Probably the greatest dance number from a movie ever. The way her long scarf blows in the wind, and the set that goes on forever, with no computer tricks. It just looks magnificent. I hate to say this but....They just don't make them like this anymore!
@deeprose4 you are so right. i'm sitting here like 'geez i was born in the wrong time frame'...i would have loved to have seen this movie in the theaters. cyd charisse is simply breathtaking. if i ever had a chance to dance with any lady just once it would be cyd charisse....
I love when they are all wrapped up in the scarf...its as though they are saying, this is our world, our love.....and nobdy or nothing can touch it.....or steal it away.
I wish Hollywood would make films like this one again. Gene Kelly was not only handsome but supremely talented. I never could understand the attraction to Fred Astaire.
how in the hell? i tried a scarf sequence for my film but it just went all funky most of the time, whereas theirs looks like the scarf did its movements on purpose
My dream is to learn how to dance like that. It looks amazing - a dance so full of emotion and passion. What is that kind of dancing called? I don't really have a hobby no more, and I've always had a little inner passion for dancing. I'd love to learn that!
@sjeezy93 . I'm no expert- but- I think that kind of dancing is called 'contemporary' dancing. It often has classical ballet-like moves, sometimes modified, with anything else you want to put in as well. There are no hard-and-fast rules in contemporary (unlike classical ballet and other types of dancing), and you often see a mix of different types of dance rolled into one routine. 'Contemporary' is pretty much anything goes! I hope this helps.
@guppy0112 youre spot on :-) also could be classed as 'lyrical' which has a lot of elements of ballet and you train for it much like you would ballet but the upper body and neck are much more released than in classical ballet.
I used to feel like this sequence was just jammed in awkwardly, but the more I watch it the more I like it, especially the way it parallels the rest of the film
What kind of ballet shoes were those? It looks like Cyd is dancing in her bare feet, that's damn sexy. It still can't beat her hotel room number in Silk Stockings.
@lacuca007 If you look at still images of this number, you can see that Cyd is wearing a nude-colored roman sandal, which does seem to disappear when in motion. She was certainly a dish. And I also love the 'Silk Stockings' camisole-and-slip dance.
One of my favorite films. Apparently, this scene was shot on MGM's largest sound stage. Cyd Charisse recalled that there were several large fans blowing full blast to get her 'cape' to flow the way it did.
We hardly see films shot on this scale anymore. Sad really. No massive sound stages, no 'real' actors/dancers. Just give 'em a green screen and a computer and you have a hit.
Cyd Charisse is probably my favorite dancer of all time. While I love these older movies, I love some of the newer dance competitions I see on TV today. They don't really compare to each other but it's nice to see dance on TV.
I saw an interview from Cyd Charisse who said it took forever to get this sequence shot- the scarf would just not cooperate, the fan blew it in every direction but the right one......
Two great dancers... a Dali-inspired set, a fantastic veil and Charisse's elegant feet. Such excellence of performance and visuals can be equalled, but it rests at an unsurpassable level. I cannot imagine anyone improving on this. It's at a point where it's a matter of taste.
Love this scene; so beautiful, so romantic, so graceful. Back when dancers had to convey sensuality with their clothes on and directors didn't have mainframe computers to work with. Not taking anything away from this number, but I wonder how it would have looked with her in toe shoes?
@janestahl Funny you should notice that!! I was just thinking that as Cyd became a bigger and bigger star, her dances moved further and further away from classical ballet costumes. Having said that, I love the roman sandals, makes her look more like the goddess she already is!!
They didn't let the fabric to touch the floor even for a second. And where the heck are the fans?! Unbelievable! One of the greatest scenes in movie history.
Another one for sizzling Sarah N (since it also has her boy Gene in it). Cyd Charisse and a whole lot of white chiffon in the dream ballet that's somewhat awkwardly inserted into SINGING IN THE RAIN, but still gorgeous.
There is a video of Dancing in the rain that Youtuber " Breton2Robert " posted with Supertramp music. The video is called " Its raining (Dancing in the rain ) Again. Gene Kelly is perfectly timed with Supertramp music...Wonderful piece of video
they do a really great job on this scene but i think the scene they were in before this one was more intresting than this one but still beuatiful and timeless, such grace the both of them had!
this one 2 minute long scene out showcases any dance performance be it ballet, on stage or or on screen ever produced... this is love passion and all things to be expressed in any musical genre,..I love Gene and Cyd.., such a classic and moving piece forever engraved in my heart and mind forever ^_^
If you like this, please check out the earlier Moszkowsky's Waltz with the the superlative ballet dancers Lepeshinskaya and Gusev. I think it has a lot of paralells to this, and it's pretty neat to compare these two dances. :)
after watching American in Paris, the introducer on TCM, said that Cyd was hired to play the role in American in Paris, but she discovered she was pregnant and declined so the part was given to Lesile Caron... I would have loved to have seen her in that role.. and this is coming from someone 29 and not even around during those times..i just feel her magic
@stylestar07 I'm with you! I love Leslie Caron but it would have been interesting to see how Cyd Charisse would've handled that role in An American in Paris. However, I think they would have had to change the storyline a little because Cyd was more like a "madame" & more mature than a mademoiselle like Leslie!
I don't care if this whole scene thing was jammed in, its gorgeous, and this dance especially reminds me of a Salvador Dali painting with its endless deserted background and heightened colors.
This film is about entertainment and I was successfully entertained so it works.
@pescadoyventanas You are right, there is influence from Dali´s landscapes here and , at the same time, Dali himself was probably inspired by this scene for his following paintings. Wonderful : the dance of man and woman across the Universe.
Of course one must lend poetic license to this piece for it to work and be fully enjoyed. Deviating from the conventional to achieve the desired effect is precisely the liberty the film is taking! Particularly Lockwood. If it seems to have no value its because the viewer is never shown more than a trace of DC. We only see a component here and there of an actual finished product. We never get to see how all the pieces will fit.
But its a work in progress with the quite clear presumption that the dance numbers will in fact enhance the final outcome. At first down on himself because of talkies, Lockwood later realizes maybe his real strength is dancing & singing, not acting. But because DC cant change its French revolutionary theme he must incorporate his ideas into the film as a sort of patchwork. He clearly refers to the dance numbers as the modern or present day part of the picture.
And since he really wants to turn heads, what better way than to showcase Cyd Charisse! With her great looks, fabulous legs and wonderfully athletic dance technique! Blending technical accomplishment with erotic passion to give a simply peerless performance.
Relevant!? Sure. Its an idea! W/the success of JAZZ SINGER, silent film gives way to Talkies. Remember the storyline? After a bad preview, Kelly is caught in the bumpy transition with OConnor & Reynolds to save DUELLING CAVALIER w/ideas of merging a modern musical! Kelly calls the story of a young hoofer arriving in NY, Broadway Melody & includes this 2nd dreamy over his head number in the film featuring Cyd. In the end their film becomes Dancing Cavalier & saves the day. Real film noir!
I distinctly remember the rationalization they made for it, but that doesn't change the fact that this number was shoehorned in (and rather inelegantly) by completely changing around "Dueling Cavalier" to something completely different. There's no trace whatsoever of the original "Dueling Cavalier" in the sequences shown in that part of the film. No merging, no reason to suspend disbelief, just Gene Kelly showing off his talent (substantial though it was) with Cyd Charisse.
Personally, I'm quite thankful that Gene used these scenes to "just show off his talent." He was an amazing dancer who devoted much time and effort into everything he did in his movies. Some might say that this is a little indulgent, but look at the gem it is! Look at the millions who enjoy this film year after year! I applaud Gene and Cyd for their marvelous work :)
"Indulgent" is probably the best word to describe it - thanks for that, I was having a hard time expressing the sentiment. Honestly, I was always more of a fan of Astaire (who has himself done some fine work with Cyd). Personally, I much prefer Donald O'Connor's work in this film - "Make 'Em Laugh," now there's a gem, and one that doesn't sacrifice the narrative integrity of the film.
And that was by design, just eye candy!Singin in the Rain, was a movie-about-the-movies. Her character had no name and didn't need one! She was there to provide, w/Kelly, an exhilarating ballet sequence which had nothing to do with the rest of the film, but is one of the most sensual scenes ever done in a musical. The sexy short chemise, combined with the sheer chiffon fabric, as she proudly displays her gams, her trademark. Nice, firm, pretty toe points-sexy feet. Bella!
Even so, it just struck me as odd that in the era of the integrated musical, they would include a scene of no value beyond artistry. I felt like it added nothing to the film as a whole and only served to distract. Yes, it is beautiful, and yes, it is sensual, but I honestly didn't feel it had any place as part of the larger narrative.
Everything these two great dancers did they did exceptionally well. She was very elegant and one of the the best dancer of musicals; he was a perfectionist and the best modern dancer of all times. Thanks Basil for this
I love this scene. Everything about it is spectacular. Especially that dress. I remember wanting a dress like that when I was little. That's before I realized it would be so impossible to even walk with that long train in the back.
yeah, I know what you mean. I've been thinking the same thing since I was little. I love everything from the 1920's to late 50's. Everything was so much classier back then.
They do not make them like this any more and I have not seen anyone with the same talent that both Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse had in any newer movies.
Oh man, I pretty much wish I could BE Cyd Charisse here--she's so perfect and elegant!! (And dancing with/kissing Gene Kelly isn't exactly a bad deal either!)
8 ventilators were needed for this scene to put the fabric in the right direction! amazing! what I love even more is the "chemistry" of this scene between Cyd and Gene! I love these movies!!!
Now you KNOW you've got great legs when you can prance around in flat, roman sandals and your gams are STILL slammin'. That was the uncanny figurativeness of Ms. Charisse. Well done.
Usually, when I see that another celebrity has died, I say, "Oh, that's sad" and then move on, but Ms. Charisse has stuck with me, and now I know how unique and special she was. A lovely talent.
Cyd Charisse was the greatest female dancer to ever grace the silver screen. Check out our tribute to her at: (remove spaces)groups. msn. com/ classiccinema/ reviews. msnw?all_topics=1
And here is a terrific short biography link:
w w w . humorinthenews. com/ cyd/ pages/ bio_1. html
Cyd was truly a legend. Great actress, excellent dancer, best set of legs. She will be forever missed. This clip from the the film "Singin' In The Rain" is being dedicated to the loving memory of Cyd Charisse. We'll miss her.
Class, style, and elegance. While they don't make movies like this anymore, we can all watch these wonderful classics and show them to our kids. Keep the legends alive!
Imagine some studio inserting a dream sequence like this in a film today--complete with ballet moves. I can't imagine a studio daring, nor can I imagine what the audience reaction would be.
Gene Kelly said in an interview around the time of "That's Entertainment II" that they had to use a fan powered by a helicopter motor to get that long piece of fabric to billow like it did. Cyd Charisse must have been VERY strong to withstand that and dance with such grace.
Gosh, good point. That's amazing. It must have been very loud as well and yet they look so serene and relaxed. What an amazing scene - just breathtaking.
oh what i wouldnt give to be wrapped up in Gene Kelly's arms!!

Everything these two great dancers did they did exceptionally well. She was very elegant and one of the the best dancer of musicals; he was a perfectionist and the best modern dancer of all times. Thanks Basil for this

I will never forget this scene. No wonder people had so many children in those days. Ooo la la!

ILLUSIONS ARE MUCH MORE SEXY THAN TODAY'S ENCOUNTERS. BACK THEN WE ALWAYS LEFT SOMETHING TO THE IMAGINATION! :-)

If I was given a buck every time I hear it said by someone who has just seen Gene Kelly's dance... I would be a millionaire and not AT ALL surprised!

Movies just aren't this pretty anymore. And of course there are no stars like these two talented, gracious people. Not one.

You've hit the nail on the head!

That was amazing!!!
They do not make them like this any more and I have not seen anyone with the same talent that both Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse had in any newer movies.
R.I.P. Gene Kelly

It's never a bad deal when you get to dance with and kiss Gene Kelly ;)

8 ventilators were needed for this scene to put the fabric in the right direction! amazing! what I love even more is the "chemistry" of this scene between Cyd and Gene! I love these movies!!!
puppymomsheart 3 years ago 4
Now you KNOW you've got great legs when you can prance around in flat, roman sandals and your gams are STILL slammin'. That was the uncanny figurativeness of Ms. Charisse. Well done.

Usually, when I see that another celebrity has died, I say, "Oh, that's sad" and then move on, but Ms. Charisse has stuck with me, and now I know how unique and special she was. A lovely talent.

Cyd was truly a legend. Great actress, excellent dancer, best set of legs. She will be forever missed. This clip from the the film "Singin' In The Rain" is being dedicated to the loving memory of Cyd Charisse. We'll miss her.

Imagine some studio inserting a dream sequence like this in a film today--complete with ballet moves. I can't imagine a studio daring, nor can I imagine what the audience reaction would be.

The stage wasn't as deep nor the steps as high as they appear, so the whole thing is just this mystical, dreamy apparition.

Gene Kelly said in an interview around the time of "That's Entertainment II" that they had to use a fan powered by a helicopter motor to get that long piece of fabric to billow like it did. Cyd Charisse must have been VERY strong to withstand that and dance with such grace.
flamingvans 3 years ago 7
Gosh, good point. That's amazing. It must have been very loud as well and yet they look so serene and relaxed. What an amazing scene - just breathtaking.
