  • nooo poor harddrive, I felt sorry for it when you started railing it with the screwdriver..

  • RE: DESCRIPTION

You forgot the "blood" in "blood, sweat and tears"

  • Good thing that platter wasn't ceramic when you hit it with the hammer!

Also that was neat when you trailed the screwdriver across it. Reminded me of a woodturner's lathe almost.

  • you can float a neodymium magnet over the platter if it still spins

  • hmm, really? interesting idea to try out what happens, anyway, thanks!

  • @bionerd23 Most of the parts in a hard drive are non-magnetic due to the powerful neodymium magnets that help move the head

  • i hope you will get beaten as well once you will be dying !!

  • why'd the platter change from a dark color to almost white at 3:50 through 4:00?

  • because the surface is scratched from the screwdriver. thus, light is being reflected in a different way, which results in a "change of color" as seen by the human eye.

  • ROTFL 2:45

  • I was about to shout "RMA NEXT TIME :O" but i say that it's 5 years old .. but even i would try to sell on ebay and catch a retarded man who would buy a failed HDD

  • bionerd your the coolist but your a little weird

  • bionerd23, if you ever get a hdd that seems beyond repair:

    - Put it into the freezer

    - Go to the store and buy a hdd encasing with usb connector (more errstable than ATA)

    - Remove the hdd from the freezer and place in the encasing

    - Switch on and connect encased HDD to USB port

    - Run dd_rescue (Debian package: ddrescue) on the disk to copy it without dd stopping at errors

Some may call the HDD in the freezer thing an urban legend, but it seems to have worked for me in practice. Good luck :-)

  • hmm, well, worth a try if nothing works... i guess i was just lucky that mine could still be copied without any real trouble (i only found two programs not running properly afterwards, the rest was absolutely fine).

but yeah, if everything else fails, i will try your tip next time! thanks! =)

  • Notice how the data cable is not plugged in, pretty smart considering possible short circuiting, then again that goes for the 12V plug too, which *must be* connected, and apparently is.

Would it have been fun to see OS I/O data errors occuring on screen during this torture? Maybe, but HDD's with removed encasing are, iirc, immediately unusable in any case, due to a changed bernoulli effect, causing immediate continuous head crash anyway.

  • well, i ran the HDD with just an old PSU anyway, with no computer connected... 'just in case', and also easier to do. thus, a data cable would've been pretty useless anyway. ;-)

i have seen open hdds run sort-of okay (at least for a small amount of time) here on youtube by the way, so maybe that would indeed be interesting. maybe i'll do with again with some old computer (+linux) and an old hdd i have laying around anyway.

  • Ah, I guess nothing trumps experimentation, =)

  • use it as a pottery wheel

  • yup. it was about 5 yrs old, running 24/7.

  • cool video... its nice to see a female destroying a hard drive. i have destroyed many in my day that have almost lost all my data

  • backups ftw. =)

  • you must make the nerds go crazy!

your the first girl i ever seen thats into radioacticity!

  • so you are a girl??? i thought you were a boy!

or are u a boy that looks like a girl?

  • lol, i am a girl - well, woman (i'm 25). i am genetically female, and i have a female body (my tits are by far large enough as not to be confused with bee stings, for example), but i have a rather deep voice and i certainly have the brain of a man (even though i am heterosexual, ie. into men - hangon, if i have a male brain, that actually makes me a gay man inside a woman's body, maybe?).

so, i am genetically a heterosexual female, and brainwise a gay male. ^_^

  • lol...it's preety funny when u describe urself like tt

  • are you a boy or a girl?

  • neither; as i am 25, i'd say i am a woman. :-P

  • wow, cool... intelligent girl ;)

keep it good, I wish I could manage so much wisdom as you do =)

  • That was great! ^_^ After all that scratching it up with the screwdriver though, I don't think even the hammer could fix it. Maybe thermite could make it all better though? lol

  • lol i was thinking the same! not thermite, but fire anyway. not in my room, though. :-P

maybe the heads will get stuck to the platter and rip themselves off...

0.0) da is es einfacher.

  • wait, I dont understand...

where to get that burning laser?

her CD device is working and that is an HDD...

  • lol, turning magnetic storage into optical storage - that sounds fun!

  • fix it with a hammer-very funny

  • That poor HDD.

Don't suppose you left some of your uranium collection near it?

  • yeah, actually, i felt sorry for it after doing this abusive stuff to it... really, i'm not kidding. :-/

guess i have a soft spot after all, oh well.

erm, my pc is exposed to about 0.5-2 uSv/h btw. ;-)

  • Hahaha. That's quite a wide range. Why does it fluctuate so much?

  • it depends if its the back of my pc - which is closer to the source - or the front.

  • Oh, duh.
