I have never seen nor heard of this song, but it's SO out there! Bizarre, unique, nothing quite like it before or since. Leave it to Annie! She is an artist on ALL levels.
@tall32guy I do too. It's amazing see how free a woman can be when she just lets go. I guess this video is very relateable to many people because we all know stressed and unhappy women in our lives who we wish they could just find themselves and have a moment of freedom. I know I do, my mother and my grandmother. One bears the weight of the entire family's problems on her shoulders, and the other one works what seems to be an endless job.
@MyidolGwen Too bad you didn't experience the 80's first hand. 80's music is still the best - 90's came close - 00's paled in comparasion - 10's are an embarrassing joke. So, I would take the 'different' interior decorations and great music, over lack luster music of today.
@fvalen001 There's good music today, you just have to find it. The overall vibe in the 80's was just the best: creative music with melody and rhythm, colorful style and it was all a lot of fun. People can only shadow that, today.
This video and song were playing on a massive projection screen the very first time I went to a night club at age 18 - watching this brought the whole night flooding back - the detail of conversations, friends I haven't thought about in years, the bouncer checking my ID, everything. Oh, the eighties, nineties, and my youth - where did youse all go.....???!!
@hannahhazlehurst Just look at it this way. Do a little history, it's all there for the taking on whatever format, and there are many retro stations playing 24/7. The one thing, as a DJ, growing up in 70s & 80s, was, you had to wait for things to come out or be released. Now, you not only have the original cuts, but remastered, digital, and remixes. It's quite fascinating, if not expensive.
Its silly to compare singers groups and so-forth. Its all a matter of opinion. What one person thinks a singer or group to be the best and most talanted, Another may think just the opposite.
This is from 1988's Savage album. A breath of synth air after two albums of rock and roll. In the early 80s, the Eurythmics dropped their cool synth sound for good ol' rock. I loved them and was worried but when Savage came out it really told a story........ and the story is............ The rock stuff was Dave Stewart's idea. Savage was Annie's and it can be argued that Savage was her first solo album.
It's amazing how Annie captured the characters' traditional looks based on their voices, like charicatures of American female stereotypes. I wish more people considered her as a role-model for young talent.
Gosh, Music was Grand then "Golden" I was Dreaming like a Texan Girl, A girl who thinks she got the right to everything! Classic Like no Others -jzebraa 2011
any superlative is invidious, but A. Lennox was quite probably the most beautiful woman of the twentieth century - the other contender was Tatjana Patitz, who was not also talented
@1hayes1 Im happy to agree with u re Annie, such exquiste bone structure but i wud add Isabella Rossellini to both the beautiful & talented list! I love her quirky role in the 90s movie "Death Becomes Her".
this is what happens to the average housewife stuck with doing the same mudane chores day after day.they're bound to go a little beserk-o at some point, and then watch out baby!
Love the song. Bookmarked it a while ago. Of course that doesn't work now.
Is Vevo the only commercialized, propaganda-ized means of seeing any good videos anymore? Or is there something where the video appears even smaller amongst all the marketing crap?
Only Annie Lennox could mock both the glamor which modern culture puts on a pedestal, and its opposite extreme with such intelligence and humor. And still look stunning doing it.
@RainPoetry The Savage album is brilliant, each song was actually released with a video-hunt around if dont have n wud like a copy it is online . Shame is 1 of my fav songs on the album
@battleship1969 shame is my 2nd favourite eurythmics song [love is a stranger being 1st]. it was released as a single but failed to chart.the shame vd is amazing
I like that camera pan up the staircase with pounding beat. The other day I thought about the significance of title. Then I recalled Annie spoke of girl and boy first meeting in cafe. Perhaps upon meeting in introduction the boy said, "I love to . . ." and she said, "listen to . . .", and the woman in the nearby booth overhearing clumsy conversation added, "Beethovan!"
Eurythmics videos was like watching a David Lynch film they used to kind of scare me wonderfully as a kid, but I couldn't stop watching like a train wreck. Anne Lennox & Dave Stewart were ahead of their time and made some fascinatingly, interesting experimental music videos.
I remember in 87 when this came out, it took me a couple of weeks to figure it out... but it's pretty simple. At the end of the video, that's a PRISON she's leaving.....
"I have never really understood the song or music video. But I've always loved it, for all its creepiness."
i remember watching all the music vid channels, they would always play "I need a man" right after this video to keep the vibe going, Eurythmics are it.
People forget how groundbreaking some of the Eurythmics videos were. We never saw music videos quite like this before. And Annie took to the visual narratives well. She's a very clever actress above her exceptional vocal and songwriting abilities.
@Lastchancers Eurythmics videos was like watching a David Lynch film they used to kind of scare me wonderfully as a kid, but I couldn't stop watching like a train wreck. Anne Lennox & Dave Stewart were ahead of their time and made some fascinatingly, interesting experimental music videos.
It's like the unruly child and the drag queen were parts of her inner self, dying to come out. It also seemed like the nervous breakdown of an inhibited housewife. Genius!
They actually released all of the videos together as a "musical film" - one song leading into the next, with Annie portraying multiple personalities. It's a great little movie and Annie Lennox proves to be a wonderful actress.
I remember when I was kid this song came about in the states when rap blew up this song was the death of the eurythmics in the states, but it is and always will be one of my favourite eurythmic songs. ////////////////i love you Miss Annie, now and forever!
Downloading couple of songs onto my Ipod including this one that I have NOT seen the vid in AGES! While I was watching, is that a young Natalie Portman who is the little girl behaving MAAAADDDD but I think its not.
I just love Annie's personas, characters, wigs and personalities and expressive faces. Did I leave anything out? :) She would have made a great actress, I think but I am glad she didn't get the acting bug and made great music instead. She is simply amazing and humorous too.
"Beethoven (I Love to Listen To) has a driving pulse and sonics perfect for any time.
"Savage" is my favourite album, I think. Seeing these videos, designed for it, is something I'll return to and savor often. Eurythmics is/are a fantastic team, brilliant artists - this incredible montage/storywho
What I get from the video is that Annie is playing a simple house hife who seems stuck in here day to day activities (the cleaning, cooking and knitting). The we see the kid and "drag queen" who represent parts of the real house wife. Finally they all come together and we see annie in the sorta "diva" attire walking out and destroying what she was trapped in. This then moves on to the "I Need A Man" video where she performs as this new inner character.
The album was a "concept" album. All the songs were about a women going crazy, or insane. This is the first song on it. The video fits the concept. The "blonde" women is also in the "I Need A Man" video.
It isn't about anything really that I know of. LOL I don't think they had in mind for it to mean anything. The video however puts a story to the song (even if it's an "out there" one. LOL)
It's about a bored housewife wanting attention from her husband, her kids, life...whatever! She has given up everything and she is a VOID...so she SNAPS! This vid was so WAY ahead of it's time of what most unappreciated housewives now feel in life. Beethoveen was all about passion in life, Lust, sex passion.
