...And few people are aware that the little black guy playing the guitar behind him was every bit as great as Freddie King. Or Eric Clapton. The legendary Clarence "Gatemouth" brown.
I love Freddy but Clapton can stay right with him. Both are phenomenal and I am glad it is not in any way an either / or comparison. I can dig both and not feel conflicted whatsoever.
@rudemood2011 Your disgusting. It doesn't matter if your black or white, that language doesn't belong on a blues video. Go post your smut on a rap video.
@PBANDSNOW Hey now. A black man can call another black man a nigga and it's a compliment. Now if one of you crackers called me a nigga then that's racist. I like freedy. He was a cool nigga
@PBANDSNOW whoa whoa.. now i completely agree with the 1st part of that statement.. but shady is king of the rap game.. hip hop has no color anymore either.. as matter of fact the reason racism is still even an issue is cuz people like "rudemood" over here even bring it up
Before this clip I never knew that Rickenbacker made a hollow body bass At first I thought it was a 6 string which would have been a very odd choice for blues because they are so "jangly" sounding, but it turns out that bass player (right behind Freddie) has a Rickenbacker 4005. Very nice,
@Junk3t — I'm correcting myself. I just spotted the bass player with a Fender P-Bass, so that's a guitar behind Freddie and by the looks of it, it's a Rickenbacker 360. Like I said, a very odd choice for blues.
It's no wonder this guy was a major influence on Clapton, SRV & many others. Look at some of the footage of the Cream & see Eric playing a similar guitar!
@tsubureanman I couldn't tell from the video but I am just impressed that anybody else even knew Clarence Gatemouth Brown!! That dude was a freaking magician on the guitar!! Albert was not too shabby either!! And before anybody sends me hate mail...I was joking about Albert!! Dude was also magic!!
Pretty sure this bad has not only Freddie King, but Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (on guitar), and Billy Cox on bass. Spectacular! Freddie put a whammy on me!
One of the very first 45's I bought (before the Beatles came out) was "Jus' Pickin'" by freddie king on the Federal label. I played that record thru to the other side! And Lonnie Mack "Wham!" and "Memphis", and most of all "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs- Steve Cropper's guitar... ah, "those were the days, yes they were, those were the days".
My guitar teacher told me about 30 years ago, if you want to play the blues learn "Hideaway" by Freddie King. He was right, about 90% of all blues licks are in that song.
My good friend Isaac Scott (RIP) had all these tapes of "The Beat", it was a little local program out of Dallas, a black music show hosted by a (very hip) white guy! Note the guitar player right behind Freddie in front of the kick drum is another well-known Texan, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown.....!
cache seeker you are so right, I perform all the time and people always ask, who is the best etc. , But each style of music and each decade, for that matter has its greats, but urban blues, and all of the rock and roll artists up to today, owes big ups to the 3 Kings... I'm sick of people saying Clapton's got no delivery, and never lived the blues... really? Let's see how perky you are when you realize your sister's your mom, go through heroin and alcohol addiction, then live through the death of your only son, not to mention the death of peers. As far as Clapton's version not holding a candle to Freddy's, I actually agree, but the Beano version was still good, and stamped w/ Clapton's intense brand of lead playing. This is my opinion, don't crucify me.
@93IzzyH I read the book, but I knew all that stuff way before the book came out, as many fans did. Clapton's struggles in life were well-known by the time the book was published. For people to say he has no inner drive and just goes through motions is being very dismissive of a life most people wouldn't have the strength to survive.
That said, my real point was that Clapton can play the blues right up there w/ the greats, like Freddy. He's earned it both musically and personally.
Clapton didnt just copy this, he took it to another level IMHO.. and in spite of being white, he has suffered more blues in his life than most bluesmen. Freddie King was great though RIP
Guitar God Freddie King so talented yet so humble. Eric and the rest tried to copy but you cant play the blues like those who've suffered it. The blues masters will forever reign supreme.
Mr Freddie King Passed on in 1976 ! He was loved very much loved & not Forgotten by many ! Ask Mr. Clapton who was playing w/ him for a number of tears after Duane Allman Passed ! Look it up !
Freddy's album "Freddy King Sings" is THE ALBUM to have. This tune is not his best. Freddy has to SING to be appreciated. A clear bluesy voice with lots of soul.
Freddie King - most amazing blues originalist!! He taught many to play after him, like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and many others. See the version "Aint No Sunshine" he does on youtube.

@aleester seems like you´ve just red the book..

Thanks for the post!
