Why is he lamenting the last 20 years? HOW LONG do students study at UCF prior to graduating? And "don't call me ever" to the cheaters. Why in the world would they? This professor REALLY has to have a reality check. What an idiotic fool
Also, tool of a professor, NO statistical data analysis, can be 100% accurate in identifying cheaters. What fool of a student would agree to rat himself or herself out? Why does Academic Affairs have a "way out" for cheaters)? What fool would to here? "Every faculty member" should have been doing their job. Original exams!!
I had a "History of Brazil" professor at the University of Arizona who was way "over the top" in his assignments, and committment, (interestingly he was not Brazilian, he was from Illinios, but he really pronounced some words with a great Portuguese accent). he told his grad students, (as a group) that they were not stupid, but not the cream of the crop top shelf students, either. Not to worry, lazy and stupid professor, you won't have to grade them. Your TAs will. If I am wrong, please tell me how to cheat on an essay test. I would love to know.
Teachers and Professors: Stop being such lazy and idiotic tools. Write ORIGINAL tests and quizzes for each class and class section. Using the same test more than once is asking for trouble, a sign of a lazy and naive teacher or professor, makes the teacher or professor almost complicit in the cheating. Teachers: do you duty to prevent cheating. Stop being such lazy idiotic fools. Sorry for the reality check, teachers. John M
This reminds me of Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island. The physics teacher used the same quiz in the morning and afternoon classes. Clearly some students in the morning class gave the answers to their friend in the afternoon class. So the teacher threatened to fail the entire class unless the perpetrators came clean. (Interestingly, this is more harsh than at college for the same offense). Then while angry, the teacher wrote a series of questions on the board for the quiz.
See if I got this straight, one third of the class cheated, and the professor has some statistical proof as to who they were. And if they come forward, all is forgiven if they take a 4 hour ethics class? How about this: 1. Fire the professor for his laziness and stupidity. 2. Erase the scores and count the final exam with a higher % of their final grade. 3. Permanently discontinue the use of test banks. 4. Require that the professor do his job and write original exams for every exam.
THESE KIDS WERE NOT CHEATING. They were using a SAMPLE TEST to study and the professor said he MAKES HIS OWN MIDTERM, but ended up using the same exam as the ones the kids studied with! This isn't cheating, it's a lying and lazy professor. Shame they all got in trouble for something that was obviously the professor's error.
@MayfielderOSU: just a dumb mistake by a professor with years of experience, it doesn't necessarily constitute cheating on the students' part even if they admit use of the test banks unless it is explicitly written on the syllabus that they aren't to be used, but if you have access to the tests by legal means, why the hell wouldn't anyone use them. I'd take a cheating A over an honest F, since on your transcripts there isn't an asterisk that differentiates the two.
To prove that anyone cheated, it would have to take a confession of every student who used the test banks. There is no way to use email against these students unless a search warrant was issued or an unlawful search of emails were performed, which wouldn't stand in a court and thus UCF academic affairs council. Unless by admission of guilt, there is no way to prove cheating in this situation since the students used their MEMORY to answer the questions on the tests, c'mon kids
hahaha hand delivered note from God. This guy is an amazing speaker, that would be a super difficult speech to make without stumbling over his words in anger lol.
Hey prof, why didn't you think of this before the midterm? Get with the times, if you don't think test questions in a class of 600 taught over the years might come together in a study note test bank, you are way out of touch. The toughest thing you need to admit is that you are lazy testing students with regurgitated test questions. Where do you get your questions Prof? Don't you use a test bank?
I don't know how long this class is but this man could have sent all this information in an email and taught the lesson he is paid to teach. He is just mad his lazy teaching technique caught up with him.
If I had "cheated" I'd take the gamble and if I got caught in his "net" I would proceed to take legal action because there is nothing that can PROVE that I cheated on that midterm
Perhaps this is overly cynical, but I suspect cheating is EXACTLY the kind of preparation that will serve these students once they are in the business world.
that's the result when publishers provided a one-stop shop- complete with test-banks and the professors don't have to work in creating test for what they taught. this is one lesson the educational system must take note of. way to goo professor! Now you have to take a continued leadership and accountability role and work for what you are paid to do. TEST. I Love it.
This is like my AP english teacher this year failing my critique on the classic 'the Hunchback of Notre Dame' by victor hugo, because it was 'college level work' and he was convinced it 'wasn't my work'. Yet, he had NO PROOF. This professor also has no proof, just a hunch, which isn't enough to act upon. Hopefully I don't get this teacher once I get to UCF, but hey, you win some, you lose some.
wait... i don't get why this is consider cheating. The students studied a test bank, they didn't steal a test from the prof's office. People study from test bank all the time, that's how tutoring agencies and publishers make money off desperate students. Test bank is study material. The prof should blame himself for letting the students figuring out that he's being lazy and grabbing questions from a bank than making the questions up on his own.
The kid who genuinely failed this midterm, is sitting in his chair, thanking the gods and actually enjoying this lecture, unlike the 1/3 of his classmates who are shitting their pants.
Wish I were in that class and did the word bank thing...I would take that "gamble." No forensic data in the world can PROVE someone cheated on a test.
@thickslab Obviously, you are quite an impressive individual! The question was rhetorical and you still got it wrong. Perhaps you should get the answers beforehand as well, then maybe you will get something right!
@MayfielderOSU To prove that the person cheated, the professor would demand them to take the test, and if they scored high the first time and scored low the second time, they cheated because they only knew the material on the 700 question word bank and not the actual material from the class.
@kochacola018 if you take two different tests, the difficulty cannot and will not be the same. This is called STATISTICS and in no way does if constitute cheating if you do worse on one of the tests. If the students had access to the tests by way of LEGAL means, this is not considered cheating. Since every class I've ever taken uses a text book where the publisher creates test banks; the professors know that we know about this and have access to them.
@crshh do you know how much money you don't make when you don't have a college degree or have an academic irregularity on your transcript? This is no different than anything else, you deny everything until substantial evidence is provided that proves beyond a reasonable doubt your intent to cheat. Standard deviations and trends don't automatically mean cheating, thats why its called "circumstantial" evidence and something like this wouldn't stand, anywhere.
@corymcneil: In a word "no". All altering the content, weighting or any other facet of the syllabus does in just about any academic institution grants you is the ability to appeal. Given that there is significant evidence that a large portion of the class cheated. I doubt appealing would help. Your imaginary ideas about "physical proof" are adorable btw.
Unless they can physically prove the students cheated they cannot punish them. The risk of punishing an innocent student far outweighs punishing the far larger number of cheaters.
Secondly a professor cannot simply choose to change the weighting or force a repeat exam, they are bound by the syllabus. Unless all students are in agreement the professor cannot simply flex their muscle into doing what they want.
What an idiot teacher. The students didn't sign anything excluding them from using test bank questions. Test bank questions are often distributed from old textbook editions.
Sorry, prof., this ISN'T cheating. I had an economic prof. who posted a link to the test bank for his class...why? It isn't possible to memorize the answer to 600+ questions. The only "advantage" we had was that we knew the TYPE of questions & the types of "trick" questions, but I had to study. My English Prof. thinks there's cheating in the class, but its just lazy students using SparkNotes & some quizzes its easier to get by on that than on other quizzes.
It's how college go's. It's not High school in an sense. If this as one or two students it wouldn't have been such a big deal to the rest but with the majority of 600 students? They couldn't have dealt with it better.
@LauraLynneDevine30 well wouldn't he deserve this to happen to him for being lazy. To not make up a new test that had nothing to do with an old one. I feel that it's not cheating looking at old test for studying, but if the prof is lazy than I guess its considered cheating
You know, I agree fully that cheating is a massive slap in the face to a professor, and my heart goes out to Prof. Quinn, but that being said, he couldn't bluff his way out of a wet paper bag. Why don't he ACTUALLY use his statistical forensic methods (or whatever) and nail those who did it? Makes no sense to punish those who tried and did it right!
Erratums (because I'm not perfect): Prior post 2nd line should read: Was Bertrand Russell right that laziness is a virtue? 2nd, last line 2nd word should be "the" not "he."
Further observation: Does Quinn admit, sometimes, he can't pass his own exams?
No 1st Amendment or Equal Protection violations here? Was Bertrand Russell Fancy this, a professor at Newsweek's 177th ranked Tier 1 school appoints himself proctor-in-chief for testing and publishing of the entire academic world and then admit he's unprepared to teach a scheduled lesson because teaching makes him physically ill and he believes his life in the teaching profession has been a waste. From he mouths of babes and I don't mean UCF co-eds!
wow, fuck the professor and his laziness. i dont even go to the damn school and im disappointed that people would even speak about cheating to anyone else. u cant trust anybody, just keep it to yourself and get your A and keep it moving. dont brag about it. thats what you dumbasses get. ur in college, u should know how to be street smart when it comes to cheating by now. smfh
Get a life! Go jog and lose some weight instead of threatening students. Why are you using test banks and old tests anyway ? Why don't you CREATE your own tests everytime? Just get a life.
I got to UCF. This professor is right in the idea that someone might have cheated. There's alao a chance (kinda slim, but still there) that he got exceptionally smart students. I will agree, that he is acting kinda cocky, but if some students did in fact get access to tye test bank and cheat, they ruined it for everyone. But, this happened last year, so lets all just move on.
These kids who cheated in this Strategic Management class "strategically managed" the test. Clearly they should be getting an extra letter grade bump BECAUSE they cheated.
I've never attended UCF. I don't know this man and I can't tell how much effort he put into teaching his class. I can read him like a book though, experience grants you that ability. He may seem pissed and frustrated about cheating and loading slides but cut one of his limbs off, reattach it and he'll have a wondrous slide-loading, test-cheating carefree outlook on life.
Looks like a typical know it all never wrong stubborn bastard trying to cover his own ass. He cheated too using a test bank and know it looks like he's pissed off his laziness was discovered.
I love how all the college students are calling this professor a "loser". He is simply trying to teach his students a lesson that cheating will not get you far in life and especially in business!
Actually someone posted his first lecture and it has him saying all of this if you don't believe me. the video is titled "[Official] UCF Richard Quinn Misleads Capstone Students Test Scam Cheating"
Not sure I understand all the negative comments. This teacher is doing exactly what he should be doing. It's called academic dishonesty and it should be punished.
@will8787 I agree, for the most part. But lecturers at my university are banned from university policy by using publisher's testbanks. It's a terrible idea to use a testbank.
because the professor was using a published/standard set of study questions and blamed his students for having them. check out his first lecture where he told the students that he writes all of the questions himself. its titled the video is titled "[Official] UCF Richard Quinn Misleads Capstone Students Test Scam Cheating"
Soo...what about the poor buy that actually studied for the test and made a 100? Are they going to assume he cheated just because he had a perfect score?
They can't get 100% proof someone cheated. Even if there was a little proof you could put on your acting skills and get out of it. They just wouldn't have solid enough proof to go as far as kicking you out.
I agree this prof had it coming but as a student I would never cheat just because its a bad habit and it teaches you to be lazy.
so since i have never heard of these "study banks" heres my two cents... The professor is upset I get that, clearly he doesnt write his own exams hes been teaching a long time so i guess he is to blame a bit for this crazy mishap. Since in all my years of the schooling infrastructure I HAVE NEVER seen or ever thought to get a study guide from a publisher, or anywhere- I feel the students are also to blame. They clearly didnt study or they wouldnt be mad and just take the test over. still sucks
@musicalmike235 : The typical university policy on academic dishonesty is an immediate failing grade in the course in question, and often immediate ejection from the university.
Now, consider the facts: Whether you cheated or not you have to retake the test. Statistical analysis can't eliminate all false positives (someone who didn't cheat being identified as a cheater). The penalty is only 4 hours of lectures. Even if you *didn't* cheat it might make sense to say you did.
what a bullshiter this guy is, if i used the test bank i wouldn't give a shit cause you can tell hes bullshitting. It's his fault, in the begininng of the semester he told everyone that he made the exams, the test bank is a resource. Whats next a student can only study a max 5 hours anymore than that is cheating?
This asshammer is lazy. At the beginning of the semester he said he writes his exams, then the rubber hits the road and it turns out he uses a pre-written, corporate test bank. He is a liar. If he can't be bothered to write his own exams, why should his students be bothered to study the entire course rather than the narrow field of the exam?
@Genners111 good plan, good plan. I am an engineer, and sometimes social skills come in handy, even though I studied business for 3 years before that. The Bible is doing a very good job to help me with my social skills. :-)
The comment I put up there was a joke, no offenese business students.
all this about how upset he is: BULLSHIT! if you have been a teacher that long, and are not an idiot, you know students will cheat if given the chance......
He said he creates his own tests, obviously a lie....and the students were studying. I know a professor that has his old quizzes and tests available for students to study off of so these kids were basically studying off of "old tests" when just so happens Dr.Lazyass used the same one bc he lied. BOOM
@dogmeatthedead the prof said he made up his own tests. . .now did he or did he not use a pre-made test? kthxbye....don't be so fast to throw insults around you make yourself look immature and if you're not a teenager I'm sorry that you have stooped to their level on the internet.
@Shockandaweful Just a thought. Some professors will make a test bank of a large number of possible questions for exams, say a bank of 700 questions of their own making. They will then make their exams based on those banks, say exams containing 50 questions. Just because he used a bank does not mean that he used a bank not of his own making.
@BAVideography Wow, don't see the reasoning behind calling me dumbshit, but all right. Nowhere have I seen or read that the students bought anything from online, just that they seem to have gotten a hold of the test bank. Again, professors will sometimes make large banks and pull from that. Either way I don't think it much matters in the end.
Screw this retarded professor, I swear I bet you 98% of the students will leave his class never remembering one sentence they wrote in his class. If this is a graduate course I can understand, but undergrad come on. I hate teachers who act like their class is the only one that all the students in their class are taking.
You can tell this professor truly cares about his students ... he sounds heartbroken that his students would do something like this... if he didn't care about his students, he could either just let it slide because it wouldn't make a difference to him, he only has to do more work. And the deal he gave them is unbelievable, a second chance when most professors won't do such thing! Anyone who says this professor sucks is stupid ... he could make things a lot worse if he wants.
I am a Professor. This is why I do not use "canned" materials for exams. Shame on this lazy prof for not creating his own exams. If anybody cheated, it was the lazy prof. I could give him the exact same lecture he just gave the students. 'Physically ill, absolutely disgusted, etc." This guy and those like him are an embarrassment to the profession. Put forth a little effort for crying out loud.
@gameshowfan1982 Can you please be my professor? ALL my "professors" use test bank material, and I can't help but look at the test bank when my friend has one. I'm not learning shit in this "university". Waste of money.
@gameshowfan1982 The case here is definitely about cheating students. For crying out loud, we should highlight on that part. I will never back these students as if they didn't do anything wrong. Shame on them!
@gameshowfan1982 Just because he has a belly and doesn't change the answers to his exams every semester doesn't mean he's lazy. There are multiple ways to cheat for virtually any exam, as any avid cheating enthusiast knows.
We know nothing of this professor's history of research in his field over the years, and we know nothing of the time or energy he spends preparing for and delivering his lessons.
Let's not accuse our colleagues without just cause.
First of all, fuck this guy! These pompous, arrogant, d bag teachers are the worst. This dude is making this out to be the crime of the century. Some kids cheated on a test, they are forced to retake it so just end it. This guy gives a lecture as if they are war criminals.
LAZY professors and teachers use test banks. Period. I've been teaching quite some time and ALWAYS make up my OWN questions. This takes a LOT of time, but I feel it is the RIGHT thing to do.
I would study the test bank questions regardless for the new exam...it would be a great review.

Median pay $70,400 and top pay is well over $100,000. You think someone making this type of money could come up with a 50 question test per semester.
The fact that the students took it for granted that a mass produced test bank would be used is pretty pathetic.
Just changing the test once a year would likely cause enough uncertainty per semester that no one would chance using an old test answer sheet.

Don't you use a test bank?

that's the result when publishers provided a one-stop shop- complete with test-banks and the professors don't have to work in creating test for what they taught. this is one lesson the educational system must take note of. way to goo professor!

People study from test bank all the time, that's how tutoring agencies and publishers make money off desperate students. Test bank is study material. The prof should blame himself for letting the students figuring out that he's being lazy and grabbing questions from a bank than making the questions up on his own.

MayfielderOSU 3 months ago
@MayfielderOSU To prove that the person cheated, the professor would demand them to take the test, and if they scored high the first time and scored low the second time, they cheated because they only knew the material on the 700 question word bank and not the actual material from the class.
kochacola018 3 months ago
@kochacola018 if you take two different tests, the difficulty cannot and will not be the same. This is called STATISTICS and in no way does if constitute cheating if you do worse on one of the tests. If the students had access to the tests by way of LEGAL means, this is not considered cheating. Since every class I've ever taken uses a text book where the publisher creates test banks; the professors know that we know about this and have access to them.
MayfielderOSU 1 month ago
@MayfielderOSU Do you know much an attorney costs? I doubt an average college student could afford both the attorney and the tuition.

Your imaginary ideas about "physical proof" are adorable btw.
sporkenvader 4 months ago
Unless they can physically prove the students cheated they cannot punish them. The risk of punishing an innocent student far outweighs punishing the far larger number of cheaters.
Secondly a professor cannot simply choose to change the weighting or force a repeat exam, they are bound by the syllabus. Unless all students are in agreement the professor cannot simply flex their muscle into doing what they want.
corymcneil 4 months ago
What an idiot teacher. The students didn't sign anything excluding them from using test bank questions. Test bank questions are often distributed from old textbook editions.
7777penda 4 months ago
Sorry, prof., this ISN'T cheating. I had an economic prof. who posted a link to the test bank for his class...why? It isn't possible to memorize the answer to 600+ questions. The only "advantage" we had was that we knew the TYPE of questions & the types of "trick" questions, but I had to study. My English Prof. thinks there's cheating in the class, but its just lazy students using SparkNotes & some quizzes its easier to get by on that than on other quizzes.
RealAgentOfSHIELD 4 months ago
It's how college go's. It's not High school in an sense. If this as one or two students it wouldn't have been such a big deal to the rest but with the majority of 600 students? They couldn't have dealt with it better.
LauraLynneDevine30 4 months ago
@LauraLynneDevine30 well wouldn't he deserve this to happen to him for being lazy. To not make up a new test that had nothing to do with an old one. I feel that it's not cheating looking at old test for studying, but if the prof is lazy than I guess its considered cheating
sharkshockey19 3 months ago
You know, I agree fully that cheating is a massive slap in the face to a professor, and my heart goes out to Prof. Quinn, but that being said, he couldn't bluff his way out of a wet paper bag. Since in all my years of the schooling infrastructure I HAVE NEVER seen or ever thought to get a study guide from a publisher, or anywhere- I feel the students are also to blame. They clearly didnt study or they wouldnt be mad and just take the test over. still sucks

musicalmike235 10 months ago
@musicalmike235 : The typical university policy on academic dishonesty is an immediate failing grade in the course in question, and often immediate ejection from the university.
Now, consider the facts: Whether you cheated or not you have to retake the test. Statistical analysis can't eliminate all false positives (someone who didn't cheat being identified as a cheater). The penalty is only 4 hours of lectures. Even if you *didn't* cheat it might make sense to say you did.
