Wow! I play tenor saxophone in jazz and bass clarinet in concert, but I now I totally want a jazz solo with bass clarinet. Although, it's really, really hard to sound this good, that's why you don't really see that many bass clarinet solos. I'm pretty sure he's some sorta special reed or something.
In my show, the Earth Defenders, there is a character named Biden(I named him after our Vice President) and he plays the bass clarinet. And boy can he rock the house like this guy!
I think people have problems with the chorus effect because, without it, this would have sounded awesome, but instead we in the post-eighties era must listen through them to get to his playing. Making new, synthesized sounds is completely different, and generally more interesting, than this typical "bettering" that has tainted so much great music.

This is obviously synthesized. Why play a bass clarinet if it is to make it sound like an electronic instrument ? Could use a sax or a trombone, his voice or even fart, wouldn't change much.
He would play it because it's an instrument he is capable and comfortable playing, yet wanted to alter the sound of it slightly. Why is it a problem to synthesize it? I'm not sure I understand where you are coming from.
Never in my life have I heard anyone crank so much air through a bass clarinet! It's great to hear someone who can bring out the full potential of the bass clarinet!
This solo is absolutely mind blowing! Does anyone know if it has a specific name or if there is any sheet music on this out on the internet? Would be really awesome to try it out! Would never come close to this guy though... :P
he is using an effect called chorus .....the buzz is a plastic bass clarinet reed....the combination of reed and chorus setting on the mixer board gives him an almost electric sound.
This is inspiring. Is it just me or can bass clarinet be one of the jazziest AND the most classical instruments? His sound is like no other I've ever heard, and I love it! I award this video the coveted 6th muffin.
@footballlineman1 I was thinking a phaser might be on there. But the amplified sound looks like it might be a blend of the on stage mic and either a contact mic on the reed or a mic drilled into the neck. I think it's both the way it's mic'd and some effects - it sounds very synth like. Good ears.

Oh... my... god... That was AMAZING!! I wonder what kind of bass clarinet that was? I'm a bass clarinet major (well, trying, but it's hard without my own bass! LOL). I've been trying to prove to instructors that bass clarinet is great in jazz, and now I have PROOF! HA! An alto sax is good, a tenor is better, but a bass clarinet is the best you can get. Truly awesome!
I hate when that happens. It could be anything from old pads, bent keys... Maybe it might even be time to get a different kind of reed. I would take a look at everything first - check for leaks, loose screws, things like that... and try playing it like a sax instead of on a peg (or vice versa). If the problem insists, you've either got an operator error (don't feel bad, it happens to all of us!!), or there's a problem that a professional should fix!
