this is going to be my first picking song :) i love this song....its hard but im determined....to learn it....i just have to work on blending...i know the tab...but im learning its coming along quite well thanks to Justin :)
To the phiosopherking: the fact tht u are getting blisters is really good. It means it will soon be easy to play as long as you want, cus ur fingers will get real rough. When I got blisters I just kept playing until my fingers bled they got rough real fast haha
Wow man, ive been playing for a year and a half now self taught and ive been in a rut lately but seriously something about the way you teach guitar just got me out of that rut :) thanks a lot and keep up the awesome lessons!
great video and description. I am just a beginner but i really want to learn this song. not easy... taking me awhile advancing through the cords and the thumb one is killing my hand. As I type right now I can tell I am going to have blisters on all my fingers just from practicing this for 20 minutes or so. that's what i get for having to hold the strings down for so long
I have just used YouTube without an account to learn to play some nice songs but you have done such a comprehensive job with this tutorial that I felt obliged to create an account just to say a massive thanks. This is one of my favourite songs of all time, much obliged Justin.
J--as always, magnificent work-- QUESTION: does anyone know where this picking style originated? In slide guitar circles, it is called the Chet Atkins method, but surely, he didn't invent it-- anyone have ANY insight into the emergence of this approach?
Great vid but I don't agree with your fingering on the third riff chord which is D7 chord with bass. I find it much easier to place my thumb down the low E on the second fret and simply move finger 1 to the first fret B string, finger 2 on second fret G string, and finger 3 on third fret B string. It makes it much easier to transition to the last chord in the riff. You can just slide it down one to the E on the low E string and fingers 1,2,3 to the F major position on the B, G, D strings.
@izzlerds There is a reason it's called an 'F' chord ;-). Try barring it with your thumb against the back of the neck, or, -though this almost certainly isn't applicable to you unless you also play like Elizabeth Cotten!- barring, but only up to the second string (i.e; fingertip on second string) this gives enough force that the string should sound nicely.
I was searching for the tab on this song, and it's blocked! As I see it, most Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton tabs are blocked... I hope they won't block Justin's vids too...
Sound wise, the Em is very close since Em7 and G6 are the same chord with different roots, so for ease of playing you could get away with doing it the common way, but it's not perfectly accurate.
This isn't meant to criticize because you did a great job teaching this song, but there's one mistake which everyone makes. In the 2d section of the verse where it goes from Am to the 7th fret position and then to the Dm, the form is NOT an Em. The notes are as follows: B on 4th string, D on the 3d string and G on the 2d string. Essentially it's a D form G6 chord with an open E string. If you watch Jimmy Page closely you can see him play this.
do you guys pick that with your nails? I find when I grow my nails I constantly hit the wrong strings, so I trim them and then my strumming doesn't sound as good. Its quite a quandary
you're awesome! really good tutorial. some people teach it really fast and i cant catch up sometimes but you teach it good. sooo thanks to you i know this song :D
you know,i don't actually play the guitar very well(but then again after some practice...)but my point is that even if you cant play the song, you shoud be proud that this is the music you listen, not shit like...well you know.So don't give up and keep trying
I don't agree, I find it very hard to learn from tabs, the reason is because I can't see what's happening so I don't know how to do it even if it's right infront of me. I have to see it being played before I can play it myself.
This is a nice way to play it, but your I/M/R are supposed to stay on G/B/E and you thumb is supposed to switch between bass notes E/A/D. But to each's own I guess. :P
@Thatguitarguy20 According to "classical" teaching maybe, but Led Zep isn't really classical is it? Just playing the bass notes with your thumb makes it easier to control the timing.
All 25 people who disliked this video, what is wrong with you, honestly what could you dislike about that, unless u just tried to play the song and gave up, blaming it on the video, shame on you
@mydirtyturban69 I don't get how is this important to you? I would like people comment on the video, this man put some effort into this one. And you are commenting on some people who disliked it. I mean, who cares?
@Saprofilth i was just simply surprised at the fact that people disliked the video as i also agree he is a great guitar teacher and guitarist, i watch many of his videos and enjoy them greatly, whcih is why i commented on it.
This guy is the best guitarist teacher on the internet. I've been only playing a year and I've learned Layla acoustic, Fire and Rain, Sweet Baby Jane, Patience, Needle and the Damage Done and this one from Justin.
All simply from his site, no personal lessons. He teaches the songs in parts and shows one exactly how to play each part along with the correct rhythms, strumming and finger placement. And might I say, most if not all off his lessons are from his personal transcriptions.
thatnk you so much you do lessons on practically every classic acoustic song i want to learn, its like youve created this channel just for me! thanks again
Hey Justin, thanks a million! I really get frustrated playing this because I flat pick, I pull my hair out trying to finger pick, so I appreciate how you detail the technique..I love your videos..long time subscriber..plus I play left so I need to "flip" everything in my head..
many many thanks for this tutorial - i could manage the first part well (although by hybrid picking only) but the 2nd one i could only get it done by your tutorial.
My hand isn't big enough to hold down the first fret of the low E and play an f chord...What do I do? I wanna play it right but I can't reach my thumb over the neck on that part of the guitar because my hands are very small :(
@jerk618 You can use your 1st finger, instead of thumb, or bar it. Your 3rd finger will be on the 2nd fret 3rd string and your pinky will move up to the 4th string on the 3rd fret. Then you can just slide down a fret to the next chord in the progression. It may not sound as fluid but it will work.
thank you very much for teaching me this... finger picking was new to me before this song and it is so cool, have to say I started using my pinky to pick the high E and things got a lot easier for me seems like the chord changes are much smoother and easier, wouldn't want to have one of them tasmanian devils chasing me them damn things look ornery..
