I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.
That poor interpreter, having to keep up with her "CD skipping" from 1:30 to 2:00 xD Also gotta give her props for actually being able to play that way live. I couldn't possibly screw with the rhythm that badly without fumbling on the piano. x_x
cant see the interpreter at all cuz that stupid light. i just signed in the front row at one of her shows. it was rad. she kept giving me weird looks. yay.

Well... if she needs a dude doing sign language, that means people in the audience are deaf, huh? then what's the point in her playing the piano for them? I mean... why would deaf ppl go to a concert? Not to be ride or anything. I'm just confused about the whole matter...
You could still watch the performance and feel the vibrations of the music. Just by watching her facial expressions you could tell what emotion the song conveys whether the song was happy, painful, angry, etc.
A sign language interpreter doesn't necessarily mean they're deaf. They could just not speak English. But, of course, they'd have to know ASL anyway. And it could just be for entertainment purposes.
and British Sign Language (which I believe the interpreter is doing.) are different. He did a FANTASTIC job though!! I'd love to Interpret for an Amanda Palmer concert!!!
Im deaf myself and I love go to concerts I can feel the beatz I perfer drums than pinaos interpreting really do help alot to understand what the singer are singing its fawken awesome !
The interpreter is doing British Sign Language right?
I mean, OPERATE/CONTROL is the same, but BOY and "A" is different. I know that BSL uses a 5-handshape to represent vowels very different from ASL. And It is in Manchester, England...
i've never heard this group before, but i think she's great. i know there's another guy in the group, but just amanda alone is entertaining enough. her playing with the interpreter was really funny. well done, amanda, well done.
What I find amusing here is the multi layered irony of her song being about a "boy" she can control for her own pleasure, and her words are controlling the actions of the sign language guy. So the signing guy ends up becoming a proxy for the coin operated boy in the song. Not literally of course, but having a man reacting to her every word as she performs it does lend an entirely new dynamic to the performance that even she couldn't have imagined when she wrote the song in the first place.
Many of the people who request an ASL interpreter for a concert are hard of hearing, or have residual hearing. I'm a sign language interpreter who works with MANY people with cochlear implants and other assisting devices- music can still be pleasurable for deaf and heard of hearing people w/ an interpreter. :)
she's just gettin a real kick out of messing w/ the signer;it's hilarious how evry1 groans wen amanda says "take him in the bath" nsted of "fuck him in the ass"
I think Amanda has a great time when performing this with other people as very few seem to be able to keep up. I remember seeing avideo fo her performing it with an orchestra and she was having fun with it haha.
i dont get the sign language guy thing. if there are deaf people there, then that wud mean they cant hear the song so wots the point? just 'listen' to the lyrics? (im not trying to be rude, im just making an observation). :P
ammm maybe the show had that guy and she wasn't the only one in the show? or maybe it was just fun to see him try to keep up with the "and i'll never be alo-------" part
Deaf doesn't necessarily mean can't hear anything. Many deaf people listen to music but still use ASL to communicate. It depends on the decibals and frequencies that they can hear. They might also enjoy the vibrations. It depends on the person.
I think Brian also does drums in another band, but I'm not sure. Also might have been having personal problems which prevented him...but I'm not sure.
lol she kept messing with him....reminds me of the translator at Universal Studios when i saw Beetlejuice...."see this guy right here? hes gonna say everything i say....watch this.....DIARRHEA!!!!" -- Beetlejuice
yeah i think that had to do with the venue. children go to pride. its either that or she didn't want to make the inturpeter say "fuck him in the ass". just my two cents.
