I was with this brotha' at the Apple Store today, and Frank said "start from the very beginning." I now see and hear "why!" IT'S ON!!! So to all the tutorials, here I go!!
One more of my unimportant comments....the lead is fairly exotic in sound, and I think you should not be using typical snare sounds for the beat. at least not that sound. Snares sometimes sound too much like banging something, and the overall piece is really trying to evoke something more sublime.
I just bought Trilium (Amazing bass module plugin) and it's huge on acoustic bass, but when I listen to jazz albums, a lot of time the bass comes across without a lot of texture, and just has that bottom sound...which works in the mix...doesn't draw too much attention to itself. The other thing is when you use a lead voice like yours, it occupies a completely different acoustic space that the bass...and the drums do too. So, as the game show host says.."the board goes back...not a match"
Nice work 'Ninja. I just bought Logic(academic version) for 150! I'm burnin to get a apogee duet, and to acoustically treat my room. Hoho, it's going to be immense.
Hey! Is it Absynth that makes those lead sounds? If so, does it make more sounds like that, or is it all pads and soundscapes? I mean, would it be hard to tweak sounds similar to the ones SFLogicNinja's playing?
A computer, a control keyboard, a good player et voila! Result is amazing! After all, the best synths aren't more than that, keyboards connected to computers (and the worse is that they are expensive while they have smaller screens ;-).
Wow! How do you get to be so good at everything? I just discovered your Logic tutorials and they're really good. Great keyboard skills too - and I love the way you adapt your technique for each of the instruments you play. A great communicator and educator too. Thanks for being so generous with your time and skill.
In one sense, you can't change it from the clicking sound.
Klopfgeist is Logic's instrument designed specifically for metronome sounds and it can be altered in Logic's preferences to have different sounds.
If you really want a metronome to be another sound, the easiest way would be to make your own custom "click track" by playing one track all the way through with whatever sound you want and then quantizing it and turning off the metronome during recording.
Well, heres another idea... In the environment, go to the layer 'Click and Ports' there is a click object there that looks like a metronome. If you cable it to an instrument, like a drum kit, you can adjust it's mini note settings in the inspector and have it play whatever you like. You then turn the klopfgeist off in the metronome settings...
david, does it make since to lay tracks from external keyboard/korg m3, motif via duet in stereo or setting up through the enviroment window which confuses me. i have the apogee duet.
Do you mind telling me what keyboard that is you're playing? I too have Logic Pro as well as ALL of the NI and Spectrasonics stuff. I just ordered the new Omnisphere from Spectrasonics and can't wait ti get it! That and the update to NI Komplete 5 : ) Now I am in the market for a new keyboard controller. I currently use a Casio Privia 88 key weighted keyboard which is great but I want somthing to set on my audio desk. I also use a small Oxygen 8. Great videos man! keep up the awesome work!
That's some great playing my friend. I was wondering if there's any "dark" sounding ( Nine Inch Nails springs to mind) synths you'd recommend? I'm just getting into this kind of stuff and would like to add some electronic elements to my own music. Thanks
I'd go for some of the Native Instruments stuff, then maybe a modular synth or two... it's really not the actual synth quite so much that does it for NIN, i think.. i think it's more that Trent & co. are really good at being creative within the parameters of synthesis and sampling. Guitar Pedals are a good thing, too...
great job btw do u no how to assign samples on the pads on an akai mpd24 with logic express or something? i havent gotten the logic yet but also what logic program would be most suitable for like sample based hip hop beat making with the akai mpd24 i need it to be like one of the cheaper versions like express or something
i believe he made that on the fly. he recorded everything as he went, maybe synced it really quick as it played, then when he had the rhythm and background keyboard loop going, he went into improvising the lead keys and at the end, the voice..on the fly man. that's why i got so into it, seeing you make it and play it right then. big ol' smile on my face right now bruva. :P
Amazing way to let music just BE. I am learning Logic now and hope I can get acquainted with it very soon in such a way to just focusing on the creative process instead of how to do the techie stuff. You rule dude.
It's so good to know that yr playing has so much groove and soul...as a newcomer to your tutorials this underlines their importance to me.Such a cool and totally human performance too. Thanks
I'm enjoying your tutorials to the fullest as I am studying at a musicproduction school and this is really a wonderful compliment.
And often times those who are good with the certain program, aren't always good musicians... But when I heard that bassline... Oh boy, you have my full respect now I tell you!
I signed up for YouTube just to tell you how much I appreciate your tutorials. You really are an excellent instructor! You learning Logic Pro comfortable.
great improv and great tutorials! im a beginner trying to set up my home studio... i have logic, any particular easy to use equipment you strongly recommend?
i've always liked this lounge/nujazz stuff... im an enthousiast myself but find it very hard to make this kind of music on your own because a lot are live instruments..
I bought a crazy instruction dvd: "the art of mixing by david gibson" on amazon.. he would probably like to hear this song in an asymmetrical mix :P
David likes to mix visually, and his school was right down the street from us in 2001. That was a rough year. I'm reserving judgement on his teaching style and vision of mixing, but he's a Bay Area teacher, so I gotta represent. Thanks for watching!
this is amazing... how many years of experience do you have (piano, logic, and you seem to have exceptional rhythm for a pianist so maybe a little drums?, ect...)
Hi there! Thanks for the kind comment. I have about 24 years of piano playing under my belt now, and I spent a good 15 years gigging professionally. I lived with drummers for about 8 years as well, who always laughed at my drum programming until I got it right. Now I can pretty much play the drums on keyboard... at least most rudimentary stuff. I might actually upload a video of me playing keyboard drums.... Take care!
Please, do upload more of your stuff!! Other than talking about software -- which a lot of people do, you actually know how to play -- which a lot of people don't! :)
And a big thanks for the excellent videos. Keep on going!
The EVP is being squashed rather excessively. I find the EVP is rather weak unless tooled. It's Absynth 2 doing the lead. i think I used 'Space Lead'. It's fantastically expressive. I'm going to upload my own patches in the following months. Thanks for listening!
It's a M-Audio Keystation Pro-88. It's actually just a controller, which means it has no sounds. I'm using it to control Logic Audio on a macintosh. I don't like the action very much on the keystation. I prefer Yamaha or Roland weighted keyboards. Thanks for listening!

The most important things will be your audio interface, your speakers, and - don't laugh - a good chair.
I love the Apogee Duet, I love the Mackie HR824 monitors.
as for a chair, that's personal preference.
As for a mic, check out the octava mics. If you have a bit more money, check out the AKG414 or nuemann TLM103
SFLogicNinja 3 years ago
May I suggest a Herman Miller Aeron for your studio chair. Theres nothing better really.
