding jazz solos i've ever heard EVER!

  • i used to play but it was too hard i played for 4 years lol

  • just amazing... (especially from 2.06)

  • If you could tell me how to make it sound different, that would rock hard.

  • jazz/small number mouthpiece ?

  • the best jazz mouth peice i have played on for my bass clarinet would be a vandoren b46 its very open loud and jazzy i highly recomend it

  • small bass, but narly otherwise

  • 0.0 *jaw drops* holy crap!!!! i wish i could play that awesomly amazing!!!!

  • ur amazing.....cant imagine all the practice that went into tht....it payed off....Awesome job.....wow....

  • That's not me

  • XD lol

  • He's using some major sax embouchure there... hence why it sounds more like a sax than a clarinet :-p

  • I wish that I could play half as well as he can.

  • BASS CLARINETS ARE FRIGGEN AWESOME!!! And so is this guy, great skill

  • infinitely preferable to tenor sax as a jazz instrument

  • I always thought so too, but i never got to play mine in jazz band...

  • @sonic371 Great musician, but i disagree. Lol.

  • @sonic371 haha good one......not quite but this guy is beast....

  • he is using an effect called chorus .....the buzz is a plastic bass clarinet reed....the combination of reed and chorus setting on the mixer board gives him an almost electric sound.

  • This is inspiring. Is it just me or can bass clarinet be one of the jazziest AND the most classical instruments? His sound is like no other I've ever heard, and I love it! I award this video the coveted 6th muffin.

  • Clarinet is an extremely versatile instrument, be it soprano or bass :)

  • True that :)

  • footballlineman1 - you're an idiot. This is amazing.

  • it was a compliment it sounded so good! jeez! bobby mintzer is an amazing example for jazz musicians

  • that sound like something else is added to the begginging i mean bass clarinets dont sound like that

  • Good technique

  • it was a compliment...

  • No, really, I think he's right. I'm pretty sure he's got some chorus on that or something. He DOES got some MAD skills, though.

  • it's the reverb from the venue he's playing at, not any special effects

  • i think he's right. it sounds like a chorus effect is added

  • @footballlineman1 hes using the upper register over the break of the stem

  • @footballlineman1 I was thinking a phaser might be on there. But the amplified sound looks like it might be a blend of the on stage mic and either a contact mic on the reed or a mic drilled into the neck. I think it's both the way it's mic'd and some effects - it sounds very synth like. Good ears.

  • @footballlineman1 no they do sound like dat

  • i play bass clarinet!!!!!

    awesome instrument

i have a really good video where i sped it up

    check it out

  • omg dude i got to learn bass clarinet again.

  • Love the trumpet interlude too

  • Man that's good shit

  • thats right bass clarinet is the best instrument for jazz IN MY OPINION

  • He plays the Bass Clarinet on a whole new level.

  • ive been playing bass clarinet for 5 years , I DID NOT NO IT COULD DO THAT!!!

  • woah

  • This is hot. I think I saw him on BET Jazz like over 10 years ago. Maybe it was this. I don't know

  • Mintzer is amazing! Thanks for posting. Check out Eric Dolphy for some truly fantastic bass clarinet playing!

  • ...........wow

  • There is no excuse for typing like that.

  • what about like a severe physical disability?

  • was he playing delta city blues?

  • I play bass clarinet and this is something I want to work on for IHSMA.... does anyone know the name of this song and the artist? Where might I buy it?

  • This is from a Jaco Pastroius dvd that has been titled "Live At Montreux" and "Live and Outrageous". As far as I know, it was never released on cd.

  • this guy is a monster!

  • wow!! that must of taken a lot of practice and a really good abuchure

  • WOW!! I Play bass clarinet.. how do u make that sound?? ur amazing!!

  • i also play bass claranet.... he plays on the highest octave you can go so yeaaa...

  • And I play the bass clarinet too and I can tell you that there is no highest octave! :-)

  • for a while ive been playing around and i can manage to get way higher than this its acctually really difficult as you can imagine but it sounds awesome ill try to put a video up sometime

  • What's he using to make that sound? It doesn't really sound like a bass to me..

  • i think hes at somepoints of it using his tongue as a reed as well as the actual reed i can do but not as fast thats mental

  • WOW, considering this is a BASS, he rocks at those high notes!!!

  • If you think this guy rocks, and he rocks; check my video response.

  • I think he's using a double-layer-spaced reed.... wow, I really really want to learn this solo!

  • how the heck does he get that freaking amazing tone out of that? must be the reed...

  • he's mic'd, I think he's mixing it with a synth sound like Brecker sometimes does. plus he's a fuck-off clarinetist!

  • whats the name of this song!!

    its very good!

  • this is so pretty!!! by far one of the coolest looking insterments by far! Tie died forest green that gracefully slides up to limesish green!!!

  • i play clarinet and bass clarinet and bass is way coolerMAN THIS GUY ROCKS

  • Comment removed

  • I also play bass clarinet. If you really think so check the video response.

  • It plays such a rich and satisfying sound - way cooler than clarinets. This guy's freakin' awesome! :D

  • If you think the sound is good cooler than clarinets. Check my video response and listen somebody properly blowing this monster.

    Have a nice day!

  • That's a cool sound :D

  • Almost like a Sister Sadie quote at 2:40.

  • Oh... my... god... That was AMAZING!! I wonder what kind of bass clarinet that was? I'm a bass clarinet major (well, trying, but it's hard without my own bass! LOL). I've been trying to prove to instructors that bass clarinet is great in jazz, and now I have PROOF! HA! An alto sax is good, a tenor is better, but a bass clarinet is the best you can get. Truly awesome!

  • Bass Clarinets Rule!!!

  • bass clarinets deserve the same amount of attention as tenor saxes in jazz music

  • that was the most epic bass clarinet solo i have ever heard i hope i can play like that one day

  • The trumpet player for this gig is Randy Mintzer,Bob's brother.Brandy Brecker isnt Michaels alterego or instrument,either.kidding.

  • The DVD is Jaco Pastorius Live and Outrageous.I love it.

  • sweet!!!!!!!!!!! if i get drawn out of a drawing i get to rent a bass clarinet!!!!!!

  • Yeah Bob! You Bad.

  • Thx so much for sharing this!!!!!! :D

  • I can never get my high notes to come out like that...great tone

  • I hate when that happens. It could be anything from old pads, bent keys... Maybe it might even be time to get a different kind of reed. I would take a look at everything first - check for leaks, loose screws, things like that... and try playing it like a sax instead of on a peg (or vice versa). If the problem insists, you've either got an operator error (don't feel bad, it happens to all of us!!), or there's a problem that a professional should fix!

  • Amazing video. Thanks for posting this!

  • cuando vi esta presentacion de J pastorius quede impresionado...sobre todo en este tema, Mintzer, Brecker, Erskine todos un nivel muy muy alto, hay otro post del tema "dona lee" pero le falta la intro...gracias por subier esto!!

  • whoa they can go really high and really low lol!!!

  • i play the bass clarient its goes only one lower the the regular clarinet but just sounds lower and it can get just as high

  • what song is this?

  • Donna Lee

  • Bob Mintzer IS using chorus effects. The effect fits for modern jazz....

    Cheers!!

  • beautiful, absolutely beautiful

  • it sounds like a sax when you hit the really high notes and then you have to kinda get the reed in the sound

  • 2009 is my 55th year of listening after 1st hearing Mulligan but I can honestly say that I've not heard anything like that before.Absolutely fantastic and many thanks for posting

  • hmmmmm

    sounds kinda like a saxophone

  • Where is this man now? Absolutely fantastic. Tone, pitch, rhythym. I love the Bass Clarinet. He must be found.

  • Listen to the Yellowjackets. Also he is the new head of the Jazz Department at USC.

  • Thanks so much for putting this up...you appear to be the only user who had the foresight to realize that this is one of the most memorable and truly exciting improvisations in recent musical history!

  • You're welcome

  • I think Bob uses a "chorus" effect and of course Randy uses an auto-wah. Is there any effect this man hasn't tried yet ? ^^

  • What kind of effects is he using ?

    Nice !

  • About halfway through, Randy Brecker comes in on trumpet and has some effects. Sounds sorta like an auto-wah for his trumpet.
