Hail Mary, Full of Grace the Lord is with Thee! Blessed art Thou among women and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb JESUS Holy Mary, Mother of God Pray for us sinners Now and at the hour of our death. Amen+ The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to thy word And the Word was made Flesh. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary!
Would love to hear the behind the scenes stuff that is only shown in this video. It would be fascinating to hear what goes into creating such a performance!
So, there are career tracks for professional musicians in the military. You could spend 20 years in the army and never see combat. Chanticleer are professional musicians.
Stumbled on this video today after watching Chanticleer's "Cells Planets" video. Though not Catholic, I love the musicality of Biebl's Ave, it is breathtaking. As a native of Annapolis and a USNA alum, I can appreciate what the young men in the GC go through and give up to be as dedicated to their singing as they are. Beautiful job! So much hard work and sacrifice. What an honor for them to sing with Chanticleer. Opportunity of a lifetime. Thanks for posting!

Impressive from any point of view- professional or not.....amateur means FOR THE PURE LOVE OF THE ART....and these beautiful men with such a pure sound...nothing better.
Sometimes WHO is singing makes the performance incredible, regardless of WHAT or HOW they sing. For this reason, I think this is the most effective performance of this piece I have heard.
@cellist2010 IMO the conductor here wisely decided to keep it moving because the acoustic is pretty dry in this space. There's no church reverb to help them achieve an effortless, floating quality. If the tempo had been slower, the amateur singers' phrasing and tuning would almost certainly have suffered; I really don't think it would have sounded good. IMO the shaping/phrasing here is refreshingly dynamic and at an emotional level it really delivers. Slower wouldn't necessarily guarantee truer.
@cellist2010 Have you heard them live? When I heard them live they certainly took some risks with extreme tempi (fast and slow), but IMO they pulled them all off. Quite a few of their performances on Youtube are in TV studios (e.g. the not altogether successful performance of the Copland 'God Rest Ye Merry...') and similar acoustically dire spaces where the group is at the mercy of the sound engineer - I can completely understand why they would err on the side of brisk in those circumstances...
This performance is amazing...fuelled with passion, sensitive, laced with responsiveness and clarity. For the stupid people picking holes in the performance, please get a life and stop living up to the steriotype.
@donaldrose are you stupid? Civilian supplemental is demeaning...Chanticleer is THEE professional choir of america. Any men's chorus in the U.S. claiming to have better blend then those selected by Matt Oltmann(Chanticleer's music director) is automatically wrong. Even the king's singers of england aren't quite comparable to this "supplemental" (dominant) choir on stage left.
I take it that here Chanticleer were singing the trio parts and the Glee Club were the quartet. MAJOR RESPECT to the Glee Club, because the blend is terrific and the GC must have worked really hard to match Chanticleer's purity and sweetness of tone across the range so well. I think the tempo is fine in that acoustic, it's not a church. Lovely balance (bar the final chord, but that was the conductor's fault), great dynamics, FAB crescendo in the coda; and how focused and responsive the Navy are!
This is a wonderful performance of Biebl's "Ave Maria". Thank you for posting this. I would've loved to hear this live. People who have only negative comments are those who fit into the category of "critic" - those who cannot do what people who perform do - they do only what is in their capacity to do - to find faults in order to make them feel better about themselves. Do not listen to them. This is a fantastic performance. Bravo!
Lovely singing. The cutting back and forth between rehearsal and performance video was unusual. I wondered where the scruffy guys went and how the guys in tuxes got there. Maybe I am just a little dense...
The University of Kentucky Men's Chorus did this song at the Christmas concert and I love the way they did it. However, I've found that every group I listen to who sings this song has done it wonderfully, causing me to get chills down my spine.
I think it's wonderful. Also, I think that people shouldn't judge the singers. Rather, they should appreciate and revel in their beautiful voices and the haunting melody of Biebl's Ave Maria.
WOW, I had hills this is one of my favorite Ave Maria songs. With this many voices I think the choir carried the tone very well, it could have been softer in some areas but man I loved it. I played it over and over again and again. Looking at the guys was easy on the eyes too! WOW what hunks!!!
One last thing, keep in mind that the little bit of pitch variance is the difference between a 12 person group and a 50+ person group like this one. Sorry for the long-windedness. =) Once again, I enjoyed this performance.
I love the way the video kept flashing back and forth.
It does not matter if some of the singers were Midshipmen going on to careers in the Navy or Marine Corp or Chanticleers they will treasure this experience for a lifetime.
God bless the Navy Marine Corp team!!!!!! God bless and keep the men and women serving in uniform wherever they are.
@rbensonmtp I am a Navy Veteran who is now a Music educator and I worked with a lot of the Men and Women that graduated from that fine institution. the do not have the Music dept. one would like but they make up for it in deddication and desire. They also perform all over the country.
"zippy", this is a group of young men carrying an extraordinarily heavy academic load at the academy. To expect them to excel in music as well is more than one might expect. Ever hear of a musical curriculum at at military academy? These are men in training to serve their country; and I give them credit for performing in this ostensibly extracurricular discipline. God bless them.
@NlandC <Shrug> I was a music major up until this past December (Master's in Choral Conducting, *finally.* No need to be so defensive, Zippy's critique isn't agreed upon by all musicians. For example, I know very few conductors that prefer a top-heavy group as opposed to a bottom-heavy one(in truth I don't know any at all). This sound may not be perfectly accurate pitch-wise, but it by no means "spoils the chords." This group ahs a pretty strong sound, actually. Enjoyed the performance.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the glee club in general lacks the full-bodied sound and they only sound at the loud passages.... the higher voices ( the ones singing the melody in particular) sound especially weak making the choir sound bottom- heavy which should be the other way round .... the weak sound that the top voices have makes their high notes inaccurate and spoils the chords...
@zippyninny Thanks for your input Zippy. Noted. You seem to forget, however, that these are not professionals, nor are they scholarship choral, not even music majors. The Naval Academy doesn't offer music scholarships. Nor do they offer a single music class. These are Warriors preparing to lead men into combat who are given the privelidge to band together to sing traditional choral music during the little free time they are granted, before they protect the likes of you. Thanks Einstien
@ingramlove not that you should have had to say that, but well put. Kinda curious to know what Zippy wrote though. Then again, who cares- I'd rather click "repeat" then search for Zippy.
@ingramlove That not quite right either, Mr Snottyhead. The military does have a music school. 'Last I knew, it was a combined forces music school and one from any service, if they're good enough, can do their entire service as a musician. At Little Creek, Virginia. Do you really think military band members practice their instruments while cleaning their guns?
@goholom Wrong again. The school you reference is for the profeessional Enlisted musisians that the sevices recruit, audition and employ as paid musicians for their career. Again, the chorus in this video is comprised of college students training to be naval officers, to command ships submarines, pilot aircraft or lead Marines. service academies have no school or even a class on music. Certainly no music majors. The students sing as a hobby after school. Try again goholom.
@zippyninny .... let me put in terms you can understand. Name ONE collegiate intramural glee club in the world that tops these boys......... remember the rules Einstein, must be intramural. No music majors. Take your time to form your answer. You get credit for students that carry an average of > 24 semester hours.
@zippyninny Some choral directors love that bottom heavy sound. 'Like pumping up the bass when listening to pop music. I also agree that the top, particularly solos are weak. Two separate videos combined here. One a workshop, with guys not in uniform. Im assuming this is a rehearsal, maybe soloists are "saving" their voices? Finally, an intelligent criticism of the music direction does NOT have anything to do with one's sense of patriotism. So sorry you have to suffer the insufferable.
