Haha, my ferret Merlin used to snorkel in his water bowl...even when there was nothing to get. It amused him greatly, but we had to ruin all the fun by putting a water bottle in there xD (He kept knocking it over).

Because of a natural oil in their skin. It's more of a musk than a stink. They have scent glands but they smell the same no matter what, the scent glands are just full of a gas they expel when frightened, like a skunk, except not so strong and not a liquid,

People think by removing the scent glands on a ferret that they will no longer 'smell'. A ferrets 'smell' (musky) has NOTHING to do with their scent glands. It's the oils in their skin, that makes their FUR smell. Ferrets will smell less when neutered, but you will not get rid of it completely. It isn't that bad anyway, u get used to it

they smell less if NO bedding is used. I have 3 in a 3 story wire cage- and they do not smell. Yes- a bit of musky, but it is not at all bad. The ferrets in pet stores stink because they are kept in the wrong kind of cage, bedding is used (that absorbs the stink- then distributes it throughout the room- LOL)

anyway- keeping their beds clean also helps,- I do my furball laundry 2x a month.

You dont use any bedding at all, or are you on about substrates? I use fleece flooring and hammocks.

I use a wire tiered cage lined with carpet pieces (discarded sample boards from a carpet store) and hammocks/ferret furniture. NO bedding whatsoever. :)

Ive had my 1 ferret for 3 years. His original buddy passed & then I adopted 3 more. I've only closed the door to their cage (with them in it) like 10x in the year. Ive supervised them enough to know what each one likes to get into & where each of their hiding/sleeping spots are. Every things ferret proofed.

I use to worry about leaving them out as they're so small & inquisitive. Not anymore. & Its truly the best feeling to know they can feel at the least bit free..as they should. :)

@Evalani22 Warning: LOOP carpet is very dangerous for ferrets. Not only does it snag claws, it can cause them to loose a toe. Likewise, but not as dangerous, fleece snags claws. Came home one day and my poor baby was sitting on the bottom of the cage with one paw up because a claw was snagged in fleece lined sleeve (hammock). No telling how long she was like that.

they get very bored if they are left in a cage alone. If ur honestly not at home a lot, think about getting two that way they have a companion. But they are expensive so they do sell these portable bags and leach for ferrets, that way you can bring it places with you.I bring my ferret to school all the time & it loves going shopping with me.

There is a bit more cleaning to do but other then that i had no problems with 2... i actually think its better to have 2 rather then one, this way when you are out they can keep eachother company. Just introduce them in the right way!

THe thing everyone loves about ferrets is that they are not boring at all. They are the most social, human friendly, adventurous and curious animal in the "small pets" category.  The only downside is that they also are one of the smelliest!

They are the best animals I have ever had, and I have had almost every animal known! A lot of work, yes, but worth it. Males are easier to train and are much more snuggly- Jack can't get enough snuggles, and Emily & Koko can't get enough play time- they only snuggle upon waking. They all have their own little quirky dispositions, each are EXTREMELY unique.

They are only smelly if you use shavings, which are TERRIBLE for their respiratory systems. No shavings=no smell. Wash their hammocks & blankets at least 2x a month and you will have NO SMELL. I have 3, and you would never know. People who come over are shocked when they see them, but don't smell them.
