  • this is my favorite horror movie

  • What an amazing film! Great part played by kurt Russell! Some nice cheesy bits also, love the part when Bennings starts to turn and they say, " it's Bennings!" and they all run without saying anything! Lol lol love it!

  • There was also a 1950 version..

  • @nairad100 1951 :)

  • dudes what about the new movie in 2011? remake or wat

  • @lamees122 Prequel. It shows what happened at the other camp.

  • by far the scariest horror film of the world

  • I rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH.

  • @RickyChops Tbh i prefer the game =) this is to old !!!

  • (I mean) Thumbs up if you played this on PC (Sorry for my bad english)

  • Thumbs up if you played this in PC ^^

  • this is not the original. original was made in 1951.

  • Way ahead of it's time in 1982. The strapped-to-the-next-chair scene was terrifying.

  • This is a great film. The special effects were terrific for 1982 and I think they are better than the computer generated graphics of the modern age. The whole feel of the film is great. The unknown, isolation, fear, terror, just a classic horror movie .I was very impressed by Curt Russel's acting in this movie. I don't understand critics, most of them disliked this movie. This is one of my favorites science fictions of all time.

  • Such a great film. It inspired a whole new genre of "body" horror. Between this and the Aliens films we get most of the inspiration for modern horror sci-fi.

  • @WhiskiWolf It didn't "inspire" body horror. You can't seriously talk about the Thing "inspiring" body horror and not mention that Eraserhead or Shivers came years before The Thing and Alien were a even daydream in Carpenter or Scott's heads.

The Thing is good movie but it is not the only movie ever made and it is not the inspiration of "modern horror sci-fi" - and what does that even mean anyhow? The genre that has only one movie in it called Event Horizon, a movie that was a piece of shit?

  • one of the best sci-fi horror movies

  • whenever they see two of the same person they should jus kill both. sacrifice one for many

  • @mrzachattackf

There is no two of the same people. It takes over your body and it becomes you.

  • Scared the living daylights out of me, and I had already read the Short story!

  • I can't believe this almost ruined Carpenter's career. Lumberjack beards do battle with a flesh shredding monster from one of those strange, glittering stars dotting the polar night sky? AND they use flamethrowers? Are scientists who unwind playing pinball and ping pong in the rec room? The main character has a sombrero, doctor a nose ring, other doc comes unglued after watching an Atari simulation about Doomsday? Rupturing Huskies? UFOs in creepy ice cave-workshops? The '82 masses were clueless

  • @chainbluelightning1

Well it came out at the same time as ET and bad timing is what killed it.

  • i fear the prequel this year will suck

  • @kabal5000 Oh it will trust me.

  • @flootisboy65 no way i dont trust you

  • one of the best movies ever!!! way better than the shit they put out today

  • by far still one of the best horror movies ever

  • Frigging love that movie. Trailer was top also. And I like the VHS as well.

  • the original the thing in black and white was a very cool movie i liked it just as much as this version because carpenter didnt do a bad job on this remake in fact this is one of the few remakes i dont mind watching because it was done so good

  • @Amonthered

Some of your fave movies could be remakes did you know that without even knowing? Do you think it's ok to remake a movie that was hokey in the first place, not terribly well-known or not beloved or is dated in style and pacing? the original Thing was good but didn't have the time or technology to do it justice back then and Carpenter improved on the effects and execution.

  • @Johnlindsey289 yeah i have thought about that and there could be remakes out there that were better than the original , and john carpenter did a really good job on the thing which is why i didn't complain but there are some movies out there that are remade that kind of take away the nostalgia of a original movie and i know carpenter didn't do that

  • @Amonthered

And did Carpenter honored the original movie with his love for the original movie? he did grew up with the original movie when he was a kid and was hired for the job and he did paid respect to the original in a fresh updated kind of way.

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • Screw E.T. This is where it's at.

  • I remember watching this back in the day when I was young with my Mom! We both got so scared from this film!! Lol! :))

  • Great movie to watch during the winter season.Just don't forget to turn off the lights(and have that pistol lying on your lap).

  • they should have re-wrote this to be ALIEN 3 and throw in a new element mysterious to drive paranoia. would have worked better than what it became.

  • Halloween was a good remake.

  • Gosh I have to watch this! I saw the original and despite all the technological set backs I absolutely loved it...and this remake looks like it eliminates those cons !

  • watch full edition of this particular video right here in avatz..net change .. to .

  • I thought this film would be scary it was not!!! dissapointed

  • I have to say that this movie is a classic of horror if only due to the excellent work that was with "the thing" as far as visuals and props go as it was done all pre cg and managed to be imaginative and scarily real looking.... gotta love good work

  • Don't forget to play the sequel: The Thing!

  • @asian95drag0n

It's not a sequel. That game is full of crap. I refuse to acknowledge that as a sequel of any kind.

  • This is not a remake,. dumbs. This is a CONTINUATION from the original movie.

  • @darthsinister

No this one is not. This movie follows the short story Who Goes There more than the original Thing from Another World.

It has no relation to that movie other than the title.

  • (Continued) Back then, at that time when ET and The Thing were in the theaters, the two movies were kind of in competition with each other

  • I have the whole DVD on JC's The Thing along with the entire cast's interviews and the commentary with JC and Kurt Russell. I grew up in the '80's and when The Thing was released in 1982, it didn't turn out to be a great hit movie and a lot of it had to do was because ET was released just one year earlier and most of the attention went towards ET more so then The Thing whereas now, the new generation of movie goers love it, it's just a sign of the times, but it's pretty ironic.

  • the game dead space was inspired by this

  • Ive seen The Thing close to 70 times, and unbelievably I'm still in awe of how much of an amazing film this is. Not only is it a perfect horror, but a perfect movie.

  • The ORIGINAL Thing was done in 1951, NOT the John Carpenter movie -

here's a little info, you'll note it did have a lady in the movie- The Thing from Another World (1951)

    Rated 3.5 out of 5.0

Directed by Christian Nyby. Starring James Arness, Robert Bray, Margaret Sheridan.

  • The fact that this trailer looks as though it was ripped from a video cassette makes it so much better.

  • @Byrnzi360 It was... :-)

  • @Byrnzi360

I was 14 when this was released and it taught me an early lesson = never listen to critics. This film got totally panned when it came out yet I thought then and still do that it was a fuckin masterpiece, one of the best films of the genre i ever saw - indeed its high up on my best "ever"! I did wonder what it was with me back then that not only really liked but also rated so highly as "a film" that no-one else seemed to get. I guess it was because I never saw ET that year...

  • Why is this film regarded as a bad film everywhere?! almost anyone i tell that i like this film they laugh at me for my poor taste. Ok it may not be a classically good film, but everyone sould respect their own opinions.

  • @betty100ful whaaa, really? JC's The Thing is my favorite horror movie and is most definitely a cult classic.

  • Only one director can be trusted to remake this, David Fincher.

  • Best John Carpenter movie ever. hands down. I remember watching this when I was little and it scared the hell outta me.

  • I use to think making a Thing 2 would be cool :) BUT with the way re-makes, Disney actors and CGI dominates the cinemas these days! I think it would be a bad idea

  • @Fender1976uk Only things Hollywood seams to be currently releasing are re-makes of successful foreign films, or re-makes of old movies. Also they seam to be releasing lots of tv shows adaptations and comic book super heroes.

    =======

For anyone that liked or disliked Quarantine watch the original from Spain named REC. and the 2nd part REC 2. so many examples to mention too little letters allowed to type.

  • @Fender1976uk just look at how well the gore was done in Piranha 3D. If another Thing movie was done like that...then there is hope.

  • Piranaha 3D shocked me! I thought it was going to be real bad but it was just like an 80's movie, if that makes sense! you had a likeable cast! and Elisabeth Shue plays a mum!!! I'm getting old!! :) I did find some of the gore abit too graphic at times, leaving it to the imagination is never a bad thing. I'm glad Micahel Bay didn't get his hands on this project!!

  • @Fender1976uk I know there was CGI used for the 3D bits and the piranha themselves, but it looked like a lot of the gore was done the traditional prosthetic way. I don't think the gore in the Thing was over-the-top as in Piranha 3D, but I do think the prequel will need to make similar use of prosthetics to be successful.

  • What was so cool about the original Thing was that guy who made all those real live creature effects. I hope they bring that back and add CGI for bits that really need it. A good cast will be the most important thing, I don't know who they have in mind for the new film? only thing I read somewhere is that have talked about having women in the cast

  • @Fender1976uk I've always said that one of the reasons The Thing was so effective is that it was an all male cast. There aren't any love interests, no heroine that overcomes adversity ala Ripley or Laurie Strode. With no females it focuses almost entirely on the situation, on the paranoia and the events that unfold. Another good example of another movie that employs this kind of idea is Das Boot. There are women in the movie, but during the bulk of the film, its an all male crew.

  • @sharpnickelz So you are going to tell me Aliens(2) was not good because there was a hint of love interest between Hicks and Ripley? Dude you are fucking brain dead. That movie rocked PERI_fuckin_ID. Your statement has no merit or ground to stand on.

  • @darthsinister Did I say Aliens was not good? Point out where I said it wasn't good. My point was, The Thing was more scary because there wasn't any female cast. Theres no levity with an all male cast. The humor is dry. There is not womanly comfort, no love interest to give the audience some hope. Just the dire situation. You can almost taste the fear coming from the crew. The Thing and Aliens, two totally different focal points. I think it works well in JC's The Thing.

  • @sharpnickelz Love how people have to insult to prove their point. Sheesh. IMO a person must be "brain dead" if he/she has to take the low road by trying to insult someones intelligence.

  • Just read some info, they do have a cast :) Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Dennis Storhoi, some Norwegian actors in there which is cool, don't get people in with dodgy accents :)

  • I'm slow!! the film has already been made!! its being edited now and will be released 2011

  • This was also a horror remake/rip off of "A COLD NIGHT'S DEATH," with Robert Culp, TV movie. The thing even uses some of the same sets.

  • Nosia, such as car, boat or motion sickness, often induces unexpected vomiting. Such was the case when I watched this movie in a theatre. No CG to be found here. Only gut turning, red gelantanatious, chest bursting, skin popping terror in the middle of an inexscapable swath of nowhere, USA.

  • @Buckeyecat2002 L - O - L ! ! !

  • this movie still scares me hell out, its just the idea if just small microscope size cell of "thing" gets touch on other lands then whole earth is fucked up.

  • Just imagine for those of you have seen it or not think of the possible concequences that if this'Thing' or Alien creature were to be real. Mankind could be wiped out. 'The Thing' directed by John Carpenter was based on a book 'Who's is there?'. Movie is Scary but fiction. Make believe.

  • Kurt Russel stares in the thriller action movie 1982 'The Thing'. A far distant Alien creature have invaded Earth infecting a crew of scientist. Its survives by imitating any life form it touches espially humans. This 'Thing' cannot die by man-made firearms but instead Fire it's afraid of. Kurth Russel as Mcfee saves the left over crew by killing the Alien by a flame thrower and saves Earth from this invasion.

  • the guy who played the sergant in modern warfare 2,arbiter in halo 2,3 and captain anderson kieth david is in it

  • I thought this film was great because it was a) better than the original film b) followed the short story closer and c) also borrowed from HP Lovecraft's 'At The Mountains Of Madness' a bit - especially when they find the Norwegian camp all trashed. Nothing gets close to this film...

  • The remake or prequel will suck simply because of Political Correctness and CGI.

  • @Stigmableedingblack

and i suppose you think this movie was politically incorrect right? today's shockers like Hostel and all that broke the barriers

  • One of my favorite movies.

  • man is the safest place to hide

  • LOL Look at that split second scene with Palmer @ 1:24......I think that was a deleted scene.....an alternate Palmer transformation.

If you don't think this movie is scary, you have no reason to fear any other movie........Period.

  • @AceofDlamonds this & the exorcist fucking creeped & scared the shit out of me.

  • me too..those are on my top ten scares.

  • This and Alien are still the best Horror movies to this day.

Fuck Saw, Scream and the Ring, They all suck.

    These movies were amazing!.

  • Seeing the trailer's better than seeing the movie.

  • old school

  • best horror movie

  • I hope I CAN ever watch this movie. If it doesn't scare me, than I consider it simply a thriller movie.

  • I thought this movie was as scary as, if not scarier, than Alien.

Blood and intense gore. shivers up your spine. Great movie.......great. Better than great.....superb

  • This movie isn't scary at all.

  • CLASSIC

  • I Always Wondered What Happened To Childs And Macready At The End!!!!! But, a Prequel About The "Swed's" Would Be Excellenttttttttt!!!!!!! The Thing #1 Sci - Fi Movie Besides Alien/Aliens Hands Down!

  • Checkout "A Cold Night's Death" (1973)

( TV) on You Tube and see how Carpenter ripped off the the forgotten TV flick.

  • one of my top 10 horror flicks. very underrated flick too. the efx were nuts.

  • now i understand why this movie was on a tv in the movie halloween john carpenter's halloween john carpenter's thing hahaha

  • Yes they are in the works right know for a Prequel can't what for that and also they may be still going for PHANTASM 5 as well. The THING to me is one of the best scary Sci Fi ever. BLADE RUNNER will go down in the history books.

  • are you sure they are making another "thing" ?.....that would be awesome !!!

  • oh god what a great movie. in my opinion theonly sci-fi horror thats better than this is aliens (the second one) event horizon is right behind this one.

  • "Man is the warmest place to hide" what is it traing to tell us that?

  • I hope that the prequel will rely more on physical effects rather than forcing CGI for everything. I loved the physical effects in the first movie, it gave it a more gross and realistic feel.

  • Prequel?!

  • yeah, there was talk about a new Thing movie. Instead of a sequal, it's supposed to be a prequel for the events at the Norwegian base where the alien was found.

  • cool, I will so watch that if it comes out.

  • @psbox362 CG is one of a few big reasons that modern movies suck. Right below it being the fact that fight scene's (atleast in american films) no longer are choreographed by martial artists that know how to fight. It's all a bunch of fast cuts and sloppy fighting.

  • wow for an old horror film that looks pretty intense

  • This is the most underrated movie in the entire world to me.

    * I was born in 1995, and I can't stop watching this movie. I appreciate the amount of creative gore they threw in this flick. The story line is good too.

  • Good for you man. I saw this when it came out and the effects are still impressive..

    Great cast.

Anybody remember the behind scenes of The Things tv episode on USA's Nightflight way back then?

  • I WAS BORN IN 1995 TOO!!!!

  • This is prob the only trailer that can still give me the creeps! To say nothing of the film, which still scares the hell outta me too!

  • Man is the warmest play to hide ... that line send's chill in to my bone's .

  • "Yeah well fuck you too!"-Mac

  • i saw this on CBS in the mid 80's and it scared the living shit out of me!

  • No there is NO REMAKE OF THIS FILM they are talking about a PRELUDE to this film its on FANGORA WEBSITE . Yes I am sick of CGI but I did here that they are making a remake of BLADERUNNER WTF sad is the best word to put it. So sick of this remake crap to me I can just set down and watch PHANTASM I hope they come out with Part 5.

  • @vetec4

Some of your favorite movies are remakes did you know that? do you think it's ok to remake a movie that isn't terribly well known or not very beloved in the first place or was a piece of crap? how come you don't shit on remakes like this and The fly?

  • The remake will suck. All horror remakes suck. Name me a horror remake that doesn't suck.

  • Ummm... The Thing is a remake! LOL...

The remake that is going into production is actually going to be a prequel set in the Danish camp of scientists.

  • Oh, I'm fully aware that the movie is a remake of "The Thing From Another World", but mentioning that would have overcomplicated my post. More importantly, the two films have almost nothing in common with each other apart from a dangerous shapeshifting alien. Style, mood, gore level- all different.

  • The origin ist the short story "who goes there", a novella by John W. Campbell, Jr. and "the thing" from 1982 is a more faithful adaptation of the novella than the crappy 50'ies flick.

    See:

    (en.wikipedia)

    --> "Who Goes There?"

--> "The Thing from Another World"

    --> "The Thing (film)"

  • @fraught you mean Norwegian? lol.

  • @fraught Danish or Norwegian?

  • @fraught Danish? you meen the Norweigan camp? :D

  • @wesc08 I stand corrected. ;-)

  • Oh please, I don't like being called Danish..

  • name just about any remake period that doesnt suck...

  • Ummm The Thing, The Departed, Dawn of the Dead, The Fly,...

  • JIMMY!!!!!

  • @fraught the original The Thing and The Fly actually sucked! The remakes were masterpieces.

  • @chickenz666 this one

  • @chickenz666 Scarface, Last House on the Left, The Blob, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre are all great remakes IMO.

  • @chickenz666 ....its a prequel!!!!!!!!!!!!! you guys really piss me off

  • @ArcaneAzmadi yeah the thing is a remake of the original one which was like made in 1952

  • @ReconMarine012 But the original never followed the story very well. The Thing is based off of a short story written in 1938/39. This 1982 version follows it pretty exact.

  • @ArcaneAzmadi

    YOU! You fool!

  • @ArcaneAzmadi Remakes tend to be hit or miss on how good they are mainly due to a ready made comparison for them already being available and I will say while some remakes really miss the mark a few still shoot far above their predecessors

  • @ArcaneAzmadi The Thing from 1982 does not

  • The best horror film ever made by far... just hope the remake is just as good.

  • you would have thought it was made in the 70`a not 80`s

  • 81 i think

  • this is an amazing horror movie

  • Incredible movie. You never see anything like this in modern cinema.

  • I love the puppeteering that dominated special effects. The melting faces, the creatures shooting out of heads, classic

  • You are so right man, I always tell people this is one of my fav movies because this before compurter graphs took over and just like wow how did they do that and now you know its all done in a computer, but even when I warch the bouns stuff on the dvd you still wonder how they do it. I miss that old movie term.. Movie Magic! They never make them like they used to and thats a shame Because its really scary after all these years.

  • i dont know if i would call it a horror movie , it didnt scare me enough , but the gore is surelly very good , ther werent alto much a gore senes trouout the movie but the ones that were in it were great , however for its age the movie is outstanding everbody watch it =)

  • yeah not so much horror as a kind of sci fi. the concept it chilling and the changes they made from the origional made it better im sick of these new remakes that all suck because they make the same movie but lamer with stupid hollywood personalities..

  • @TheBlomberFactory

Do you think it's ok to remake only bad movies or movies that aren't very well known or not beloved?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Well if you look at the kinds of remakes coming out I think it speaks for itself.

  • @TheBlomberFactory

Well The Crazies wasn't a very well known movie and got an excellent remake that did something new and fresh to the source like The Thing did. What do you think of The Crazies, Piranha 3D, Toolbox Murders, I Spit on Your Grave, 2001 Maniacs, Last House on The Left and My Bloody Valentine 3D? all good recent remakes of little known movies.

Do you put The Thing on the same level as Hostel or Saw when it comes to horror with gore that goes right for the jugular?

  • @Johnlindsey289 No The Thing is more sci fi but the special effect were still so great. I saw The Crazies (the remake) and I did not like it. I thought it was so cheesy and silly and the whole time I was just going to see how they got out of the crazy trap set by people who are obviously too insane to band together. It seems like I just have a problem with the plot but they could have made it good. Most of those I have not seen. Piranha 3D looked just awful and the original looks bad too.

  • @Johnlindsey289 and have you seen trick or treat? I hear it is good but I don't know about it

  • @TheBlomberFactory

It's great and do you think this movie is on the same level of Hostel when shocking people? going for the jugular kind of thing on gore.

  • @Johnlindsey289 The Thing? I think the gore in the thing was gross but it it's like alien gore sort of so you are not supposed to take it as seriously as a movie like Hostel I don't think you can take it as seriously... but seeing as I have never seen Hostel I can't really say for sure.

  • @reedeema I wouldn't call it "scary", but more so suspenseful and thrilling. Its very hard to make a horror movie genuinely scary for the modern crowds, but you can come very close by making it creepy, suspenseful and packed full of thrills.

  • @sharpnickelz wow my comment was over a year old lol but thx for yours ^^ and jeaa your right about that ... but i dont no i mean the movies these days lack of the suspence you were talking about and the creepyness , everything is so predictable nowdays , mhm the last good "horror movie " ivw wachted that i really enjoyed was hous of a thousand corpses

  • I've got the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone and that is equally as chilling as the film itself! What a film!!!

  • john arpenter is the best

  • the best thriller movie

  • it's one of your favourite trailers? this film is one of my favourite horror movies of all time =D

  • Pretty much my favorite movie ever. The atmosphere, the paranoia, the visceral gritty special effects. Hollywood can't even approach this quality nowadays.

  • Fuking greatest fil of all time!!

  • so... what does the thing look like'?

  • For the most part, like you or me. Sometimes, it looks like.....well, something horrible. It's not consistent. Which is why this movie fucking rocks.

  • oh, so it can change shapes?

  • Just, watch the movie. It's a great one.
