What's interesting is that this song seems to draw heavily upon the chord progression and beat of Del Shannon's "Runaway" (known for its electric keyboard solo). Not only do I think this is intentional, but I think that they're trying to draw a deliberate comparison between the two songs.

In "Runaway" Del talks about a girl who left him under unknown circumstances. In "Next Best Thing" Nikki & Rich talk about a girl who left a guy and offer up an explanation.

The fact that they're acknowledging that the song is related to a far older one with an extremely similar sound is one thing (though far better than a lot of songs these days). The fact that they seem to tell what they think one modern day woman's reason for leaving the man in the Del's song is interesting. Kind of like someone referencing a scene from one movie in another in a bit of an homage, but with a twist.
